UPDATE: Im still trying to pick several characters, the party will be selected on Sunday. Id like to get a full, well rounded party (No one seems to be intelligence based and that can be important in this campaign)
For the past several days, the talk of the streets and taverns has all been about the so-called death curse: a wasting disease afflicting everyone who's ever been raised from the dead. Victims grow thinner and weaker each day, slowly but steadily sliding toward the death they once denied . When they finally succumb, they can't be raised-and neither can anyone else, regardless of whether they've ever received that miracle in the past. Temples and scholars of divine magic are at a loss to explain a curse that has affected the entire region, and possibly the entire world.
Hi there! I'm looking to start up a long term play by post game in the Faerun setting. I'm fairly new to dming but a long time player and I am very familiar with this campaign.
This campaign typically goes from 1st to 11th level, but modified could go to last a little longer if the players are invested and want to continue. I'm open to any kind of homebrew/AL content (Ebberon, Ravnica, Theros, Ravenloft, Critical Role, etc are all allowed even if not normally present in this setting), whatever you think might make the game more fun. Just would like to have it run by me first to make sure it's not overpowered or would hurt the other player's experiences in the game. Be conscientious of others please! I will pick ~6 players once there is a decent amount of applications.
I prefer to use Discord, so that there can be more space and easy access to files and such, if you don't have access to all the playable content you want to use online (majority of my dnd stuff is physical), then just fill out a blank character sheet like this one. Roll 20 will also probably utilized at some point, most likely just for the maps and info cards.
Applications should include: -How much dnd experience you have -Why you think I should pick you to join the campaign -A brief summary of your character (class and race, maybe alignment) (No sheet needed yet, we can flesh out characters when chosen) -A brief backstory for your character, and motives for wanting to stop the Soulmonger -What is your favorite animal?
Feel free to ask any questions or for more specifics! (Please don't reply if you have played or read this campaign before)
A year and a half of 5e, but used to play 3rd edition too.
-Why you think I should pick you to join the campaign
Really enjoy character development and interaction. Like a mystery adventure. Enjoy PbP format. Am happy to make the commitment to a long running game. Never played or read Tomb of Annihilation before but heard it is very good.
-A brief summary of your character (class and race, maybe alignment) (No sheet needed yet, we can flesh out characters when chosen)
Cleric (Order Domain), Protecter Aasimar, Investigator, Lawful (Good or Neutral)
-A brief backstory for your character, and motives for wanting to stop the Soulmonger
Not the typical path to becoming a cleric, he was an investigator for hire in a city who became disillusioned with all the crime and corruption and turned to Tyr as a means of bringing Order to the chaos. As a cleric of order, protector Aasimar (he is not aware of this yet) and an investigator his natural instinct is to stop the Soulmonger
I have only 2 years of experience, but I've played a lot in those two years.
-Why I think I should join the campaign
Have the time for a commitment for a long campaign (I'll mostly be active in the afternoons), I enjoy PbP and I will stay committed, and let you all know if I will be offline for a day or more.
-Brief character summary
Fairy/Sorcerer (Shadow Magic)/Chaotic good
-Brief backstory
Elora is a very curious being, and she ended up wandering the Feywild. When she returned, she decided she'd go adventuring. She's not necessarily all the way good, but she does like helping people. Her curiosity eventually led her to the Soulmonger, and she decided to try and stop the Soulmonger.
Why I should be picked: I don't go inactive for long, and I'd like to think I'm a fairly good RPer. Also, I know absolutely nothing about ToA.
Character summary: Half-orc wild magic sorcerer, neutral or chaotic good
Brief backstory: Sutha Zar'igoth was born into a traveling orcish clan. The result of a night her mother spent with a passing traveler, her human blood would normally prompt much of the clan to underestimate her--but given the gift for magic she displayed even at a young age, they weren't stupid enough to do that. As she grew, her arcane talent increased, and it was found that sometimes, strange things happened when she did her magic. Orcs aren't often knowledgeable about the full capabilities of wild magic, though, and Sutha's magic was helpful more often than not, so they simply accepted it and moved on.
