It's a cold rainy, evening in Neverwinter. You're each exhausted from the day's travel and find yourselves sitting alone in a dockside tavern by the name of the Red Dragon. You're sitting alone, mulling over your life when the door is kicked open by an unusually jubilant dwarf who announces,
"A round of drinks for everyone!
The dwarf is covered head to toe in mud and blood is sporting a black eye, but from the smile on his face, you wouldn't know it. He produces one of the largest rubies you have ever laid eyes on and slams it onto the bar as payment. The dwarf is followed by a stern looking male human with an enormous broadsword strapped to his back. He too is covered in a fair share of blood and a large bruise seems to be developing on the right half of his face. He rolls his eyes at teh dwarf's exorbitant outburst before taking a seat at the bar and ordering a piece of raw meat to help with what looks to be the start of quite a large knot on his head.
The dwarf then bellows, "My name is Gundren Rockseeker and the severe-looking man to my left is Sildar Hallwinter and we are looking for stalwart men and women of brave hearts and good characters to share an adventure. I need assistance guiding my caravan south along the High Road to the sun swept foothills of the Sword Mountains. 25 gold goes to any man willing to brave this adventure!"
"Thanks for the drink, master Gundren." A hooded figure in the dark corner of the tavern speaks out. The soprano voice indicates the person is a woman. "I'd like to take your job. But before that …could you please tell me why you are covered in blood. Why did those bastards think today is a good day to die under your blade?"
A purple-skinned tiefling in dark, patchwork clothing looks up from his table, pushing back his dark hair to inspect the bloody dwarf and his companion. His orange eyes, ridged horns, and tail are indicative of his infernal ancestry. A magpie perches on his shoulder. When he hears word that there's a job out of town, he heads over to the dwarf and his companion and takes a seat at the bar. "Mr. Rockseeker, then, that's your name? Pleasure, I'm Tegan Adrastos. My magics may be useful in this adventure of yours. So, deal, signed, sealed, delivered, when are we leaving? And should we be expecting more of, uh... this?"
The Sword Mountains you say, how convenient. i planned on leaving for phandalin in just a few days.
The person speaking is a man, probably in his early 30s. He has brown hair, blue eyes and looks rather unnoteworthy. He wears a sturdy brown coat reaching approximatly to his knees and on his chest he carries what could almost be described as some sort of "backpack" with various small pockets and containers on the outside. with him he also carries a spear that besides a red ribbon tied below the tip, is just as unnoteworthy.
The blood, is it even your opponents, or ist it your own. If its the latter i would see a healer. To your fortune you have one very close nearby. Let me know when i can help.
A lithe, azure-skinned man with sunken eyes sidles up to the dwarf and wraps his arm around him.
"Now, friend, you made a terrific choice. You may not have heard of me -- Tarquin Myron of the Misnar Fighters Guild. Star student, successful experiment, and professional mercenary. All that blood on you? And that nasty little bruise you got? Wouldn't have happened with me around. I'm a surefire professional -- I can kill them dead before they get close enough to touch you. You won't regret hiring me."
OOC: working on my char sheet rn will add it later
"Allow me to introduce myself, Brother Thaddeus of the Church of Moradin, trying to bring the light of the forgelord to these frontier towns. I'd be happy to guard some supplies, I was going that way anyway."
Brother Thaddeus is a young Dwarven man, flame red hair and piercing green eyes.
Gundren laughs before lifting his ale in the man with blue eye’s direction, “thank you my friend but myself and Sir Hallwinter prefer to heal the old fashion way. Besides it’s just a few bumps and bruises, nothing a little ale can’t cure. Isn’t that right, Sildar?” he says, clasping Sildar on the back.
Sildar grunts before downing another ale and motioning to the barkeep to bring him another as he removes the piece of raw meat from his head.
“The only thing I need a cure for Rockseeker is your desire to fight anyone and anything that dares cross your path whether or not you be outmanned,” Sildar says.
