It depends on if you want to be a DM first or a Player first. If you want to be a player, I suggest you save reading it for when you're ready to DM, and just let whoever's running the adventure know that this is your first time playing 5e. Also ask if they're having a session 0; that's always recommended even for veteran players/DMs, and even more so for newcomers (which technically you're coming from older editions, but I think it still applies in this case).
Basically, yes. It’s an opportunity for DM and players to discuss expectations for the campaign: funny vs serious, mystery vs action/adventure, plot armor vs deadly, etc. This way people don’t get butthurt when a character dies because everyone agreed on “deadly,” stuff like that.
Remember back in the day when the whole 1st session was the DM pitching the campaign and everybody rolling up characters. Now, instead of calling that “session 1,” they call that “session 0.”

Always better to play than to read. You can always read it after to compare.

I definitely want to play first before I DM.
What's a Session 0? Like an orientation?
