Unlocked content: In chronological order, PHB, sub-classes and backgrounds of SCAG, spells of SCAG, The Tortle Package, monsters from MM, monsters from CoS, monsters from HotDQ, pre-order of XGtE, races from VGtM, DMG, missing parts of SCAG, missing parts of MM and finally Legendary Bundle.
Subscription: Master Tier
Reasons: Started with PHB and the needed parts of my players (also one month of master tier). Awesome experience with the tool+content (got one year of subscription). Got monsters from some sources to use with a chrome extension while DMing. Charity considering The Tortle Package. Then wife gave me some books on birthday. Pre-order of Xanathar's to get it faster than physical (I live in Brazil). Finally Legendary bundle on Cyber Monday to have access to adventures, all monsters and missing compendiums.
Potential Next Purchases: well potentially everything that comes out XD.
Unlocked content: Core 3 when DDB launched (to make the most of the initial offer), then all other players-option oriented supplements (Volo's, SCAG, did pre-orderer XGtE, Tittle pack), recently bought LMoP and took advantage of the Critical Role discount to buy CoS.
Subscription: Master Tier
Reasons: I love D&D 5ed, and the group I currently DM for is mostly from UK, while I live in Spain. Most of last year we played on Roll20, but after a while I started feeling I preferred the Theatre of the Mind rather than all the tokens and stuff sailable there. They are nice options, but I think the shift the focus from the story to the aesthetics you have in the website, for me as well (mea culpa, no questions asked). DDB has the perfect starting tools to allow for Theatre of the Mind online play, with all the integration and possibilities for ease of use, but full focus on the stories to be told rather than additional visuals. I am now writing here the next leg of the campaign, after the party finished LMoP. I bought the digital version of that adventure because they'd still have a couple of side quests they did not complete, and they might want to, and wanted to have the info I need for that all in one place.
CoS I bought because of the discount and because one day or another I will run it, I want to run it one day, be it with this online group or 'round the table group.
This is the other reason I bought, and will keep on buying stuff here: it makes my work as a DM (and one with little free time at that) much easier, much more cohesive and organic, with all the tooltipping the website allows when writing down in the campaign section. I am looking forward to the coming expansion to the tools like there's no tomorrow and I want to keep helping the site grow even by just throwing money at them.
Potential Next Purchases: I am now in a place where I am tempted to finish it off and buy the Legendary Bundle, since now I already have 2/3 of all that's out right now, and it's not an incredible amount remaining on it to finish off the buy. I am looking forward to see what the next supplement from WotC will be, and if pre-order will be available here I will definitely get it. I will probably also end up buying physical versions as well, but that's more for a tactile, idle visuals (books on the shelf) and collectionist point of view rather than need.
DM or Player: Mostly DM, hoping to be a player more often.
Unlocked content: PHB, DMG, MM, XGtE
Subscription: None. I plan to get annual Master Tier after I get a stable income.
Reasons: I've been playing D&D for just about a year. I was introduced to by my friends, and I quickly became obsessed with it. After a few months of playing, I come across D&D Beyond. I quickly found it to be amazing. The character builder and the various listings of spells, monsters, and equipment are incredibly useful. After doing some research on what exactly DDB is and what their plans are, I decided to purchase the PHB and MM (On a side note: I find it interesting that many people, such as some of the people above, seem to just blindly spend their money on DDB before actually conducting at least the most basic research about DDB, and then proceed to complain about it not being what they want it to be). Anyhow, as someone who hasn't purchased any of the physical books, D&D Beyond has been a complete steal for me. I look forward to future updates and content on D&D Beyond.
I am a player for most part. Have DMed a game or two and the group said it was fun. I just went ahead and got legendary bundle. Why? I have no physical books for 5th ed. I really like how fast I can look stuff up with DDB. Also the discount was a big part of the reason to pick it up
Also got a year of master tier cause being able to share is pretty cool. Wife did not want to pay a month at a time.
