"This is just to put on a bit of a show, Sleet," Caine says quietly. "We're looking to attract others. Others who maybe have a little more coin in their purse than we do."
Over the course of a couple of rounds, Caine is loud and boisterous and moves little stacks of gold coins around the table, making it look like Sleet has been a big winner then Nelyna, and that he and Jim seem particularly bad players all in an effort to attract patrons who might want in on a 'sure thing'.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Jim helps Caine in his efforts to attract other patrons from the bar. He acts over enthusiastically when he makes little wins, but even more dramatic when he loses. He pretends to be completely new to the card game asking dumb questions and showing his cards around the table. Anything to make him and Caine look like amateurs and to grab as much attention from the other patrons.
(Performance: 9 Just in case.)

"Sure, sure," Caine says with a smile. "The more the merrier."
While Caine shuffles, he eyes the old man carefully. Does he look like he can afford to lose a platinum piece? And on the other hand, does he look like he's coming to the table to swindle the party?
(Good question - have been trying to think of what they can do as a card game with dice. Maybe something called "Fates" - essentially a quick blackjack with the goal to get to 20 by rolling d10s, could raise a bet after the first 2 dice, and decide if roll any more dice after?).

Caine looks at the old man and smiles back. He either just wants the company, or he's the one set on cleaning this table out, Caine thinks to himself.
"Are you from Daggerford originally?" Caine asks the old man as he tosses two gold coins on to the table to ante.
He nods at the second coin and laughs at Jim, "I'll spot your ante. Our friend here has clearly come to play. Take the silver back."
Cards: 15
Caine lifts up the corner of his cards to see what's there and smiles.
@DM
Do you have any thoughts on how proficiency in cards could be used in this game? Caine has proficiency in card sets from his Criminal background. Would it be too much on the third card to let the proficiency bonus increase or decrease the number by 2 if he chooses a third card?
And if Caine and Jim try using Thieves' Cant to tell each other their cards so they increase the odds of knowing which cards are left in the deck, could that work like advantage? Say rolling two dice for one card and picking the number we want?
Really overthinking a distraction bit of role playing here. But hey maybe they can con Strahd later if they practice now.

@Cain
Jim drops a gesture in his movements that you recognise as an affirmative action.
Jim picks up his ale before quickly following Caine and placing himself on the side of the table directly opposite Caine.
He then turns to Sleet, "Come on, it's just a bit of fun."

"OK deal me in or whatever is required."
Caine rapidly deals out the cards.

Deception? w/ Jim's help for advantage?: 23
"all for little old me?!?! Papa needs a new red cap! Does anyone else want in on this action? If I win anymore, the tax man will be after me!"

(OOC Should have only been a +2 modifier there)
"hmm, ye old I'm just an old duffer garden gnome trick it appears, platinum piece indeed."
Jim greets the man as he approaches and joins the table. He also notices that Caine looks concerned.
However, Jim shrugs his shoulders and begins to deal out the cards. Although as he does so, he attempts some careful manipulation of the cards.

"Here is my one gold piece."

Jim smiles sheepishly, "I haven't got much left, but I do have this silver coin. That's got to be worth something right?"
