The notes seem innocent at first, noting how some plants (he seems to be able to communicate with them) like their soil, sun, water, etc. but then it takes a slightly darker turn, going into more detail of how he eliminated “the invaders” as he called them, referring to burrowing bugs and insects, before finally ending on a dark note;
”They’ll burn and bleed, and those left will realize; you can’t eat money.”
This appears to be the last message he wrote before he disappeared.
Carcan relays what he reads to the group and adds at the end, "Well it seems as though this is not just a straightforward kidnapping. Any ideas on what this could mean? Do you think we should we check back with Mr. Stronghold about this, or keep it to ourselves?"
Victorin watches as the others search the room. He would help, but the team had it well in hand and the room was only so big after all. He listens intently as Carcan relays what he discovered in the notebook.
Victorin chuckles at the last bit “You can’t eat money, but you can sure buy a lot of food. What, or who. was this kid messing around with?”Turning to Carcan “I don’t think we need to check in with the boss after every little find. We think he has secrets, we can have a few of our own.”
“So the kid had magic ability of his own. Either he transported himself out, or someone came in and got him. You all ready to head out?”
"Ready to go. Maybe he got involved with some nature cult, or maybe he's just a little ecoterrorist," Heli finds it a bit odd that the group in its majority doesn't want to report this seeminlgy important information to Stronghold, but follows out still.
You go to the garage, where the vehicles are being made, maintained, and driven. Since you need passage across the desert, you need either the Series 1 Sandstorm, a smaller, faster, and lighter vehicle that won't be able to take any hits, and hasn't been tested too incredibly carefully, but will at least get you where you need to go faster than the Series 3 Dunewrecker, a sturdy, heavy, larger, all-terrain power walker.
There's a glimmer of excitement in his eyes and a subtle half-smile on his face as Carcan turns to the group, "I've been wanting to try out this new Series 1 for a while now, could be fun."
After a quick pit stop in his quarters to pick up his gear, Victorin enters the garage wearing a midnight black traveling cloak, a faint odor of brimstone, and a backpack slung casually over one shoulder. He quickly picks up on Carcan’s excitement. “Never been out in one myself, but the Series 1 looks fun. Speed is our friend in a case like this” he turns to the others “Anyone know how to drive this thing?”
Kai sets his backpack down in the vehicle's trunk and swings himself over the door into the driver's seat. "Not this specific model, but I've driven my fair share. Gimme an hour or two, I'd be able to take the thing apart, put it back together." He cracks his knuckles and moves his hands around the controls, getting a quick feel for everything. "Alright. We're doing nine miles through the desert, heading zero-nine-six. Keep an eye on the horizon for marauders, bandits, desert pests and the like. Strap yourselves in."
(Looked through the character sheets - only Kai has land vehicle proficiency)
"Series 1 it is. I don't fancy walking in the desert though, this thing seems fragile. Can you make it a bit sturdier ah.." she looks at the aarakocra, squinting a bit, the smiling, as if she remembered something, "Kai. Maybe some more plates or something, i don't know how this works."
Ok, so the Sandstorm is essentially a very rough prototype and is a knockoff Ford built for the desert. Fast? Yes. Reliable? About as much as a Skoda. It doesn’t have proper sand protection gear, the engine is prone to overheating, and the frame is flimsy. It’s also a hideous shade of orange that someone thought would look cool.
(Never heard of a Skoda before. Are they reliable?)
Kai leans out of the seat to face Heli: "Vehicle plating's the same as worn armor - a whole lot heavier and a whole lot slower. Makeshift armor mounted to the sandstorm - makes a fast, fragile vehicle into a slow, still rather fragile one. If you want sturdy, able to withstand blows, we'll take the Dunewrecker."
"I think that would be safer and easier for us, we are less likely to end up just walking across the desert. We can vote on it, that should be fair enough."
Quinn smirks "The sandstorm will be fine. What was it that the bird said? Give him an hour and he'll be able to put it back together again. Unless of course he was lying, and then we will all be screwed."
For all his bluster, Quinn looks a littler nervous around the vehicles, his hand wandering to the hilt of his belt knife.

“I will take responsibility for what I have done. [...] If must fall, I will rise each time a better man.” ― Brandon Sanderson, Oathbringer.
Kai calmly leans back in the sandstorm's drivers seat. "Either one's fine with me. It'll take a bit longer to put the sandstorm back together if the thing explodes, I'll say that. Plus, while it's faster I don't believe it'll be the difference between finding Luke and not finding him."
Struggling to hide the disappointment on his face, Carcan concedes "No you're right, the Dunewrecker is probably the smarter option for this. I'll find another time to try out the Sandstorm."

You copy them with a decent amount of precision, would you like to move on or is there anything else you’d like to check?
Farewell.

(Anything picked up by the Wand of Secrets?)
(I’m so sorry I forgot about that! Yes, there is a small hidden panic room in case of emergencies. It’s bare and full of dust and cobwebs)
Nothing else though.
Farewell.

Kai gives a solid nod. "Ready to move out."
