Would I ever charge as a DM? No, I'm too busy to put the time in to make my DMing what I would consider a product.
Would I ever pay for a DM? Sure, if the DM was good, came prepared and ran a good campaign, I'd happily pay to be part of that.
Is paying for a DM or charging as a DM a moral wrong? No. You think paying for a DM is stupid? Sure, don't pay for one then.
You think me paying for a DM makes me stupid. Well, I really don't care what you think, I'll spend my dollars where I want to.
D&D is a game, we pay for books, dice and miniatures. I pay Roll20 and dndbeyond for services. We pay (indirectly) authors and artists to create content. I pay creators directly on Patreon for adventures, maps, tokes and other content. It's silly talk about DMing as if it's some kind of position in a weird cult that shouldn't be sullied with dollars.
And the conversation about players being just a important to the game as the DM? I've never had a campaign fall apart because a player left; every campaign ended because the DM stopped wanting to DM (including the ones where I was the DM).
