We sail to a world of adventure and exploration! A world of bloodthirsty vampire conquistadors, territorial merfolk druids, rampaging dinosaurs, and swashbuckling pirates! Today, mateys, we set sail for Ixalan!
Races: Humans, orcs, goblins, and sirens from Plane Shift Ixalan, with the following changes:
Goblin: Your walking speed is 30 feet, your climbing speed is 40 feet, you have proficiency in Acrobatics, and you gain the following feature: Cunning Action. You can take the Dash, Disengage, or Hide action as a bonus action.
Siren: You get +1 Dexterity; your friends cantrip requires verbal components only, your spellcasting ability for it is Charisma, and it doesn't work if the target can't hear you; and you have proficiency in your choice of Persuasion, Performance, or any one tool.
Human: You can choose variant human instead, but if you do, you get a tool instead of a skill.
Backgrounds: I recommend the Pirate background, because you're pirates, but anything with two skills, two in any combination of tools and languages, and a minor feature works.
Level: 3rd.
Gear: Starting equipment from class and Pirate background, 2d4*10 gp worth of treasure, and a common magic item along the lines of the ones from Xanathar's Guide to Everything.
The worlds of Magic: the Gathering are practically dripping with magic, so everyone gets a free cantrip or psionic talent. Your spellcasting ability for it is your choice of Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma. Calculate your spell attack bonus and/or spell save DC normally.
In place of Common is a crude Trade-Tongue, completely unusable for anything complicated. There are also two faction-specific languages--Itzocan for the Sun Empire and Coalition Pidgin for the Brazen Coalition--as described at the bottom of page 6 of Plane Shift Ixalan. You all know Trade-Tongue and, as you are all Brazen Coalition pirates, Coalition Pidgin.
If you roll a 1 on an attack roll, ability check, or saving throw, you automatically fail. If you would have failed anyway, you critically fail.
If you roll a 20 on an attack roll, ability check, or saving throw, you automatically succeed. If you would have succeeded anyway, you critically succeed.
Inspiration stacks and functions as non-renewable Luck Points.
We'll be using the XGtE optional rules for tools.
Please, if you won't be able to post for a few days or longer, tell me so I can play your character for you until you get back.
I'm looking for 4-5 players, preferably at least moderately experienced.
Oh, this sounds cool. I haven't played PbP here, but it seems similar to other ones I've played. I'd like to make a Rogue from the Brazen Coalition from the PDF.
Arrrrhhhh pirates !!! Count me in ! I am not fix on one character yet, I'm flexible depending on what the group need (but tempted but the Storm Sorcerer)
EDIT: actually I might do a human hexblade if its ok
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"Blood bags to the east. Sun fanatics and tree huggers to the west. And us smack-dab in the middle of it all. I like them odds! Grifhook is the name and explosions are my game!"
Name: Grifhook
Gender: Male
Class: Artificer 3
Subclass: Gunsmith
Background: Sailor (Pirate Variant)
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Stats: Str 10 (+0) Dex 16 (+3) Con 13 (+1) Int 15 (+2) Wis 12 (+1) Cha 8 (-1)
Equipment: A Thunder Cannon; a light crossbow with 20 bolts; a set of studded leather armor, two daggers, a set of thieves' tools, a dungeoneer's pack, a bag of holding, a belaying pin (club), 50 feet of silk rope, a rabbit's foot, a set of common clothes, a belt pouch containing 10 gp, 5 x 10 gp worth of treasure and a orb of direction.
Armor Class: 15
Attack: Thunder Cannon+5 to hit (range 150'/500'), 2d6+3 piercing damage + 1d6 thunder damage
Attack: Light Crossbow +5 to hit (range 80'/320'), 1d8+3 piercing damage
Attack: Dagger +5 to hit (reach 5' or range 20'/60'), 1d4+3 piercing damage
For the stats, I used the standard array since you didn't specify which way you wanted to do things on that end. So if you prefer another method, I'll make the necessary changes. Also, would it be possible to replace my crossbow with other equipment? Such as a handaxe (reflavored as a machete) and smith's tools? I only ask as I don't see too much use in having it when I have my Thunder Cannon.
As for backstory, how would you want to do that? Have everyone involved make them together? Key off whatever story you have in mind? Or simply make our own and have you mash them together? Because so far it's just established that we are pirates in the Brazen Coalition and I'd assume also part of the same crew.
I’d be making a goblin artificer (alchemist) who lives only to destroy and blow things up, and if on a ship, he announces himself as the only one who can use them (unless he says someone else can, though).
I don’t have stats yet, but I thought I’d give you his personality and basic outline to see if I get in. I’ll edit here if I need to fix anything.
I'd like to play a Human priest of the Storm ( don't know if there are gods or if he just asks the elements (water/blue and either death/black or life/white ))
You could say that Driss was born under the Black Flag and he has spent much of his life on boats. First, a hand and help then scrubbing the floors and as he grew learning the way of the sailors.
After many years at sea, he doesn't remember when he started praying to the storms but he knows one thing for sure, they answer.
Tell me if you need me to send you a detailed sheet (it's ready ) or if we wait to see if we make the cut.
Ronan, I think I can probably figure out some way of fitting an artifact-level weapon into the plane somewhere. (In other words, Hexblade's fine).
Monkey, some of those Dire Fleet mages can be pretty nasty. The Order of the Ghostslayer is just another kind of necromancer and the Order of the Profane Soul is EK/AT for blood hunters and warlocks, but the Orders of the Lycan and the Mutant are pretty much Innistrad-only. (In other words, blood hunter's allowed, but only the Ghostslayer and Profane Soul).
Karpmageddon, yeah, standard array's good (I knew I forgot something). Sure, you can replace your 25-gp light crossbow and 1-gp pack of bolts with a 20-gp set of smith's tools, a 5-gp handaxe, and a gold piece. As for backstory, I think I'll have you collaborate on a few details once we've got the party finalized.
TheG111, there are no storm gods on Ixalan. The Sun Empire has a trio of sun gods (surprise!) and there's a bat-god of night somewhere, but that's it. Your magic comes straight from the sea.
On that note, recruiting is now closed because I do not want to DM for a party in the double digits. Also, the campaign will be using side initiative.
Arr! Avast, me hearties!
