I won't bother with a boring intro, so I'll just make it short and list off my questions.
1. What exactly is D&D Beyond? I can't easily find basic information about it beyond some extremely vague video trailers, and the FAQ was not too helpful either.
2. What, if anything, does D&D Beyond offer over something like roll20? Does it contain everything I could possibly need to run/play a game, or is it more like a supplement to a virtual tabletop like roll20, or what?
3a. Why should I pay for content? I get the impression that I could just use homebrew content and make/find "homebrew" equivalents of official content at no extra cost, so is there a compelling reason to pay for official content or is it a case of D&DB staff policing the homebrew content offerings to make sure people aren't just bypassing the price tag by ripping off official content?
3b. A more secondary (but still prevalent) concern is what refund policies there are, if any, and whether or not the content I buy is usable elsewhere on other platforms or something (which I'm assuming it's not).
I would appreciate it if somebody could fill me in on this stuff since I tried finding answers myself but didn't really succeed.
1. A digital toolset to provide cross-linked source data with incorporated character builder, campaign management, and homebrew crafting. This will be a meaningful way to eliminate the pencils, paper, and physical books from a D&D tabletop session.
2. As above, it will contain everything needed to run/play a game. This is not a virtual tabletop venture, but a digital replacement for the goods needed when sitting with a group of players.
3a. You pay for what you find value in. If you would prefer to code all the private homebrew required to adequately replace the need for a source book, you are free to do so. Anything you homebrew as "Private" goes unmoderated; Anything you attempt to publish will be limited by copyright and homebrew rules. Be forewarned, replicating a source book in private homebrew will be quite the timely venture. As stated, you are the expert in what you find value in.
3b. I cannot attest to refund policies. The content you buy is usable on desktop or mobile, soon to incorporate a dedicated, offline mobile app. Being that this isn't a virtual tabletop, but a digital toolset, it doesn't "integrate" into other platforms, but provide information. However, there has been talk and speculation about the staff here conversing with Roll20, etc regarding cooperative measures.
Please do not hesitate to ask if you need further clarification or have additional questions! :D

Alright, thanks, that's pretty helpful actually. I probably won't really be using D&DB much then, but if there's a meaningful cooperation in the future with a virtual tabletop service like roll20 then I might be potentially much more excited & interested, so I'll try to keep track of that periodically.

The devs have expressed interest in an integration, so keep an eye out ;)