Things I will buy. Pretty much everything I can as it comes out. Been into collecting dnd books for years and love not having to carry them all around lol. Really wAnting to get into a pbp game.
Reasons: I moved over seas last year and didn't have space to pack a library of books. I wanted legitimate digital copies of the products and thought DDB was the optimal choice (so far, really happy with the investment). I haven't purchased any subscriptions mostly because I'm not making many characters to need heroic nor am I running games that would need me to use the master tier.
Potential Next Purchases: I'll likely get MToF when it comes out. As of now, I have no plans to buy an adventure. I run games on Roll20, so I'd rather buy the modules there where we get the maps, tokens, etc. integrated into the digital tabletop.
Unlocked content: DMG, PHB, MM, SCAG, and SKT I have in hard copy. I bought the legendary bundle on here.
Subscription: Master (Annually)
Reasons: I got back into RP games a few years back thanks to a chance acquaintance to the best storyteller I have ever met. I played in a fate game and a couple world of darkness games and fell in love with gaming. I started playing in a 5E game and really loved the system and decided I wanted to DM my own 5E game. Playing in a couple current games, I am waiting until one ends, (which is in about a month,) before I start my game. My wife got my the 3 core books and the campaign book for Christmas, and I got the SCAG as a birthday gift. When I discovered this website, I thought it would be a great medium for characters, as well as it simplifies the character creation and math, (very useful since I will have a couple D&D virgins in the group.) Once I had the money set aside, I got the legendary bundle on here to allow more variety in my game without having to worry about unlocking items or books between sessions. I will add though, the mobile app is awesome for being both simple to have everywhere and for being so much simpler to find things in than the books.
Potential Next Purchases: Honestly, as far as 5e materials I seem to be set. I do need to pick up a wet erase grid map and replace my printer. Maybe some miniatures.
Unlocked content: Legendary Bundle, at first all non-adventure books.
Subscription: Master Tier
Reasons: I wanted to have a easily searchable database for spells and monsters, and when I tried the beta, I was sold. The character builder is icing on the cake, but running from DDB instead of my physical books and hand-written notes is so much easier. It also made good cost effectiveness, as I only had to buy the content once, the subscribe to share full copies of the content. That was when I actually took the plunge. The value of the subscription is excellent when compared with the price of print copies for each player. And yes, I have multiple copies of the print books that I purchased over time, particularly PHBs.
Potential Next Purchases: Every book coming out at a 15% discount :D
Reasons: I started everyone's characters for a pick up game on DNDB, so after they have taken their PCs and since we've moved into ToA. Bought the MM, Master tier to share and get the fun extras to make running sessions easier with one offs and multiple groups. I got the Tortle Package because its for charity and I also I like the race and the short adventure location, all goes good for me!
Potential Purchases: Races, subclasses. More character optimizations than books most likely. With a discount deals or extra gift money times, maybe I could pick up an adventure book.
Unlocked content: Legendary bundle, pre-order for Waterdeep adventures
Subscription: None
Reasons: I am both a player and DM, depending on whether we are playing at my house or with the other playgroup I am involved in. I run the pre-made 5E campaigns when I DM, and the group I play in runs custom adventures, so thankfully I don't have spoilers for games I play. I prefer keeping up with book releases so I have a searchable database for everything and have immediate reference info for anything a player may bring up. However, I don't need a subscription because I don't really play these games online, don't have a need to share my content (I own physical copies of the books as well, and a player can use one if needed), and the 5 or 6 character sheet limit is plenty for me (the other players all just use paper sheets still, maybe they will move to DnD Beyond after the sheet revamp).
Potential Next Purchases: Mostly just keeping up with all the 5E books as they come out. It's nice having the permanent 15 percent discount, plus plenty of other codes floating around as well, means I got a great deal on my preorder for the Waterdeep books. I'm hoping the annual discount codes continue, as it makes it very easy to afford both physical and digital versions of the books.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
I use summon instrument to summon my kettle drum, hold it overhead like Donkey Kong, and chuck it at the nearest kobold.
