Well, I'm the GM so I don't "play them" I NPC them here and there as they interact with the party. No, not DMPCs. Some I have reserved for later use if I wind up playing, but many are either key NPCs in one campaign or another or may be in the future.
Still... i keep trying to find unique character builds/concepts ... therefore it is a sickness

Playtesting Fugare Draconis, an epic tale of adventure, loss, and redemption
I kind of have this too, although a lot less than that. I like making characters, as does my DM. One good thing is that we play on Roll20 and text-based. This makes if a lot easier for us to play more than one character at once. There are 3 campaigns I am in and in two of them I am dual-wielding characters. In one I play a wizard (diviner) and monk (way of open hand), in another I am playing a cleric (death domain) and another monk (way of shadow, also has some Rogue (assassin)*) and thinking of adding a third character. In the third campaign I am playing a cat. The other player characters think I am just a cat, I'm actually a beast-soul (homebrew) sorcerer (dark soul, also homebrew).
I just love coming up with new characters and find the character creation easy. It actually works out well for me as a DM (I am a DM in a 4th game) because playing around with lots of different classes and races and things gives me more understanding of what the players can do with their characters and, hopefully, come up with interesting encounters for them. I'm new and still learning how to do that well but even so I find it helpful.
* Shadow Monk with Shadow Step and is an Assassin Rogue is a serously brutal combo. Sneak attack auto-crit to an unaware enemy from an expert stealthing and the abilty to teleport 60 ft through shadow as a bonus and get advantage on next attack (every turn) with stunning strike?! OMG yes please.
I have one.....and I haven't been able to play him lately due to crazy work scheduling. Here lately I just keep getting the new books as they come out for when I eventually DM a new game, let alone get the chance to play in one.

I use summon instrument to summon my kettle drum, hold it overhead like Donkey Kong, and chuck it at the nearest kobold.
@ leathco, head on over to the looking for players or DM's section. Plenty of posts with people playing online.
I know, but the problem isn't other peoples schedules, it's my own. Right now I never know when I could be called in to work, and I don't have a set schedule, so I really don't wanna interfere with other peoples games by having to suddenly leave at times.

I have around 70 at the moment. About 50 of those are test characters though for new content, making sure that new races/subclasses work etc.