Gundren waves him off, “what’s life without a little adventure, Sildar. Besides, the fight did us good. We learned a valuable lesson and got a ruby for our troubles. Now, I believe our newfound friends are in need of another round and perhaps a little more detail about what our adventure entails…what say you, Sildar?
“You’re right, they should know what hell you are about to drag them and us into and as for whether you should be expecting more of this…” Sildar says looking at the tiefling before gesturing to himself.
“Travel with him long enough and it will be all you come to expect,” Sildar says gesturing to Gundren.
Gundren laughs, “ignore him, he is simply trying to scare you. However, I cannot lie to you all. I make light of this situation, but it is a dangerous path I mean to take. The High Road is riddled with dangers of all kinds. Goblins, monsters, and creatures unlike any you have ever seen before. Many have risked their lives following this path and few have made it to the end. The task is simple, accompany me and Sir Hallwinter on the High Road to the foothills of the Sword Mountains. There is a caravan I mean to deliver to the people there. Once that is done, you are all free to resume whatever lives you lead with a tale of a harrowing adventure and a bit of gold in your pocket. If there are any objections, I suggest you voice them now. Because if not we leave at dawn.”
*Players interact with Gundren (If there are any questions for Gundren, now would be the time to voice them)*
Tegan shrugs. "Sounds good to me, honestly. I can handle whatever the road throws our way, no problem. And so can Mordecai,"He brags, giving the magpie on his shoulder a pat on the head.
"You didn't answer my question…But I love what you said!" The person in the dark corner stands up. She takes off her hood and reveals a face of a young Wood Elf. She has bronze skin, night black hair and silver eyes which are similar to the glowing moon.
The Elf girl waltzes through the tables. She slaps a rude guy who tried to touch her hip, picks up ale from him, drinks it in a gulp, ignores the voice of protest and finally stands in front of Gundren. She smiles. "I'm glad to know our employer has balls of iron! Well met Master Gundren. I'm … " The Elf takes a glance at the rubies in the Dwarf's hand. "Jade. Just call me Jade please."
Gundren turns to the man with the deep voice, “the monsters have been here longer than you, and I have been alive. There was a time where they once ruled these lands and they wish to rule them once again. Any help you provide will be greatly appreciated, friend. As for what Mr. Hallwinter said about hell…ignore it. He likes to try to scare those that travel with us, see if they are really as brave as they claim to be. Those that are full of fear tend to back out when he says something like that.”
He then turns to Tegan, “welcome aboard Tegan and Mordecai, and thank you for offering your assistance. As to whether you can handle whatever troubles you will come across, that remains to be seen. But, I have every confidence that it will be no problem for you and your friend here.”
As Gundren’s eyes land on Jade, he can’t help the boisterous laugh that erupts from him, “You. I like you. I’ve never met a woman or an elf that can hold their ale, as well as I, can especially after putting someone in their place as well as you did. Well met, Jade, and welcome. Now if that’s all, I suggest we all get some shut-eye. Dawn comes earlier than you might think.”
Gundren puts down his ale and walks away from the bar leaving you all with Sir Hallwinter. Sir Hallwinter glances at each of you in turn before raising his glass and drinking the rest of his ale. He nods his head before following Gundren upstairs to the rooms.
Tegan scratches his neck, looking at Gundren and Thaddeus as the dwarves head up. He glances over at Jade. "Well, he seems like quite the character, doesn't he?"

The next morning, you all arrive downstairs well-rested and unsure of what lies ahead. You all meet back up downstairs in the tavern where you first met Gundren and Sir Hallwinter. You’re all patiently waiting for the jubilant dwarf to make his appearance when you are approached by the barkeep, a grizzly older gentleman who walks with a bit of a limp. He looks over all of you before grunting and asking,
"are you the folks waiting for the dwarf and knight?"
Tegan nods without really looking at the barkeep, focused on rearranging stones with strange marks scratched into them on the table he is sitting at. Mordecai watches intently.
