he sees your wound and the blood on the sticks, his demeanor changes quickly... he grabs a stick and inspects it...
"Living sticks?!?! Tell me what happened! I have seen wounds like this before on some livestock. Must be some sort of blight we have not seen before. Great, something else for us to worry about. If you see these sticks again, burn them, burn them all."
now that you have observed twig blights, their stealth rolls will be at a disadvantage
Gus places his hammer on the ground and squats to look at the smashed branches at his feet, gingerly touching the small tear in his gambeson where he can feel his ribs bruising under his mail.
"First time a campfire's ever attacked me when my back was turned," he chuckles dryly. "What in the Word are these things?"
"We have had some creepy vines try to grab us but never sticks. This is new. Your guess is as good as mine at this point. We will start looking for them from now on although how do you look out for sticks?!?!"
"It's unnerving to hear that there's new beasties around here that you've not encountered yet." Gus looks at the twig in the Ranger's hand, "I guess we'll just have to be extra careful."
“Burn ‘em all sounds a good plan to me” Weber picks up the remains of the blight that attacked him tossing it into the camp fire with a look of disgust.
”Do you think these creatures could be the ones responsible for killing the cattle? Surely they are too small for that, unless they have a larger brethren.”
"If they jabbed a cow in the neck, they would eventually bleed out, even if it was a small jab. Almost certainly this is your culprit. I will instruct the farmers to clear out any dead twigs they find and burn them. That will be a huge help."
"We are heading into town so you can use the ranger station, feel free to use the provisions as needed. You should be gone before we get back and do not sleep while in the forest. The Witch of the Wood may enter your dreams which may pretty ruin your day if something doesn't outright kill you. Follow the old road and you can't miss it. You will be there by mid day moving at a normal pace. Do not move further into the woods than you need to, we only patrol the outer rim and barely even that."
As they leave, it appears they have a wrapped body with them.
Unless you have some more questions for him, take a long rest and you will find yourself at your destination mid day tomorrow.
With no further questions to ask Weber looks for any food available and finds a comfortable stop to settle in for the evening and put the thought of murderous twigs behind him.
Durthon gathers as many twig pieces as he can and builds a bonfire with them "that should send a message to any other of these creatures that this ain't the place for them."
Noticing that the rangers are not familiar with these creatures he'll go to sleep without asking them more questions.
Seeing the wrapped body, Gus touches two fingers to the silver brooch pinned to his gambeson and mutters some words of passage and protection for the departed under his breath as they walk away.
No further questions on his mind, he readies for bed and pulls a small book out of his bag and reads until he falls asleep.
The night passes quietly and the provisions are quite good. Fully rested you head out at first light. The road is more of a path now but the rangers do what they can to keep it clear and so you make good time reaching your destination.
from the source material..
The Old Road passes to the east of a narrow ravine. At the road’s closest approach to the cleft, several broken pillars jut from the earth where the ravine widens. Two of the pillars stand straight, but most lean atop sloped earth. Others are broken, and several have apparently fallen into the dark depths. A few similar pillars are visible on the opposite side of the ravine.
A sturdy, knotted rope is tied to one of the leaning pillars on this side of the ravine.
The rope tied to one of the leaning pillars hangs down into the darkness of the ravine. Judging by its good condition, the rope couldn’t have been tied there any longer than two or three weeks ago. From the edge of the ravine, older and weathered handholds and footholds can be seen carved into the cliff face. These are goblin-carved.
You can easily climb down the knotted rope, using the wall to brace yourself. Using the carved indentations is slower but only slightly harder. The descent is 50 feet to the ledge
if you can read goblin
Turn around and go back! No Trespassing!! This means you!!
If someone passes a DC 10 Investigation or Survival Check
There have been many small campfires built here and nearby as recently as a month ago. Someone has taken the time to try to hide this fact. (if you are reading this, please share with the group)
"Yes" Durthon replies to Atallia "their sloppy effort at hiding the ashes makes it obvious if you know where to look." The dwarf looks at the runes and adds "I can't read what these say, do they make sense to anyone?"
"That scratching is supposed to be some sort of script? looks like a wild animal has been using the wall as a scratching post to me." Weber takes a closer look at the 'script' as though that would help make sense of it. Quickly losing interest in the writings, Weber turns his attention to the poorly hidden campsites and tries to find anything useful that could provide an identity for it's creators.
You find nothing else of interest in this location.
ooc: the way down is safe and requires no checks using the handholds or the rope, if you were in a hurry or being attacked, it could be an issue however as it does take some focus and your hands will be occupied while climbing/descending. While descending, this would be a good time to determine the marching order when entering the Citadel.
Whilst the others investigate the scratches and campfires, Gus studies the rope, "Looks sturdy enough, can't have been here long and it's definitely not Gob' construction."
He stows a book and the provisions he was nibbling in his pack, checks his weapons are secure then swings a leg down into the ravine, connecting with the highest knot his little legs can reach.
"I'll head down and make sure the bottom is clear," he says with a grunt, starting to carefully climb down.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Right into a some hungry giant rats! Gus can attack them directly, everyone else must use ranged attacks. Because this is an easy encounter, I will run it and see what happens and report back. All die rolls will be done here.

"Nobody's perfect, eh Attalia." Gus jokes. "Think yer right though, we should get some shut-eye."
He goes back to unpacking his bedroll, " Here, Attalia, you mentioned something to the lady back there, the Sun City, or something. What's that?"
