Is choosing the Milestone option for Advancement Type In the D&D Beyond Character Generator the same as the Experience Checkpoints used in Season 8? I understand the Experience Checkpoints come from XGE.
Similar in theory, but not the same. Milestone leveling means the DM determines when you level up. For example, at least some of the published adventures suggest leveling up averted completing a chapter or section of a chapter.
In the checkpoint system, at least in its AL manifestation, you earn checkpoints based on playtime. Leveling up requires a certain number of checkpoints; the number varies depending on what level you are at.
DDB staff have said that they want to support AL, but won't be able do implement AL rules/support for season eight (not enough time to do so, as rules came out recently and are still in flux). They hope to have them out for season 9, but have not promised they will be. (There are simply too many variables and other priorities for them to do more than hope at this point)
If you are using Beyond for AL S08, then use the milestone system on your character sheet. When you track your Check Points and your AL logsheet and gain a level, just adjust your level on beyond. Your AL Logsheet is like the receipt for your character, you have to keep it around (don't toss it in the recycling), and the level / XP / Checkpoints listed on your sheet is what is important.
Well XP checkpoint does not comes from Xanathar's Guide to Everything, it comes from the Players HandBook.
Both systems are very different from each other both with its pros and cons. I am in all favor for the Milestone system. I hate the very idea that you can create a chicken farm and become a butcher for everyone in all nearby towns while becoming a level 20 hero that way. I think Milestones are better since it allows the DM to have story arcs which can be tailored to the power each character has. You can create hard encounters that are better to avoid, and you can create medium that will be a good fight. With a XP system you might just become a level 5 heros while still dealing with common bandits aimed for a level 2 or level 3 hero party because the story arc moves to slow.
In the link below it specifically states the XP checkpoints come from XGE...but I understand the point that Milestones are different than the reward payout for season 8 regardless of what it's called. Thank you
