I'm trying to create a custom weapon for my campaign, and added a homebrew spell to the weapon to represent an ability of said weapon. Ideally, I would want the "spell" to appear in the 'attacks' section of the character sheet, for easily accessible damage rolling. However, when attempting to add the "spell" as an attack I noticed that there was no option to customize the spell, and therefore no option to add it as an attack. When adding the spell by itself to a character, the option is present. help?
Magic Items are designed to be basically independent and insulated from the character.
I’m assuming that, since the spell is not automatically displaying itself, that it requires a saving throw and not an attack roll. Right? What you might be able to do is jerryrig the spell to to trick it into displaying itself. I’m not sure what exactly the Magic Item’s spell “special feature” does or is supposed to do, so I can’t even guess as to how you programmed it. But, if you either check “as part of weapon attack,” or possibly if you set the “attack type” to either side anger or melee, ether of those may possibly be able to trick the spell into displaying itself for you. It may indicate that an attack roll is required, I honestly don’t recall exactly, but you can indicate not to in the txt of the item.
Alternatively, you could probably design the special feature of the weapon as an action attached to a feat and add the feat directly to the character sheet. (I know there’s a Modifier to add a feat that appears as available for magic items, but it doesn’t work, or at least doesn’t work with homebrewed feat.) Skip the spell, skip attaching it directly to the weapon, make it simple on yourself.
I know they plan to add Actions to magic items at some point so you would just be able to do it the way it’s actually supposed to work at some point, but there’s no ETA at this time.
You are correct in assuming, it is using a saving throw - it's an AoE. I tried messing with it a little bit, but as you said, it's more trouble than it's worth.
I'll probably just let my players decide how they want to handle it, they're probably the ones who are going to be using it anyway.
Thanks for helping :)

I am familiar with the custom action function, but trying to avoid having to use it
