I find paladins fairly one dimensional (smite, smite, smite), artificers are more interesting. I haven’t looked closely (yet) at the revised 5.5 artificers but their focus on arcane magic makes them potentially a solid Gish candidate. Rangers are my favorite but their focus on concentration based “primal” magic creates problems as I would like a greater mix of arcane magic and nonconcentration spells. I get that for a half caster with limited spell slots concentration based spells are practical in terms of time and slot management but having access to more single round evocation type spells as well as multi round and extended time non concentration type spells would provide greater overall value.

Are a few left out?
Artificer, Paladin, and Ranger are the only half-casters available in official 5e/5.5e material.
I really like Artificers, though I've never really played a Paladin in tabletop D&D, and only played a Ranger once for a one-shot.
pronouns: he/she/they
I've played a Paladin for an One-Shot and I loved it.BUT I prefer Artificiers
Thematically:
1 - Ranger
2 - Artificer
3 - Paladin
Gameplay:
1 - Paladin
2 - Artificer
3 - Ranger
(of course i still wish there was an arcane/elemental spellsword half caster)