Unlocked content: Legendary bundle, pre-order for Waterdeep adventures (was pretty cheap with the discount and a coupon code)
Subscription: Master tier (annual)
Reasons: 2 main reasons:
I don't think DMs should bear the full cost of content when the players are (mostly) the primary beneficiaries of the game itself (same reason my co-players and I have bought our DM content on fantasy grounds)
I believe in supporting new digital initiatives to make RPGs more accessible and don't want the hassle of carting around a suitcase full of books to every game session. D&D beyond is a good tool/site/service, whatever you call it. I am hoping it can be great, maybe even amazing, but for what it is now it is worth it for me. If they add full campaign management tools, private or campaign based forums, selective content sharing (so I can reveal stuff progressively as we adventure) etc, they I will be very happy. I waited since 3rd edition for WOTC to put out good digital tools (the 2nd edition software was great), but they never quite got it right, so I am glad they let 3rd parties step in and do it properly.
Potential Next Purchases: Hopefully some 3rd party content, like Tome of Beasts *hint, hint*
Unlocked content: PHB, DMG, MM, LMoP, ToA, Storm King's Thunder, Tome of Foes, Waterdeep: Dragon Heist, Yawning Portal, Sword Coast
Subscription: Master
Reasons: Began with physical books. Honestly, the quality of the book wasn't what was expected. Ink smeared, pages were waved, etc. Amazon replaced them and Wizards said its the way Amazon was storing them. Bought the Core books here using coupon codes and the master subscription to make it easier for my players to create and manage characters. I knew certain players would want to take certain paths with their characters so I needed a easy way to allow them to do so. (They are all new and unlikely to buy their own stuff)
This site makes character creation and maintenance so easy and fun that I wish I just went digital in the first place. I DID, However run my first adventure using the physical book instead on the site. I let my one player use my laptop for her character.
Unlocked Content: Player's Handbook and Xanathar's Guide to Everything. I have also obtained as individual purchases: all races and subraces from Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes; all subclasses from Dungeon Master's Guide; 6/11 subclasses, all races, all subraces and all backgrounds from the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide; Tortle race from the Tortle Package; all races and subraces from Volo's Guide to Monsters.
Subscription: Hero Tier
Reasons: I enjoy making characters and I'm not a DM and have no interest in actually becoming one. As such, I had no need for adventure guide content, monsters and what have you. I have a copy of DMG and MM and do not use these enough to warrant paying for digital compendiums. The only content I wanted from DMG for making characters would be the subclasses and magic items so I got the subclasses and as for magic items - all the ones I ever want to actually take are included in the Basic Rules. In the one rare event I may want an item in DMG not in basic rules I can just homebrew it. Outside of this I have focused my purchases on things I want to use in the builder like races, subclasses, etc. There's a 5 subclasses missed because of lack of funds for it and I already know these subclasses and have no current interest in using them for my characters. Hero Tier I got because I just love making characters even if I will never play them and desperately needed the unlimited character slots.
Potential Next Purchase: The missed subclasses because I'm a perfectionist. Maybe the items from the various sources, just for ease or homebrew inspiration. Eventually, someday, it will be Legendary Bundle but the next "full" book would probably be MToF just for all that race lore and stuff it offers. May spark homebrew ideas.
DM or Player: Mostly a player but considering attempting to DM...
Unlocked Content: PHB, XGtE, Backgrounds from SCAG.
Subscription: Hero, but wondering if I should have gone Master
Reasons: when I played 4th ed fro a while I used the dnd insider, and I used hero lab extensively for a couple of other games and I find I prefer digital toolkits such as this.