This would prove to be a bad idea, though, when one day she was sparring with a clanmate. No weapons, just unarmed. She decided to have a little fun, though, and when her opponent was about to land a hit on her, she cast a shielding spell. Unfortunately for Sutha, this was the moment when she had a surge of wild magic, and a worse one than she'd ever had. Suddenly she was surrounded by fire, the two of them and several bystanders were engulfed in it--including her own mother--and when all was said and done she was the only one caught in the spell who was still breathing.
The clan didn't spend much time in cities, but they made an exception for this. They packed their stuff, went directly for the nearest big city, and found a priest willing to resurrect the ones lost. Once that was done, it was agreed that Sutha had to remain there--she couldn't stay with the clan, not with how dangerous she clearly was. Though heartbroken, Sutha was still too consumed by guilt to find it in herself to argue. It's been several months since then--she's been traveling, trying to not think about what happened, and hoping against hope that maybe she can find some way to control her seemingly uncontrollable magic. But when this disease showed up, she knew something had to be done--for her clanmates, her mother, if nothing else.
-Why do you think I should pick you to join the campaign: I'm an experienced PBP player who can constantly post reactions. I never played Tomb of Annihilation before and am really looking forward to participating in it. Also I'm a good team player too.
A brief summary of your character (class and race, maybe alignment) :Zerg is a variant human paladin. His alignment is Chaotic Natural.
A brief backstory for your character, and motives for wanting to stop the Soulmonger
Born as the son of a warrior, raised as a ruthless fighter, like a flower growing from its own seed, Zerg naturally became a bloodthirsty battle freak. When the Death curse started eating the elders and champions of his tribe, Zerg felt no fear but only excitement. For Zerg himself doesn't know there are dragon blood runs in his veins. Urging by the beast inside him, Zerg headed to the source of the curse to find gold to root and enemies tocrush!
-How much dnd experience you have: I have been playing DnD for about 5 years+ and been DMing for most of that time.
Why you think I should pick you to join the campaign: I think you should pick myself because I am an excellent role player (trained actor here) and I am a team player. My main goal in any campaign is to have fun.
A brief summary of your character (class and race, maybe alignment) (No sheet needed yet, we can flesh out characters when chosen): I have several character ideas in mind. I do have a water genasi warlock that Ive been wanting to play. He is Neutral. The idea is he is a sailor with his marid mom as his patron. He is looking or his father who was reportedly lost at sea.
-A brief backstory for your character, and motives for wanting to stop the Soulmonger : As stated above, his father was reportedly lost at sea. He never knew his parents until he left the boys home at 15 to become a deck hand. He worked as an apprentice to the ships navigator and chef. Eventually he became a decent chef and good navigator by the time he was 18. Hes 21 now. He learned about his parents through his genie patron which is his mom. When he left the boy home, he was given a perfume bottle he was found with. He would want to destroy the Soulmonger to increase his chances of finding his father alive and well.
What is your favorite animal?: Personally: Owl, Character: Blue Peregrine Falcon
How much dnd experience you have: About 5 years, DMing and playing, all of my DMing has been homebrew though Why you think I should pick you to join the campaign: no real reason, I'm as good as anyone else who just likes having fun in a game :) A brief summary of your character (class and race, maybe alignment) (No sheet needed yet, we can flesh out characters when chosen)
So I have two ideas, both sort of similar. One is a barbarian that eventually gets some a paladin levels, depending how far we get. I'm thinking like a shield maiden with a spear, a pagan warrior who seeks glory from slaying whatever the cause of this plague is.
The second is an elderly archer of the clergy, not sure about the Faerun pantheon. Sent here as his place to die and he is very aware of it, so he is going to try his damnest to complete his divine task. This gentleman would be a fighter with some cleric spells that i plan to get from feats, but a divine theme can be present nonetheless
-A brief backstory for your character, and motives for wanting to stop the Soulmonger
Been DMing since July of 2020, and been in love with the game since I was 13. 9 years ago
Why Should You Pick Me?
Priority number one is to always make sure everyone is having a good, safe, fun time.
