Hello everybody, I am making a new character and I want him to be a 'Crusader' type of character, any thoughts on how I could make it. What Class/Subclass or even what race.

REMEMBER: Wizards Of The Coast does not own DDB, they are two different companies. When you buy a physical book, WotC receives the money you bought it for, not DDB and vice versa. If you want a digital key to get an online book for free because you have the hardcopy book then DDB makes no money because you don't buy off DDB you buy off WotC, so please stop making threads about this issue. DDB needs money to continue helping people and servers aren't cheap.
If you want a Crusader like character in a literal sense, I would think Paladin, Cleric or Fighter. Honestly though, you could create a melee Ranger, call him a Soldier with strong faith in a religion(or cause). It seems like an extremely flexible base concept.
I was definitely leaning towards a Paladin, what Oath should I choose?

You know what's crazy? Almost all the Oaths fit representations of historical "Crusaders", good or bad. If you are only looking at good guys(subjective..lol), I would think Devotion, Redemption, Ancients and Crown are pretty solid choices. The all have decent, honorable Tenets but, some abilities they possess may match your play-style concept better.

For something like a Templar, vengeance or conquest seems about right. For a Hospitaller, perhaps protection or redemption.
For equipment, your typical Templar carried a sword (longsword or shortsword depending on time period), turkish mace, shield and lance. I want to say they were provided with a dagger as well, but I can't recall and now I'm having trouble finding decent links on google.
For your typical secular crusader, you're probably looking at a cavalier or conquest paladin with standard knightly gear: chain mail and shield, lance, sword and dagger. They'd probably carry a mace or warhammer as a backup or for dealing with enemies who are also in mail.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.

This sounds about right if you are an Inquisition Paladin, lol.
I'm not sure what you're trying to say there. The crusaders were not very nice people.

Subjective. Blanket stereotypes about cultures of the past and our current social idealist mentality, is a terrible mismatch. There was a lot more going on during the times of the Crusades than most expect.
If you want an interesting read that doesn't lean too heavily on a one-sided source, the link below is from History.com.
In some ways, absolutely. Showing how backwards Europe was during the Middle Ages was the worst of it. The article also covers how some Crusaders actually integrated into the society and made alliances there. If you look up a timeline of Jerusalem, you can come to a couple possible conclusions. The first being, people taking over Jerusalem(or attempting to) were not very nice people. You could always instead gather, Jerusalem was a strategic and important place to have possession of, even beyond the religious significance it had for some would be conquerors.
If you want to take a deep dive... I have been following https://www.crusaderkingdoms.com/ for a long time now, because I was building an alternate world campaign where there were 13 crusades, ending just about the time of the Black Plague... and throwing in Vampires for many of the named figures of the time (and heavily building off of "known" vampires from World of Darkness lore). One of the player characters was the granddaughter of Marco Polo. ... Anywho... I still get email periodically and it is fascinating to read. As it is from a scholar, it is sometimes a bit dry, but there is so much detail. So much detail.. and she also doesn't look at it from a single viewpoint, but collects writings from both sides where it is available. Be warned, it is extensive... that's why I like the emails... meal sized chunks of lore interspersed through time.

I read Popular Misconceptions about the Crusades: A Rebuttal. Other than some bias perceived on my part, I felt it was a pretty solid counterpoint to standard views on the Crusades. Thanks for posting the link!

Ok, Thanks for the advice

I think that article made it seem even worse lol.

Dwarf, and take forge domain Cleric.

I think Conquest Paladin would fit the best for the crusaders. Fits the more amoral part of the crusades.
Please check out my homebrew, I would appreciate feedback:
Spells, Monsters, Subclasses, Races, Arcknight Class, Occultist Class, World, Enigmatic Esoterica forms
Fighter battlemaster with defence fighting style and a flail also fits quite well