Potential Next Purchase: I don’t know and am hoping for some advice: I am currently playing in AL at my FLGS; my current character is an inquisitive rogue with the faction agent background, and whether it’s because my rogue dies or we eventually get to the next season, I’m planning a hexblade warlock; if anyone cares to advise me, what else should I unlock?
Unlocked Content: Everything (as of LLoK release) - bought Legendary bundle (as of WDH) and pre-ordered WDoMM & GGtR at first, then ordered LLoK when that was announced. I picked up everything except LLoK with a 25% off coupon (which stacks with the 15% from Legendary for ~36%off)
Subscription: Master Tier (Annual)
Reasons: I often run sessions after I'm done with class (in college), and hauling around my core 3, supplemental 4, and a campaign book or two, just got too heavy and bulky (even just a small portion of that). I also like being able to spin up a PC in minutes, rather than it taking half an hour to an hour. I have the subscription to share it all with my players (and to play around with an unlimited number of character ideas).
Potential Next Purchase: Any new content that comes out (although I will probably wait for a 25% off coupon)
In general, I am blunt and to the point. I apologize in advance if I appear mean or rude.
I am an engineer. If there is a problem for which there is no current solution, I may suggest a workaround that accomplishes most of it. It is not that I don't understand the issue, rather, that I am trying to get you closer to what you want.
I have been DMing since shortly after the release of 5E and occasionally have the opportunity to be a player. I also happen to be a L1 Magic Judge.
Subscription: D&D Beyond Master Monthly [trying it out but will most likely go annually]
Reasons: Finding that the digital versions are way more cheaper - more that 50% locally - Although I do have the physical PHB - I would get the physical versions because they are like collector items one day when I am richer, lol. Yet I really love the searching ability and the links in the digital text. Oh and a BIG one::: the digital version is much lighter.
Potential Next Purchases: Will be getting Volo and XGtE next, and then whatever our next adventure is (Mad Mage?) Although I might rather get a tablet for better reading.

Let's Play Dungeon and Dragons (Charisma Check +2) DC 22
Just started using DDB (long time D&D player/DM) and I noticed I can't select Drow as a subclass. I'm getting my group to convert to DDB to use the player character functions, but, need the Drow subclass.
What do i need to purchase to get this? Is it the PHB?
And, if i run campaigns on tabletop, and use this to manage the character sheets, does everyone with an account need to get the PHB (or whatever resource unlocks the Drow subclass) need to get these to use the character builders with the Drow?

For drow, yes, you need to buy either the entire PHB here or just the drow from the PHB. If you or someone else in your group has a master tier sub, any purchased resources can be shared with the campaign members. If not, folks need to purchase or home brew anything that isn’t free here. You may find the buyers guide linked in my signature helpful.
DM or Player: Mostly Player, thinking of running a game/campaign
Unlocked content: Everything via the Legendary Bundle, followed up by the newer purchases as released here on DDB.
Subscription: Master Tier - I wanted to be able to share my stuff with all of my friends easily. I paid for a full year then I cancel as I do not want auto recurring payments as I don't know how money will be in the future.
Reasons: I love making characters and having the app on my Phone, Android tablet, and Chromebook means having 3 copies of every book at my finger tips.
Potential Next Purchases: I already grabbed Tashas so whatever comes after.

DM or Player: DM
Unlocked content: PHB, DMG, MM, LMoP
Hi There,
Just started using DDB (long time D&D player/DM) and I noticed I can't select Drow as a subclass.

Me
DM or Player: Mostly Player, thinking of running a game/campaign
Unlocked content: Everything via the Legendary Bundle, followed up by the newer purchases as released here on DDB.
Subscription: Master Tier - I wanted to be able to share my stuff with all of my friends easily. I paid for a full year then I cancel as I do not want auto recurring payments as I don't know how money will be in the future.
Reasons: I love making characters and having the app on my Phone, Android tablet, and Chromebook means having 3 copies of every book at my finger tips.
Potential Next Purchases: I already grabbed Tashas so whatever comes after.