A Reborn Fighter (who will eventually take levels in Undead Warlock), True Neutral and to be shaped by the story progression (There's more to this, but I like secrets)
Waking up in the dirt was by no means pleasant. Feeling Hollow. That was all he could describe it as. He could feel a longing urge to push himself upwards. So he did. Above where his head was lain to rest, Hollow found a sheathed longsword and shield fashioned into a makeshift headstone. They looked to only have been there for a few months. No matter. Hollow wanted his memories back. He will find them. (presumably, soul monger has part of Hollow's soul that contains his memories)
How much dnd experience you have: I played AD&D for five or six years, then hadn't played again until about 1 1/2 ago when I started playing again (mostly via PBP)
Why you think I should pick you to join the campaign: I'm a reliable poster and don't ghost threads. I've been playing in one thread since July of 2020 and DM'ing a second thread that started in September of 2020.I try to avoid the one sentence post (in combat, it is not always easy to avoid) and make an effort to post something that gives the other PCs and the DMs something to play off of.
A brief summary of your character (class and race, maybe alignment): Norwin Festrith, Firbolg druid, neutral good
A brief backstory for your character, and motives for wanting to stop the Soulmonger : Norwin was raised in the forest among his people, gaining druidic training. As he neared his majority, Norwin began to have dreams about the Soulmonger disease. In his dreams, the disease destroyed his forest and his tribe, unless he did something. When awaking in the morning, the firbolg was never sure what he needed to do to stop the disease. After consulting with his village elders, they agreed that he needed to head to its source and try to stop it.
I’ve been playing 5e for several years, DMing for three (I think, I lose track), and I’ve used discord (limited dice stuff, I just prefer it for the more organic posting quality), and some roll20 experience.
I’d like to play? I dunno, I’m throwing my hat in the ring, but you should choose people with character concepts that fit your world and personalities that aren’t going to fight.
I’m aiming to make a ranger with an aim to become a swarm keeper. I’d like him to be a collector of tiny twig blight spirits, who seems happy to go exploring in the jungle more than anything else. I’m flexible on the race, but I’m thinking a ghost wise halfling? I think it’d be fun to play a quiet little man who finds alternate ways to talk to people, like by giving them meaningful plants, or drawing pictures for how he feels. Or by using a single word to try to sum up his whole thought.
His little spirits are his motive for stopping the soul monger. They are spirits of nature, and suffer for its influence. The spirits are turning darker, against their nature. He needs to purify them.
I’m not sure I have a favorite animal. I like cats and dogs. Big or small. No birds.
-D&D Experience: I have played and DMed 5e for about 3 years, I’ve also played a couple other systems like Starfinder and CoC
-Why I should be picked: I’d like to think I’m a fairly good RPer and although I haven’t done DnD pbp before I have played other pbp games and I’m very consistent with them.
-Character summary: High Elf Artificer probably LN or LG
-Backstory and Motivation: Aeon grew up in a small backwater town in Faerun and was raised by his father and taught the various magic and smithing of artifice. His parents were both smiths and lived most of their lives working in the town for its various denizens. As they grew older they decided they wanted a child, unfortunately Aeon appeared to be a stillborn and his mother died upon delivery. In his grief his father prayed to any god that would listen to grant him the power to revive them. Whether in an act of divine intervention or simply Aeon’s father mustering his magical talents Aeon awoke and lived. Years later when news reached his town of the disease and who it affected his father appeared horrified but wouldn’t tell Aeon anything. So Aeon doesn’t know exactly why the disease is such a problem for him, but from what he picked up from his father he knew it had to be stopped.
How much dnd experience you have: Ive been playing for about 3 years now almost all PBP, Ive been DM'ing for almost as long
Why you think I should pick you to join the campaign: I love having fun and Ive never played Tomb of Annihilation
A brief summary of your character (class and race, maybe alignment) (No sheet needed yet, we can flesh out characters when chosen): I have a F forest gnome artificer that will be going Battle Smith. She is def good alignment, just not sure which side of that she falls on
A brief backstory for your character, and motives for wanting to stop the Soulmonger: She will probably be someone that most people are familiar with, always tinkering and building things. She has a good understanding of the world and how things work. (Not gonna lie had to look up what the soulmonger was) Once she learns what the soul monger is she will want to not only stop such an evil creation but will desperately want to know how it works.
What is your favorite animal? I am not sure I have a favorite animal.
