I'm looking for a little bit of role play, mixed in with some challenging monsters (but nothing too overpowering), and add a sprinkle of problem solving (not all issues can be solved with brute force alone).
The player count I'm looking for is around 4 - 6 PCs.
Here is the outline + rules. Please DM me with any questions and your character sheet.
Please DM me with your character sheet + backstory (read below in Character section) or with any questions you have!
Intro
You'll be starting off as captives of the Drow with no weapons, armor, or items. You will, hopefully, eventually escape and then try to get back to the surface world. Monstrous entities, horrors beyond your wildest imagination, and sights that cause your mind to disconnect from reality await you in the dark corners of this endless abyss.
Counterspell
Counterspell can not be used in this game (by npcs, monsters, or pcs)
Instead, you can counter a spell with a spell of the same school and then make a spell attack roll contested by the enemy's spell attack roll.
i.e.
Enemy casts a spell
You are allowed to make an arcana check to verify the spell
You successfully identify the spell as an enchantment spell
You can then use an enchantment spell of the same spell level to counter the spell.
Both of you roll a d20 and add your spell attack modifier to the roll.
The highest roller wins the battle. Either you successfully counter the spell, or the enemy gets their spell off.
A tie causes the spells to explode. Both you and the enemy caster must roll on the wild magic surge table.
Rolls for information can only be done if you're proficient or if something like it is mentioned in your background/lineage.
i.e. If your background mentions that you used to be a painter, you can roll for a check on a piece of art that you come across.
Or if you are proficient in arcana, you can roll to study an amulet that glows with magic.
This rule does not apply to roles made to identify a spell.
Characters
Starting out at level 1
Either use D&D beyond and send me a link to your sheet or a PDF copy will do just fine.
Standard PHB character creation. You can use the point buy system or dice roll system for ability scores (dice rolls will need to be in the forum post).
If you would like, you can change the visual description of your spells. This is only for flavor and can not change the mechanics of how your spell works.
Lineages, classes, character options from any 5E book are fine, though keep in mind you will be in dimly lit to no light in most places.
You will start off with no gear, but you have the ability to find it in the first section of the game. Your character sheet should have your equipment listed, but it should not be equipped or on your person.
Good aligned or neutral pcs are fine. No evil characters. Your characters should want to work together to get out of the Underdark and eventually help save it...
No homebrew
Unearthed arcana is allowed but please check with me first.
Please write a short (or longer, though preferably a couple pages or less) background about your character. No need to share this in the forum, but please put it in you character sheet.
Hello players!

Yes, using the Tasha's Cauldron Custom Lineage stats from page 8.

I am a Tabaxi rogue, pretty good stats.
btw, I only chose folk hero because all my books aren’t online, so it fits the closest to what I want.
I had a friend that rolled this well for our in person Candlekeep Mysteries. The other players were very jealous! Welcome.
Who is your patron btw. Or does your character not know?

Ability scores: 10 11 14 7 12 15
Think I'd be better with point buy XD
Ability scores: 8 10 15 6 14 16
Yeah no, point-buy XD
Let me think of that. I'm thinking of just having his name unknown to Daphwise
Don’t know how it says I have 13 hit points… with a CON modifier of +1 and being a rogue, it should be 9, right? By the way my stats are:
STR 12 DEX 19 CON 12 INT 14 WIS 12 CHA 12
If this is too good I can roll a new character.
(just fixed the hit points)
Also, what is the schedule for the sessions?
I'm usually available periodically throughout the day on Pacific Time in the US, and then I have more availability most evenings past 5 PM PT.
Since this is play-by-post, I was under the impression it would be a reply as we can sort of deal.
Unless everyone wants a more structured time frame to play.

I think we have a good amount of people now!
I have 6 character sheets so far out of 8.
Apophis2000 and cyberminger, you're welcome to still join. I just need your character sheets.
I will adjust encounters accordingly if necessary. :)
If everyone wants to set up a schedule for play, we can. Or we can post when we are able.
Let me know what y'all would prefer.
I'm usually working from 9 AM - 5 PM Pacific time, however I can respond periodically throughout the day.
My free time is usually Tuesdays 5 PM - 7 PM and 8 PM - 10 PM, Friday 5 PM - 8 PM, Saturday all day, and Sunday any time before 3 PM.
