I'm thinking of trying DnD out for the first time, but after looking up and reading multiple guides and handbooks I can't seem to figure out how to create a character. I come from an more rigid RPG experience (FF, WoW, etc.) so my knowledge is based on that. Plus, I really love the Isekai and Fantasy light novel/manga stories so keep that in mind when you read...
I haven't found any spells that match what I want for the character I'm trying make exactly (though I found a couple that get close). The only thing is I have to have a multimedia to get it work...
I'm trying make a Magic Swordsman. He enhances his own abilities with magic and even enchants his blade with the elements as needed. I had other ideas as well but I wasn't able to find the spells that would work and I`m satisfied with the build so far.
I was going to take Fighter as the main and then take about 3-4 levels into a Cleric so I can get Enhance Ability and Elemental Weapon... Since those are the closest spells to what I want to accomplish.
My dilemma is I don't know how the two classes mix together and whether I can have them together from the start at the levels I need them to be... Enhanced = level 2 Cleric and Elemental = level 3 Cleric (Forge?)
I don't want my character to OP just normal for a multiclass... Any suggestions and/or advice?
I think I got the main points about the character but hit me up if you need more details since I have a history pretty much all planned out.
Don't know off the top of my head if it will match all the criteria but, if you're looking for magic swordsman, maybe consider Fighter with the Eldritch Knight subclass? It would save on the multiclass creating less of a challenge on that front.
Alternatively just go Paladin - smites are technically divine magic that power your attacks. Plus you can cast smiting spells (e.g. Wrathful Smite) to further power up weapon attacks with a debilitating effect added for good measure.

honestly I think the class you’re looking for is a hexblade warlock, pact of the blade. Multi class some paladin eventually if you want since they both rely on charisma for spell casting. But you’ll want thirsting blade before you multiclass. You could do fighter instead of paladin but it would probably serve you best in this particular instance to just stay full warlock.
For your first game I wouldn't go multi-class it makes things much more complicted and it would be easy to end up with a character that is ineffective. For a magic swordsman I would think of the following possibilities:
Forge Cleric: Clerics are full casters but many of the xub-classes are built for melee combat. While cleric spells don't apply magic to your weapon the forge domain cleric gets access to searing smite and elemental weapon which do. On top of that you have a feature right from level 1 that enables you to imbue magic into your sword
Paladin (any subclass): While D&D doesn't force it these guys are quintiessially knights brings their sword down of evil ders with power from the Gods to smite them. Their signature feature is devine smite where they use a spell slot to cause much more damage on a hit with their sword. They also have access to a load of spells that enhance their weapon damage as well as elemental weapon and searing smite they get a bunch of others (anything with smite in the name) though they do get elemental weapon and searing smite later than a forge cleric). While you wouldn't want to have them all prepared at once paladins (like clerics) can change there spells every day so you can dodifferent magical this with your sword.
Pact of the Blade Warlock (Hexblade): You make a pact with a powerful being and are able to make your sword appear out of thin air and cast many of the paladin spells that enhance your weapon damage you can also curse your enemies so you are able to damage them more when you hit them, and have access to a load of other spells that magically henhance your sword attacks (for example green flame blade, booming blade, shadow blade and rnsnaring strike). Be ware that you can't change your spells every day as a warlock like you can with a cleric or paladin.
Battle Smith Artificer: Artificers work at their magic rather than getting it from the Gods, I think the only spell that directly affects their sword attacks is elemental weapon which they wont get to level 9 but they have te abilty to imbue magic into items so they can make their sword magical. Battle Smiths are proficiant with all swords (other Artificers can not effectively use the more powerful weapons) they also get a steel "pet" that acts as a tank (not sure if that is in your character concept) and when you get to level 9 when you or your pet hit you can choose to deal extra damage your heal yourself or one of your party.
Other classes /sub classes like college of swords bard, eldritch knoght fighter and arcane trickater rogue are able to use a sword andperform magic but I don't think they are what yu are looking for.
Those are all great suggestions, but what if I'm looking for a light weight fighter that uses two handed short swords, bow and arrows and wears leather armor.
He used to be the Captain of the Guard and trained many soldiers and heroes before deciding to go out and adventure on his own. He uses magic to enhance his abilities (raising Dex, Str, Con, etc.) and can uses his elemental weapon magic to add an element to his attacks that the monster is weak to... He even knows a minor cure or more to help heal himself when needed.
He`s been adventuring and exploring long enough to know how to survive by himself and has grown a bit of acclaim for tackling difficult ruins and dungeons by himself. Though he'll be the first one to tell you there were some close calls there.
He's recently been looking for a group or party to join him on his adventure since he plans to go to some of the more challenging locations...
----------------
I wanted him to have the ability to enhance his armor with resistance to elements or something like that as well, but I haven't found a spell that would do it.
Smiting and the such sounds cool and everything, but I'm really looking for a character build that matches this background... Fighter gives me the weapons and armor build I'm looking for while Enhance Abilities and Elemental Weapon are the two spells that match what I'm looking for there. The multiclass with Cleric gives me that magic portion I need to cast those spells as well as the added bonus of cure spells...
cleric is the closest you’ll get. Start with 1 level of fighter to get the armor and weapon abilities then the rest cleric or whatever you want I suppose but that is how I would do it. You’ll probably need the war caster feat to be able to cast spells while holding two swords at once, unless you’re keeping the, sheathed a lot I suppose. You might be able to go full cleric and get the results you’re poking for by taking feats. I don’t think you’re going to get EXACTLY what you’re looking for. Talk to your DM and maybe they’ll bypass some of the rules to accommodate you but I doubt they will and I personally just wouldn’t do that.
id go with hexblade warlock, I wanna play one now, sounds fun just thinking about it lol
Sounds like you want some combination of Fighter and Cleric. War Domain for the Cleric would give you a number of useful combat buffs, and pretty much any Fighter (except Eldritch Knight) can be built around that. Fighter 11/Cleric 9 seems to be a good consensus on level distribution between classes, though there might be some deviation based on which Archetype and Divine Domain, respectively, you end up picking.
Alternatively, you can stick with just going a pure Eldritch Knight, but that doesn't get any spellcasting until level 3 when you specialize. It will delay the more magical aspects of your swordsman, but as you progress to higher levels it would be very much in-line with what you're thinking.
I'd also like to echo the idea of a Pact of the Blade Hexblade Warlock. It's not what you are looking for thematically, but it is absolutely what you are looking for mechanically.
I find it interesting that no one has mentioned the Bladesinging tradition (a Wizard subclass) it’s elf and half elf only unless the DM Opens it up, but an elf blade singer would get you bow and short sword proficiency, light armor (at 2nd level), access spells, etc.
Spellcasting and two weapon fighting is difficult. Most spells require a material and/or somantic componant with a spell focus being able to take the place of the material component in most cases. Clerics can use their shield as a spell focus but not their sword.
To use a sword as a spell focus I think you have to go college of swords bard or artificer (have I missed something?). There is still an issue if you want to cast a spell with a somantic component and not a material component you would need to sheath one of your swords but you can you can do this as an interact with object (and if necessary draw it again on your next turn as your interact with object) you get rid of the whole difficulty of this by getting the war caster feat which would be very good for you anyway.
I've mentioned artificer, a bard gets enhance abilty along woth some other spells that will help you combat indirectly for example hold person makes you enemy extremely vulnerable to your parties attacks and the swords bards blade flourish might fit your character concept.

Hexblade is a pretty good class for a swordsmen who uses magic to buff his attack, it even has some cantrips like green blade flame to buff attacks.
