First watch Elwyn - 5, Yamdum - 13, Ben - 10, Cormac - 18, CC - 24, Ned - 13 DM roll
12
The party settle into the first couple of hours of their watch. The cloud cover dissipates and the night is clear, the stars now providing some light over the ocean.
You stare into the darkness, but see nothing. Turning your head from side to side, listening for anything carried by the wind, turns up nothing.
To the East a storm rages, the first mate manning the ships wheel says to Elwyn and Ben; "Looks like a magic storm over there...horrible things. Our current course...and hers...we should be ok. But let's keep one eye on it." Every now and then you hear distant thunder, that sounds subtly different to the normal thunder you would recognise.
((Anyone want to change position or anything before the second?))
Status CC (1 exhaustion, disadvantage on ability checks) Elwyn (EDIT: removed the exhaustion) Ned Ben (1 exhaustion, disadvantage on ability checks) Yamdum (adv on perception from crows next) Cormac

"A magic storm huh, that rather reminds me of a story I heard about the archmage Drawmij."He tells the first mate and Ben "He supposedly lives in a cavernous underwater fortress beneath the Azure Sea. Now a long time ago one of his experiments...well let´s say it didn´t go quite as planned, resulting in a storm of the century. You can still find ships displaced by that storm as far as Crystalmist mountains, or so I heard." Short pause. "Anyway, let´s hope we can stay out of that unpleasant weather." He adds and returns to watching that storm.
Elwyn stays put. New perception if needed:6
(OOC: Looks about right, at least this is the deployment Yamdum suggested :-)

((@DM What direction is our ship's point of sail? Where is the storm in relation to our ship? Starboard? Port? Aft or fore to Starboard? Aft or fore to Port?))
((Interesting question! I hadn't necessarily specified where the ship had come from...as didn't want it to potentially conflict with backstories without it getting too complex...
But in my mind the ship is sailing south, tracking the coast(ish)....coming from the principality of Ulek area. So the ship would be sailing South-South-West with the storm being port-stern.
((@DM Perfect! Thank you. That helps tremendously - although if we are travelling SSW then the starboard side of our ship would be more to the West... so wouldn't the storm be on our starboard-stern? Or should we be concerned that the firstmate is unreliable?))

Second watch
The crew carry on with their duties largely ignoring the adventurers. You hear snippets of conversation as they move about the ship; "...that dwarf flew up the rigging like a sparrow, gotta have some experience at sea..." "...if he's sick on me I'll chuck him o'er board mesel'..." "...bloody hell, look at that, he's lashed himself to the mast...armour an' all!..."
(Perception rolls: Elwyn - 24, Yamdum - 23, Ben - 8, Cormac - 18, CC - 15, Ned - 17) DM roll;
15
The clear night continues, with the stars still providing a little illumination to the setting. Tho boat carries on, largely on the same course, tacking it's way South-South-West.
Elwyn, Yamdum and Ned adjust to the surroundings and track the storm easy enough, as the first mate predicted their paths do not cross and eventually it disappears over the curve of the horizon. Ben and CC suffer from the effects of seasickness, and whilst alert struggle to keep too much focus and do not see anything untoward. Cormac stays vigilant in the centre of the ship, watching both sides.
Towards the end the second hour (4 hours into the night) the crew start to rotate shifts. As this is happening Elwyn and Yamdum notice something;
Aft of the ship from your positions and vantage points you notice multiple shapes in the water, trailing the ship. You focus on these shapes, study their movement and look for clues as to what they might be. Both of you come to the same conclusion, sharks. Normal sharks, but quite a few of them swimming in the wake of the boat.
The crew are busy with shift change and the first mate is focused ahead on the horizon.
Elwyn walks over to the first mate although at least Ben should be within earshot. "Ahem, I´m not sure if this would be perfectly normal in these waters but we are being followed by a gam, herd, frenzy, school, shiver or whatever you call it, of sharks. Thought you should know. Should we wake up the captain perhaps?" Elwyn asks the first mate more than a bit nervous about their new company.
Cormac will continue his patrol of the center of the boat, only pausing to speak with any of the crew that may stop near him. While he does not plan to spend a lot of time on the ship once they reach Saltmarsh he does his best to get to know some of the crew by their names at the very least.
