So as a relatively new player, (sorry to repeat this: played in 80's as a kid and then a 30 year hiatus until this past March,) I want to buy all the books but am worried that the minute I buy them all, a new edition will be announced. Since the Players Handbook and DM's guide is in the $30 range right now, it seems a no brainer but does anyone know if there is a new edition like a 5.5 coming out? Otherwise I will buy PH, DM Guide, MM and Volo's before December...thanks for advice.

There hasn't been anything announced, and this edition is fairly new so I'd say you are safe to purchase. Just my opinion though.
The shortest time between editions was six years, and that was with 4e which was widely considered the least popular edition. 5e is turning out to be the most popular edition, ever, in terms of not only sales but of widespread adoption and acceptance into mainstream culture. So even under the very worst case scenario, you're still looking at another three years before a new edition, and given the popularity of 5e, a new edition that soon is highly unlikely.

Wizards have been fairly committed to the playtest model, so even if they do decide to start work on a new version, you're likely to get 2-3 years heads up before it's released.

You've got nothing to worry about, seriously.
