So I'm uncertain if there's a RAW for this, so I thought I'd ask the amazing community.
I hired 4 people to escort a cart from south of Silverymoon to Greenest. (For those unfamiliar with the sword coast, it's what could be classified as a far journey.)
The contents of the cart aren't terribly valuable, and the trip wasn't particularly dangerous.
How much should the hirelings be paid? For either NPC or PC's.
The journey is, very roughly, 1500 miles. That's about 63 days of travel going at a normal pace, assuming no interruptions or stopping at taverns, or being slowed down through cities to pay tolls, etc. Probably best to round it up to about 70 days. Untrained hirelings cost 2sp per day while skilled hirelings cost 2gp. So 70 x (2x4) = 560. So either 560sp (56gp) or 560gp.
Hoard of the Dragon Queen has Baldur's Gate to Waterdeep at 60 days (as a caravan has a 15 mile per day rate with a rest day after every 5 days) and a distance of 750 miles.. As Silverymoon to Greenest is even further, and there isnt a road in a direct line, it is going to take a lot longer.
Looking at the different maps (I'm eyeballing the major roads here), you are probably looking at 115-120 days at a caravan speed pace (and looking at 100pctOGL's 1500 mile estimate, I'm bang on with 120). If they are going solo (which might be faster but more dangerous), they could push on at either 20 or 30 miles per day (remember horses still need rest). So it could be 95 or 70 days.
Depending on who is organising this sort of journey, they might have connections that allow them to use teleportation circles to get from Silverymoon to Waterdeep, taking almost half the journey out of the equation.
It's not a caravan, just a cart, so the 24 mile per day at a normal pace would apply and no need to stop every 5 days. I accounted for it not being a straight journey as I actually have an enhanced version of Mike Schley's big map with all the roads added in but short of getting out a ruler and painstakingly measuring it, 1500 is about close to roughly being right, give or take a 100 miles.