Ooh this sounds really interesting. I'll need to think of a character
How much dnd experience you have - i just started. Currently playing in 2 campaigns on here and an in person one with my friends Why you think I should pick you to join the campaign - I really enjoy the way playbypost plays with the ability to write out fun descriptions of things. I post at least once a day unless I let folks know ahead of time. A brief summary of your character - I was thinking of a halfling graviturgy wizard or a Goliath ranged bloodhunter (ghost or mutant) A brief backstory for your character, and motives for wanting to stop the Soulmonger - wip What is your favorite animal? - dragons. Wait real animals? Probably crocodiles or alligators. They hit peak evolution 200 million years ago.
How much dnd experience you have? 32 years -Why you think I should pick you to join the campaign? I'm a dedicated roleplayer who brings a blend of serious immersion slashed with wacky humor. -A brief summary of your character (class and race, maybe alignment) (No sheet needed yet, we can flesh out characters when chosen)
Hapax Legomenon, Gnome Artificier, possibly multi with Warlock, TN or CG, CLoistered scholar.
-A brief backstory for your character, and motives for wanting to stop the Soulmonger
Grown up in a library, magical engineer and seeker of forbidden knowledge, Head librarian was raised once after an attack on the library, now wasting disease has him. Hapax thinks of him like a father. Hapax has been on the verge of an astronomical breakthrough which unknown to him will give him contact with a great old one.
-What is your favorite animal? Owlbear Wait real animals? Owlbear.
-How much dnd experience you have: I'm in my 11th year playing and DMing (am currently DMing one PBP campaign on here and playing in another). -Why you think I should pick you to join the campaign: I've got a lot of experience with different systems, I'm friendly, enjoy thinking of solutions to problems, and I try to be both involved and generous with RP. -A brief summary of your character (class and race, maybe alignment) (No sheet needed yet, we can flesh out characters when chosen) Half-orc wizard (either Divination or Evocation, whatever would be the best fit), neutral good -A brief backstory for your character, and motives for wanting to stop the Soulmonger: Alqar Soulsmasher grew up with his orc mother in a clan stronghold but developed the equivalent of polio as a child, which stunted his physical growth. After being cast out of the stronghold (which really hasn't caused any lasting trauma at all--nope, none), he found his way to the tower of an elf wizard, who took him in as an apprentice (and surrogate parent). Alqar found himself in the books and arcane scrolls his teacher had. He always felt like the writers of the books were speaking to him directly. He developed his magical prowess enough to begin dreaming of going out to adventure in order to develop his magical talents, find secrets, and eventually build a tower and take students of his own. But the #1 priority? Find books. As many books as he can get his hands on. And then use Mage Hand to carry more books.
But his curiosity continued to grow. What could magic not do? Well for one thing, it couldn't heal his stunted right leg. For another, it couldn't give Alqar the answers to the question of why he developed his disease in the first place. Now, Alqar's teacher, a former adventurer, has been brought back from the dead a few times and now has the Wasting Disease. Alqar's existential questions have developed a sense of urgency due to his teacher's illness, and he's sure there must be a book with the right answer somewhere. Right? -What is your favorite animal? Squirrels!
Greetings, I have been playing D&D for decades; tabletop, email and PbP, been on DnD Beyond for about 2 years and on Discord about the same.
As to why I should be invited to participate in your game: I am a reliable poster, prefer Discord as that is accessible at work. I write well and like developing characters according to their whims - I do like action and the 'rewards' it brings (most of my characters turn in the expropriation direction); love playing characters that think they are devious and cunning, and they mostly seem to be able to carry it off.
As a character I have been working with the idea of a composite creature that results from a necromancer's experiments gone horribly awry (for the necromancer); it will combine the abilities of a necromancer and a thief; a creature who is not pretty to look upon but, it doesn't care about looks, only results. Intelligent? Most definitely. Devious? Absolutely. And, because it was 'created' by an manipulator of the dead, this creature as an urgent compulsion to destroy the Soulmonger, which threatens it's very existence. So destroying this threat has become one of it's major motivations.
Favorite animal? Raven, Odin's bird.

Panic is a mechanism that strengthens the gene pool.
