Except chosing a 2014 background lets you completely customize it. Idk why anyone wouldn't just choose a 2014 background.
Because you might not own the 2014 rulebooks?(!)
These are the current core rules with no expectation that new players need any other book. Telling people that they should choose 2014 backgrounds is ignoring the issue highlighted in these books.
Well... you don'tneed any other book. Even if your DM is completely against any kind of customization for backgrounds, there are plenty of optimal builds you can make with the printed ones.
I agree that we could use more choices on the page, but getting that is as simple as waiting for them to make more.
Two words: Organized play. Not all people have a home game. DDAL does not allow for any kind of homebrewing. For most people, this doesn’t matter but there is a nominal contingent of players who can’t just make shit up. TrippyHippyEcho may be one of them. Even if they’re not, there are others.
They said one of the reasons they moved away from ability score bonuses in race was because some players felt they had to select certain races depending on what class you wanted to play (like taking Wood Elf if you were playing a monk). And Tasha’s helped fix that.
Now we’re back in the same boat where some players will feel like they will have to select a certain background depending on the class they want to play (like taking Sailor if you were playing a monk).
This. Exactly this. I'm bewildered why they basically moved the frustration to a different aspect of character creation, rather than simply eliminating it.
If you are under the impression that you can buy an RPG like D&D, read the rules and just run them as written... prepare to be disappointed, no one in the history of RPG hobby anywhere on gods green earth has ever come even close to achieving this.
i have played D&D (every version since 2E) and have played them all as written without house rules and have had zero issues whatsoever playing them and had a blast doing it. In fact Every RPG I have ever played has been as written without house rules.

They specifically state in the updated Adventurer's League rules that the "customize a 2014 background" sidebar is legal for use in AL. This is all much ado about nothing.

This is really helpful! Thank you for passing this along!!
