Recruiting for the PBF adventure Sunless Citadel from the Yawning Portal (5e)
I am not new to PBF but new to 5e, this is the longest PBF game I hosted on RPG Geek 931 posts Theft in Sandpoint
Campaign Notes: Looking for 4 1st level players , please post your PC below if you want to join. New Players are welcome! If it turns out to not be your thing, a polite "not for me" post is all that is needed If there is something I can change about my style to make it more fun or I am making clear mistakes, please let me know Good aligned Player's Handbook generated PCs only, please create your PCs using D&D Beyond using the Point Buy System
I rarely mess with people on alignment so feel free to be LG PG rated posts All NPCs that join the party can be trusted, I will specifically mention any that aren't If it goes well, I would like to move onto Ghosts of Saltmarsh (I can be out voted if the players want to go somewhere else) To speed things along, I will run the Easy Encounters and report back the results (you will not die or lose expendable equipment/spells) Please Like Posts you have read Please post "almost daily", even if you are fine with what the party is doing, please post something anyway to maintain the narrative This is a straight up dungeon crawl, I will be tracking combat results in Fantasy Grounds and posting screenshots to manage the manage the action but all rolls and such will be done in the forum.
Once we have the players, I will post the invite to the campaign.
We will be using the tooltips and die rollers here on the forums. We will learn as we go.
A link to your pc sheet is fine. PBF is different, slower but you have time to really role play your character and it doesn’t interfere with your other gaming so worth trying at least.
uses his vast knowledge of the streets from his time growing to work as a finder, whether people or items. On his last job he was sent to find a girl. Through the course of investigation finds the girl has been kidnapped and due to be sacrificed to a cult. He manages to disrupt the ritual but suffers a fatal blow in the process. As his vision fades to black he hears a mysterious voice in his head “Do you wish to live?”.
Backstory: Third out of five siblings, Durthon sought to make fortune in the army. He learned how to follow orders and the basic drills. He chose Hanseath as a god to follow, he was not completely unnoticed as he learnt how to brew mead, which he freely shared with his companions. Eventually he decided that the rigurous army discipline was not the best fit for him and declined to reenlist after serving his time.
OK cool, looks like we have 4 so I will close the recruiting.
Here is the campaign invite. Still learning D&D Beyond so any advice is helpful. I will get the first post ready. Let me know if you can't see Sunlit Citadel image. I can see it but I can't see it when I accessed the page from my phone so I don't really understand what happened.
While traveling to Saltmarsh, four adventurers are passing through the town of Burle where someone when a well dressed women approaches your caravan and talks to the lead teamster. The teamster points over to a group of 4 adventurers and she starts walking that way. As she approaches, you can see that she is quite distressed.
(please let me know if you can see this image)
She approaches the four of you and speaks:
"I have heard you are brave adventurers from the teamster heading to Saltmarsh. I would normally not bother you but two of my children were investigating a nearby goblin camp in Dreadwood and they have not returned. If the goblins caught them, they would have been ransomed but the rangers patrolling the edges of the woods have reported nothing of the sort and so I need someone to go after them. I can pay 125 gp each if you head out quickly, the rangers can show you the old road that leads past the goblin camp. You will have to stay for a night with the rangers but then you will be able to reach the goblin camp by noon the next day."
This is additional knowledge each player has as they traveled on their way to Saltmarsh. They are not secrets but something to roleplay as we get started
for Gus
When she mentions the name of a paladin that went with the children, you realize that Sir Braford is rumored to be in possession of an old sword called Shatterspike.
For Urthon
The goblin camp may be the site of an old dragon cult. It may have interesting artifacts!
For Weber
a local farmer approached you complaining he could not leave his cows out overnight because something was killing a couple of them each night. Wasn't goblins but something left small holes in their necks and left them to bleed out. What a waste!
For Atillia
A local bartender mentioned that someone else years ago named Belak was asking about the goblin camp, called it the Sunless Citadel, even had a HUGE frog with him.
Please post a greeting and ask any questions you may have before heading out to meet the rangers.
Gus closes the small book he is reading as the woman approaches and looks up at her. He nods a greeting when she starts speaking.
When she finishes, he wipes his gloved hand on his trousers and holds it out, "Well met, name's Gus. Goblin camp's a dangerous place for kids, how old are they? You mentioned someone went with 'em, has there been no sight nor sound of him either?"
[OOC} Hey folks, it's nice to meet you all, looking forward to adventuring with you.
"While I appreciate the compliment, they are grown children, they are accomplished adventurers like yourself, certainly able enough to handle those goblins. They left with Sir Braford a Paladin I believe and one of the rangers, Karakas I believe. We have heard nothing from any of them."
Weber throws the last piece of bread into his mouth and speaks while he chews. “If you’ve got someone that needs found, you’ve come to the right place. What can you tell me about these lads? What’s been going on that needed a goblin camp investigated?”
He wipes his hands on his legs, and dusts off any crumbs “been hearing reports of something meddling with the cattle, is this what they’re looking for?”
"The issue with the cows is part of it, we started having reports of cows being killed near the forest, not stolen, not killed an eaten. Not typical goblin behavior so we never suspected them. They do however trade some apples now and then and hold out one of them as having healing properties. We fed it to a sick hog and they were telling the truth. They sell it to the highest bidder each time and make some real coin. Sir Braford showed up and wanted to see for himself where goblins are growing these apples, said it was foolish to think goblins turned into benevolent apple growers and so the town and rangers decided to send a party out to learn more. It was supposed to be just a reconnaissance mission, spy on goblins picking apples and report back."
Durthon strokes his beard in thought while Weber and Gus speak before addressing the well dressed lady "I will go search for your lost children, and if those goblins are responsible for this they will have to answer for their crimes. Would you tell us your name and those of your children?"
The dwarf seems eager to help and quietly adds "I heard that some of those goblins are dragon worshippers and want to find out more about that too."
She tried to hide it but she obviously approves of your promise of retribution.
"Talgen my son and my daughter Sharwyn, I am Lady Kerowyn Hucrele, I run the merchant guild here. I tried to keep them here and let the rangers handle it but they are young and headstrong, I didn't realize they left until it was too late."

Hey, I'm interested in giving this a go. Fairly new to PbP, but have been playing D&D for a while.
What details do you need for the character, or just a link to the character sheet?
I've got a couple of ideas in the wings that would be fun for a dungeon crawl.
A link to your pc sheet is fine. PBF is different, slower but you have time to really role play your character and it doesn’t interfere with your other gaming so worth trying at least.

See if this works...
I can see the image in post #11.
One useful thing to have fancy formatting here is to add tooltips for spells, here are the available options: https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/homebrew-house-rules/9811-how-to-add-tooltips
