I heard something of this goblin encampment, and it may be more than it seems, someone was looking for it a few years ago, calling it the "Sunless Citadel".

"Wow yeah that guy with the frog, that was some time ago. Haven't heard about the Sunless Citadel in some time until he brought it up. Never saw him again either which was fine by me. Druid I believe, not a fan of us farmers and people who live in actual houses, and that frog had shifty eyes. The old road used to go through there but after the Suel Imperium unleashed the Invoked Devastation, the fortress sank into the ravine and was abandoned. The road was abandoned soon after. Sunlight never reaches it anymore so hence the name. Goblins love it and they can have it, no sure how you would grow apples down there though."
"Anyway, you must be off, thank you for doing this, people here think I am worrying for nothing but it doesn't feel right. Something has happened I fear."
It takes you 4 hrs to reach the ranger station near the woods. The ranger that brought you here was quiet the whole way.
Their leader addresses you after sizing you up.
"Hello my friends, thank you for doing this. Please make camp here before heading into the woods. If you leave early, you can make it there and back in daylight, or what passes for daylight anyway in the woods. Stay on the road as that is our usual patrol route such that it is. You may collect dead wood only to make your fire in the woods nearby."
Apparently you will have to ask your questions tomorrow as he turns and leaves without another word.
Normally I would just run this encounter but since I am learning both 5e and these tools, let's work through this ambush and see what happens. I will try to use the encounter tool. Normally I would not just ambush you like this.
As you make camp, before you go to light the fire... you swear you see a one of the sticks actually move to avoid the flame... it does more than that! it's going to try and stab you!!!
(there are 4 of them and the encounter tool appears to be working, your PCs showed up and I was able to roll for the twigs. What do you see as players?)
They have an AC of 13 if you gain the initiative and want to take a swing at them.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
I may have missed a step. They have a stealth of +3 so my read of the rules is that this would be a good time to test their stealth against your perception. If you beat them in this test, you gain advantage on the initiative roll? Let me know how you have seen it played. Anyway, here is their stealth roll. 21
[OOC] Sorry, let's try that again. Perception roll: 14
I may be wrong, but I think if their stealth is higher than our individual perception (or passive perception, depends how you want to rule it) then they would get a surprise round on whomever failed the perception roll.
Edit: not sure what happened, but I'm on mobile and formatting is weird. Tried to change some text and the roll changed from 14 to 16. I changed it back.

You are correct, just found it on page 189. Their Stealth vs your passive wisdom, if it is higher, you are surprised. In this case then, all are surprised except Atillia. I say passive because you would not normally be looking for such creatures and with the rangers around did not expect any danger.
If you gain the initiative Atallia, one of them is quite a bit larger than the others, designate it as Twig A. AC13
I used the die roller, I must have messed up the damage part. Please roll your own damage as they hit Weber and Durthon for 1d4+1 damage.
They are all at melee range.
Thanks for the information about the tracker, it is pretty primitive. I will add everyone's PC to my Fantasy Grounds when I have time, it tracks combat very well.
Each twig staggers under the weight of your blows and fall to the ground lifeless and scattered... they are just dry sticks now and will make a good campfire however... they don't look sharp but when they were poking at you, they were sharp as daggers...
alerted by your shouts, the ranger runs over... bow drawn in the low ready position
"What is going on over here?!?! Can't a bunch of dwarves build a simple campfire without making a huge racket?!?!"
“A simple fire we can manage just fine! When the kindling has different ideas that’s a whole other matter! Are there anymore of these living twigs about here that we should know about?” Weber snips back at the ranger looking over his wound.

"I-I meant to offence Ms. Hucrele" Gus stammers, his cheeks reddening.
"I've heard the name Sir Bradford before," he says, absent-mindedly looking back towards his pack on the ground.
"We'll look for your children, and do what we can to bring them back to you." He smiles kindly.

"Always go with your gut, ma'am, I always say." Gus taps his forehead with his knuckles. "If you think somethin's up, always best to be sure."
"Right, which way to the ranger camp?" He looks at his companions whilst he turn to grab his pack.

players can’t see the combat tracker. The encounter builder and combat tracker are fairly primitive

I will roll for the Twigs then for Round 1.
Twig A will attack Durthon at +3 AC18 Attack: 22 Damage: Unable to parse dice roll.
Twig B will attack Weber at +3 AC14 Attack: 14 Damage: Unable to parse dice roll.
Twig C will attack Atillia at +3 AC16 Attack: 10 Damage: Unable to parse dice roll.
Twig D will attack Gus at +3 AC18 Attack: 23 Damage: Unable to parse dice roll.

[OOC] Gus would take the hit too, my sheet has shield equipped, he wouldn't be wielding it building camp.
Damage taken : 4
Attack: 14 Damage: 6
Attack: 10 Damage: 5
Atallia swings her quarter staff at Twig C, missing it, but follows up with a kick that strikes true.
Liarin: Against the Cult of the Reptile God

Durthon takes 2 damage "blasted plants! You will be firewood soon!" And swings his warhammer twice at the one that just hit him.
Attack: 15 Damage: 5
Attack: 16 Damage: 10
OOC: using war priest bonus action attack.
((Jeez you go to sleep and all hell breaks loose lol
I take 5 damage from the hit.))
Wever looks down in shock as the little wooden creature stabs him in the side. “What the!?”
((initiative: 17))
He wrenches the branch out of his side opening his palm towards the creature and let’s out a blast of energy.
((eldritch blast Attack: 9 Damage: 6))
((FYI if your using the combat roller tool when it asks for the dice you red to put in 1d8, etc other wise you get the parse error
just noticed I’ve done a range attack in melee combat so should have been at disadvantage 23 ))
Gus lets out a panicked sqeak when one of the bundles of twigs stabs him whilst he's preparing his bedroll. [he took 4 damage from the hit]
He hastily grabs his warhammer and hefts it, two handed, at his assailant, "Sneak up on a man preparin' his kip, that's just dirty fightin'!"
With a grunt he brings the hammer down.
Attack: 22 Damage: 7