How much D&D experience do you have? While I played earlier editions in my youth, I've about 5 years experience both playing and DMing in 5th edition. Why you think I should pick you to join the campaign? I am a consistent poster, keeping up with the flow of the game while not trying to dominate posts. I am a knowledgeable, veteran player. An editor and writer by trade, spelling and grammar are kind of my jam. I'm easy-going and willing to adapt to any style of play the party chooses. A brief summary of your character (class and race, maybe alignment): Human variant, fighter, chaotic good A brief backstory for your character, and motives for wanting to stop the Soulmonger:As Raastin Rolfwann's journey stretched from youth to young man, his life could not have been at a better place. Bright, inquisitive and having shown a natural knack for the arcane arts, Raastin rose from the ranks of simple shopkeepers' son to the envy of his peers, having earned a prestigious apprenticeship with Lavreaugh Tal'dinnith, noted mage, scholar and diplomat. Even though the mage was eccentric, prone to violent outbursts and notoriously impatient, Raastin quickly seemed to gain the respect and trust of the man. So it came as little surprise when the elder mage entrusted his promising apprentice with accompanying a guarded wagon on a journey that would skirt The Fallen Lands en route to Elvenport to deliver an artifact to a fellow mage. Though any trip so close to those cursed lands carried some degree of danger, this journey was expected to quick and easy. All did not go as planned, though, when the caravan was ambushed by dark denizens outside of the Eastwood. Fleeing for his life with the artifact and what few guards remained, Raastin led his small party deeper into the woods hoping to escape. Dogged for hours by pursuit, the young man's heroics were for not when the dark denizens captured him not far from the Triangle of Trees. Loyal to the end, Raastin tried to fend off the assailants from taking the artifact, clutching it tightly to him as he continued to keep them at an arms length. His life appeared forfeit, but instead, the leader of those dark denizens simply took by force the artifact...clutching hand and all. Left bleeding out to die, a delirious Raastin made his way to civilization, where he was nursed back to health and returned in shame to Tal'dinnith's tower..****y to find it razed to the ground. The once aspiring apprentice found himself now shunned by his peers and others. No respectable mage would take on the cursed, one-handed man. A rage grew in the young man, driven by a need learn what had happened to his mentor -- and fueled by a thirst for vengeance on those who had done it. Raastin took up the blade, looking to find those answers only to hear rumors of dark dealings and a wasting sickness to the south. A festering plaque that sounded a good place to seek out dark denizens. What is your favorite animal? The dog lives for the day, the hour, the moment. We should all strive to live like a dog.

I like Turtles. (I know the meme, but it's true)
What is your favorite animal?
No birds.
Paladin - warforged - orange
-Favorite Animal: Got to be wolves
Currently playing in 2 campaigns on here and an in person one with my friends
Why you think I should pick you to join the campaign - I really enjoy the way playbypost plays with the ability to write out fun descriptions of things. I post at least once a day unless I let folks know ahead of time.
A brief summary of your character - I was thinking of a halfling graviturgy wizard or a Goliath ranged bloodhunter (ghost or mutant)
A brief backstory for your character, and motives for wanting to stop the Soulmonger - wip
What is your favorite animal? - dragons. Wait real animals? Probably crocodiles or alligators. They hit peak evolution 200 million years ago.
How much dnd experience you have? 32 years
-Why you think I should pick you to join the campaign?
Owlbear.
Liarin: Against the Cult of the Reptile God
Adewild: Shadows and Light 2
Brother Thaddeus: Rime of the Frostmaiden.
-A brief summary of your character (class and race, maybe alignment) (No sheet needed yet, we can flesh out characters when chosen) Half-orc wizard (either Divination or Evocation, whatever would be the best fit), neutral good
-A brief backstory for your character, and motives for wanting to stop the Soulmonger: Alqar Soulsmasher grew up with his orc mother in a clan stronghold but developed the equivalent of polio as a child, which stunted his physical growth.
Squirrels!
DM: In the Shadow of the Mountains: Lost Mine of Phandelver
A brief summary of your character (class and race, maybe alignment): Human variant, fighter, chaotic good
A brief backstory for your character, and motives for wanting to stop the Soulmonger: As Raastin Rolfwann's journey stretched from youth to young man, his life could not have been at a better place.
