We (dad-53, mom-40 something, son 21, daughter 19, son 15, son 13) are spending more time together due to the pandemic and after playing a ton of Settler's of Catan, Munchkin, Risk, Life, etc. my youngest suggested we play DND. I hadn't played since I was a teenager but it sounded great. I had purchased Lost Mine of Phandelver a few years ago but we never had time to play. Instead of running that one, I googled and found this website and the Frozen Sick adventure. We ran that campaign. I watched a youtube video or two (I really liked the What Would the Smart Party Do) to help me learn how to DM (I was only a player back in the day). It was great fun!
We just finished and I see other campaigns here available for sale. What would be a good next adventure? I will likely run Phandelver next just because I have it.
But where do I take the characters (now L3) after Phandelver. Or do I skip Phandelver and run something else?
I'd say run lost mines. It's actually a fun adventure and highly recommended. It was the first adventure I ran and playing monthly it lasted quite a bit.
You can find your own way to connect it to this game or having it as a completely new start.
You can get a book like Dragon of Icespire Peak. That’s to level 6, and if you purchase the subsequent adventures (which are D&D Beyond only), that takes you to like level 13. Also, here is my personal suggestion. Use D&D Beyond to buy your books. It is just so much better compared to having to lug around the physical books. Everything is hyperlinked, you can use the app and have access to everything at all times, and you can use the amazing character creator. D&D Beyond is just such an amazing investment. Even better if you’re new and you discover it before you buy any physical books. I would suggest at least getting the Player’s Handbook on both hard copy and Beyond though. It’s always nice to have a physical copy of it. However, to your question.
If you want to continue the story, you can get a pre-written module. Like I said, the Dragon of Icespire Peak series is good, and take you all the way to level 13ish. If you want to continue in the same world as Frozen Sick, I would get the Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount. Which Frozen Sick is a starting adventure in that book. It’s an amazing book, and it contains everything you need to continue your adventure in that world. Well, that continent of the world. Anyway, it’s a cool world, and a great book, but it doesn’t have any pre-written adventures for anything past level three. The other starting adventures are the same levels as Frozen Sick, just a different part of the continent. So you’d have to homebrew an adventure, or you can convert a pre-written module to that world. It takes some doing, but if you care about consistency and keeping in the same world, then that’s your best shot. Seeing as we don’t have any full-blown modules for Exandria yet.
I did the exact same thing. I followed Frozen Sick up with the Encounter of the Week: Snowed In, but I expanded it beyond the encounter to be a three-session adventure. I can send you my game notes if you want them. I’m pretty proud of my conversion.
the party is now level 4 and I am going to run Forge of Fury from Yawning Portal. Then at level 5 (or maybe 6) I will transition into Storm Kong’s Thunder.

You might want to make the first few encounters more difficult though.
