I am interested in running Rime of the Frostmaiden for a group of intrepid, if diminutive, adventurers. Challenges and foes will be sized appropriately.
This is both an interest check thread, and a place to submit your character concepts. We will be using the D&D 5e system, though I do have the Mouse Guard rpg for reference and inspiration.
Mice characters are encouraged, of course, but other small creatures may possibly be allowed. Crow-sized Kenku or turtle-sized tortle could work, while more predatory hawk-sized Aarakocra or cat-sized Tabaxi probably would not. No rodentivores please, but if you have a small anthropomorphic animal you would like to play, please run it by me. As for ability scores, roll (always re-roll ones) or point buy.
Combat will be “theater of the mind.” Maps, when provided, will be for reference only. Obviously this adventure will be tailored to fit this unique party, but I have a tendency to go off-piste with published sources anyway.
I am relatively new to 5e, coming from a distant 2e background, but I have run PBPs in a galaxy far, far away. Please be able to check in and post each day, and I will do the same. I will update this post when the game is closed to new submissions, and the selection process is complete. Looking forward to this!
Update: Reopening recruitment for another mouse, or possibly a pika. Any further submissions will be considered in a reserve capacity.
Edit to add: I would be remiss not to plug David Petersen’s Mouse Guard stories and art, but familiarity with the setting is absolutely not necessary, in order to play. http://www.mouseguard.net/
Interesting concept. If a crow or raven might, for example, be a reflavoured Kenku, what would a "typical" mouse character be like? Are you thinking of something like the Rabbitfolk from UA?
Definitely interested, really enjoy the Mouse Guard series. I can understand playing smaller stuff like kenku or the tortle example, but how exactly would Mice characters work? Is there a homebrew race or UA we'd be using for them? Or would we reflavor other races to fit the campaign's theme? Like a Half-Orc as a Tough Mouse, or an Elf as a Swift one?
Also would this just be inspired by Mouse Guard or would it be taking place in the setting, like could a character be a guard member?
Mice will have keen senses (Proficiency in Perception), and may add +2 to an Ability of their choice, and also +1 to a different Ability of their choice. Regardless of race, the modifiers may be placed in the player’s choice of abilities. Reflavoring other races is a viable option, subject to my approval. Different races may have different senses and vision, but speed will be handled in a more narrative fashion.
This game will be taking place in Icewind Dale, within the Forgotten Realms setting; though there is no real reason why it could not also be the Mouse Guard setting. In any case, let’s say that Icewind Dale is sufficiently removed by distance (and perhaps time), from the established settings and characters, that we will not be encountering the places or heroes from the stories. The MouseGuard itself exists, patrolling and keeping small creatures safe. The core party of PCs could well be such a patrol.
I saw Mouseguard stuff a long time ago and wish I’d gotten more into the story! I love the idea. It makes me think of Secrets of NIHM a little. Anywho, time to see what I can put in a cloak:
I intend to move forward and start this campaign sometime this weekend. Thus far, there are three mice in the Mouse Guard proper, and irregulars include a gecko wizard and a bat druid. I will leave recruitment open for one more, if there is further interest.
I would like to reopen recruitment for another mouse, and further reserve slots are also welcome, for possible future consideration. Current party complement is as follows:
Mouse Fighter
Mouse Rogue
Rabbit Ranger
Bat Druid
Spider Warlock
Lizard Wizard
The game has been going a few weeks now, and they are about to level up, so submit a 2nd level character. I am trying to keep a core Mouse Guard theme, so will give preference to mouse characters at this time; however, they are about to rescue a pika, which I might also consider. Check it out here:
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
This is the first I’ve ever seen this world! Looks super cute. I’m downloading the comics now so will try to read them :)
I obviously don’t know the world at all, but love the creative ideas just seen above. Let me start with the rolls and update here in a bit as I ponder what sounds fun, and what would fit in well with the group you’ve got. Ability scores: 151313121514
Name: Dib (mouse pet of one of my Urchin Characters, so this will go into my own personal universe lore as backstory for the pet ^^) Class: Wizard, bladesinger - I see you have a wizard, but don’t know where they were going, and you need another melee class as well. So this can be both maybe? I have to explore the subclass a bit more. Rough backstory: Dib was a curious little guy, often getting into trouble, so when Usul picked him up and brought him home to someplace warm he was all too happy to have a home. It turns out that Usul, though a bit of a rogue, was also friends with a wizard in town who was teaching him some simple arcane skills. One day, Usul and Kwiz (the wisened old wizard’s nickname) were working on a spell and cast something on Dib ((Find Familiar to turn Dib into a familiar)), but something went a bit weird and Dib was transported up to the Dale. Though he still occasionally gets flashes of what his friend is off doing when dreaming, he’s now seemingly imbued with the arcane himself, and has since begun studying a bit on his own when he can sneak into the library here or there, trying to find out what happened, but also just enjoying his ‘new’ life.
If chosen, how should I do the race on the sheet? Just any race that makes sense? Plus the proficiencies you said above? Something else?
I am going to continue with my first-come-first-served selection process, recruiting both the Bard and the Monk. Welcome Halfast and Siyaj!
Speak with Small Beasts would be the common language all would know, but might be expanded to include additional languages. Predators also have a common cant, and creatures have their own distinctive languages as well.
Kev, you seem quite active, and I would love to keep you as my first reserve slot? Of course, I hope to engage and keep all my players, but this is pbp, and attrition occurs.
Apophis, feel free to put together a character for the second reserve slot, should another opening present itself.

Blackbur! He’s had his cloak for a bit now, patrolling the ice several seasons. He wants to help how he can but his sword can’t tackle this alone. He needs help.
