I started playing in the fall of 1979 and DMing in the spring of 1980. In Tallahassee - if any of the other old timers are from that time and place drop me a private msg.
I started in the mid/late 80s when I was in middle school.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
This is a really interesting result, you can almost see the generations of D&D players compared to the generations of the games and it sort of lines up with kind of their perceived popularity.
I fall in the 21 to 30 range (technically, just shy of 30), and feel that 3rd edition was the worst edition. I'd rank them 5th, 2nd, 1st, 4th, 3rd in that order.

One summer I got to play with some cousins from Dallas that had access to the game before I ever heard of it (fair considering I was in 6th grade pre-internet). My parents surprised me at Christmas in 1984 with a boxed set and I was able to read the rules instead of our shared interpretation of remembered rules. I devoured that boxed set! I still play every week!
played my first game on Christmas break January 1980, AD&D.
only addition I didn’t play was basic/red box.
To me 5E plays like a really well house ruled 2nd edition, and that’s a Good thing. I think 3e/3.5e soured on me the fastest, and I really liked 4e, but 5th is definitely my favorite.

Pretty much this.

I've jotted down a few different year counts in response to questions like this. Here's my most concise answer; 1976-1980, 1984-1996, 2005-2007, 2020-present. . . about 22 years, with long breaks at times.
The first game ever played was 1984 and I still have 1 player from that first game in my current gaming group.

About 1995. Fun game, gotta be low inhibition. Like playing Pictionary with folks. I think 5th much better for introduction than 2nd.
