Personally, I favor Ao but only my main character; who is an Alchemist who was hired by Baulderian for his Maztican expedition, worships them because I played a short 2e AD&D featuring the Sundering which shattered his faith. He totally understands Ao does not care about him or anything and is "totally fine" with that. To him it is his truth and that is that. All other characters I build for One Shots and stuff will follow other deities.
What about you all? Who is your main deity and why?
Lord of Shadows Mask master manipulator involved in schemes even archdevils and gods can't completely figure, thought to be almost dead after some of it's divine power was split, stolen, absorbed or sacrificed and then who knows what nefarious deal with Mephistopheles. Only to see rebirth after Drasek Riven, himself ascended to a demigod of shadows, prophesied the return of Mask, to then thwart Shar's Cycle of Night while stripping divinities from both Mephistopheles, Rivalen Tanthul and perhaps other hidden portions who-knows-where.
Mask is back, or never really left, like shadow composed of the presence and absence of light which come and go, often clear often impenetrable...
In the current campaign I am playing in, I based the character off of an awesome Cat we had that died too soon. He was a murdering crazy cat, so I am playing a Tabaxi-Echo Knight Fighter that is a follower of Bhaal.

Breathe, dragons; sing of the First World, forged out of chaos and painted with beauty. Sing of Bahamut, the Platinum, molding the shape of the mountains and rivers; Sing too of Chromatic Tiamat, painting all over the infinite canvas. Partnered, they woke in the darkness; partnered, they labored in acts of creation.
Ilmater, god of martyrdom and perseverance. He does a cool thing where he can possess any good aligned person who's suffering and soothe/heal their pain while destroying the cause of said pain, be it restraint or torture. Pretty cool dude. https://omegle****/
I make up most of the gods for my characters and worlds. Or I use real world mythology.
I had a frog-turned-human divine soul sorcerer who served Oothret, the owl god of knowledge and secrets. He appeared as a giant owl-headed god who carried a trident with candles for spear points.
And I had a tabaxi monk who served the Saint of travelers and wanderers. His monkish order required him to always remain on the road to help anyone who was traveling and to explore and forge new paths. Perfect for an adventuring party.
Ghaunadaur for me (wiki here: https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Ghaunadaur) I rather like the notion of a Elder Evil rising up to be a God worshipped by Outcasts, Oozes and among other things, Aboleth and has favourite colours that its worshippers wear to try and please it. All in all I find it a useful one stop shop of Evilness for DMing.

Oooo, a nice one. Not every day you cross one of their followers.
For the longest time, I liked Lathander. Then I grew up and thought: But he's just totally bland, the good-ish flaver of meh. I'm afraid since then I haven't played a character who really believes in anything. But then, that's not true. I play a goblin thief called Rakash, and he prays to 'the dark and terrible powers of the lightless abyss'. Were you to ask him, he'd explain that the faceless terrors who ultimately rule those who live in the underdark have no names, and accept no worship other than fear. And Rakash has many failings, but being afraid (of most things, but elves in particular) is a core skill.

Blanket disclaimer: I only ever state opinion. But I can sound terribly dogmatic - so if you feel I'm trying to tell you what to think, I'm really not, I swear. I'm telling you what I think, that's all.
I am a big fan of Io/Asgorath the Ninefold Dragon, though honestly I enjoy most of the draconic pantheon even if my interpretation of them is quite different from their previous incarnations throughout the editions.

BG3 made me into a Jergal stan. The guy is so chill!
I wish D&D had an equivalent of Cayden Cailean from Pathfinder, the guy who got absolutely hammered and came out of the Starstone a god of revelry and freedom. Llira and Sharess are close but don't quite get there for me.
Typically Mystra is my go-to. I like Selune as well, when Mystra doesn't make much sense.
For rangers, I typically favor Shaundakul.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
Glad to see Ilmater getting some love! My first ever PC was a Cleric of the Broken God, and he's held a special place in my heart ever since. And a deity of getting up no matter how much life has tried to knock you down is pretty inspiring, especially since one of his main tenants is channeling your pain into making sure no one else goes through similar.
Flying Spaghetti God. My character was obsessed with pasta related foods and meatballs.
Anyone else get this reference? Don't worry if you don't. The Great Flying Spaghetti Monster doesn't penalize nonbelievers too heavily.

Is Ao the new Io? I'm genuinely curious.
Ao has been the "overgod" of the Forgotten Realms deities for 30 years or more. I would not exactly call them new.

Thanks for the information. I haven't been well read on D&D lore or game rules since the early days of 2e. I appreciate your input.

For my elves always Corellon Larethian. For my humans usually Lathander though I've repped Tempus on occasion too.
