(if it's belongs in lore or gameplay, feel free to move it to where it belongs)
I have this idea for a wizard's familiar who gets true polymorphed into a tabaxi, who then becomes a wizard to find their kidnapped owner. Is this possible? (It would be my PC,so obviously the Dm would have to decide the answer, but I want to know if it's possible without DM intervention)
Edit: my understanding of the find familiar spell,it summons a fey in the form of a animal of your choosing,so I think this would work, but what if the wizard tried useing find familiar after polymorphing "me"? Would a new fey appear,or would "I" be summoned, and if so,would I return to being a simple animal? This has no bearing on the original question, but still something I'm curious about.
They could be polymorphed into a tabaxi, yes- familiars don't have list any immunity to being polymorphed.
As far as then becoming a wizard and going in search of their missing master? You'd be an ex-familiar at that point but I don't see why it wouldn't be allowed.
The real question is would you be able to use the familiar features of going into them and being able to spy or give them commands once they're polymorphed, in that case I would say the polymorphed familiar wouldn't be able to do those things. It would just be whatever it was polymorphed into.
Casting true polymorph on a familiar, a spirit of some kind bound to the will of the caster....that's an interesting concept. I honestly don't know how that would work out.
Yes, you can change your familiar into a Tabaxi using True Polymorph. Note, it has to keep the same CR. Most familiars are CR 0, so you could change these into a Tabaxi that would have the stats of Commoner but given the racial features (take statblock, apply the ASI, traits, etc). Other familiars might have higher CR like the CR 1/8 Poisonous Snake or the ones granted by Pact of the Chain for Warlocks.
And yes, they remain a familiar with all the benefits granted by the spell. Why? Polymorph spells replace the statblock used for the creature. Technically, however, a familiar uses the statblock of the creature form but all the familiar goodies like telepathy and stuff are not in the statblock (D&D Beyond includes them adding to the sheet as a convenience, but this is not the RAW). The benefits are from the spell, which do not indicate the statblock of the familiar's form is changed. Regardless of what form your familiar is in, you retain all benefits of the Find Familiar spell, because those benefits are separate from the familiar's form/statblock.

Interesting. Rollplay wise,I think I can make this work. They were already single-mindedly focussed on freeing their captured wizard, now I can just alter that to be the familiar carrying out her master's telepathic orders. (The wizard is in hell,so this would have just been their last order before communication was cut off from being on a different plane.)
Stat Wise though? Based on what you said, that could be tricky, but I could probably find a GM who'd let it slide. (Or I can just make it a polymorphed awakened housecat )

Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
Hmm...I suppose it's technically possible.
