So I'm making my first character in D&D beyond and the DM says we get starting spells regardless of class (I'm a fighter so I don't start with spells), but I can't figure out how to add them. I know I can make custom spells in the character sheet but I want to add official spells (namely fog cloud and light) and I was wondering if there was any way to do so without adding them in as a custom spell.
Hmm, I might recommend creating a Homebrew Feat that gives you those spells. You can then give yourself the homebrew feats from the "Features & Traits" -> "Feats" -> "Manage Feats" menu on the character sheet.
problem is for casters it doesn't add them as spells that use your spell slots does it?
If a feat adds spells then no, not currently. Although those spells can still consume spell slots, the player just has to manually tick off the spell slot instead is hitting a “cast” button.
Subclasses and Races can add additional spells that are either always prepared or do not count against known spells (depending on if your character either “prepares” their spells or “learns” them), and then they can be designated to “consume spell slots.”

No, but that wasn't needed in this post.
Sposta already covered how easy that is to work around (as easy as clicking 1 button instead of a different button...).
don't wanna start a row but it's not that simple though is it, Sposta points out using a feat doesn't count it against your known/prepared spell count, also the one button you suggest would be on a different page to the spell description, it also relies on the player fully understanding everything, they just have to forget to tick off a spell slot or not realise they need to and wammo they're getting free castings, either that or the DM has to constantly keep track. I'm not disagreeing that manually ticking off spell slots is possible and for now seems the only workaround (although i have found an alternative, see next para) i'm just saying it's not a great solution as it makes it much less intuitive also seems an easy thing for dnd byond to fix as you can already do it with homebrew subclasses.
Ok rant over, as to my solution, I just create a homebrew version of the spell i want to give my caster that they wouldn't normally have access to but where i don't change anything but what classes can access it.

Correct. That is also what is intended and required by by the topic of this thread. If that is not what you are wanting make it clear that you are changing the topic of the thread you are hijacking, find a thread that is actually about what you want, or make a new thread.

It is on the spell's page and still only 1 click. If players don't know how to use the character sheet, there is going to be problems any way. And did I already mention that the original post is not asking to use spell slots? So it was still the correct answer when it was posted, and remains so.

Well I am glad that you found the correct answer to a question that was never asked.

How does that work?
I have a similar problem and I can't find the button to add unknown spells to the characters spell sheet.
I want to give a Paladin lvl4 the Shadow Blade Spell but it should not consume a spell slot.

To expand on what DxJxC wrote, you can check out the Homebrewed Subclasses and Species FAQ #14: (https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/homebrew-house-rules/131411-a-homebrewers-how-to-faq). You hat answer was written for Subclasses & Species, but it’s similar enough to how Feats get programmed that you should be able to figure it out. Just make sure you designate the Number of Uses and the Spellcasting Ability when you attach the spell to the Feat. If you need more help, don’t hesitate to ask.

Ah! Ok, thanks!
So you mean I could make a homebrew subclass or race and there I can declare what spells are available.
How would you manage to do it? Make a feat or make a subclass/race. The character is already lvl 4. I ask, because you probably have more experience with the dnd beyond system.

Whether I made it as a feat, race/species, or subclass depends on what exactly I want to accomplish. If you want to add a spell that can only be cast with a spell slot, a spell with a limited number of castings, or both; and how your character gained this special spellcasting ability is what will determine what kind of homebrew you want to make. The character’s level doesn’t matter because you can always swap out the race/species or subclass for your homebrew if you want to, and you can add a feat directly to your character sheet at any level if you need to. If you give me more details about the hat precisely you want to accomplish, I can give you more details on how best to accomplish it.

I have created a feat called "(DM only) Extra Spells" specifically for such an occasion.

You could also potentially create a magic item that has the spells and consumes charges instead of spell slots?
