"Pterafolk, big winged guys with really long noses? How are we supposed to get up on Firefinger with those at our backs?" Sarya asks, sounding a bit skeptical now.
Rawlings turns to Sarya, "Why, we ride them, don't ya know? Give them a little jerky and they're your best friend. Great way to get to the top!" she turns to Carlos, "Right Carlos?"
"Thanks Azaka, perhaps me and my associates should confer a bit before proceeding. I think we will be able to give you our decision on whether to hire you and to help you out with your quest within long." Sarya says and gives Azaka a nod.
"I understand," replies Azaka. "Such a decision carries many consequences. You can find me here; otherwise, check with Karam--the barkeeper--he will know where to find me."
Sarya gives Azaka another nod as she leaves and turns to the others. "So, we're taking her as our guide right, and I suggest we start off with helping her with her quest before visiting that oracle. We need to buy 2 canoes which will cost us 100 gold which is 20 gold each right?" I can go and get them as soon as we have settled our business with Azaka. I need some help to carry them though. We should be ready to get going tomorrow morning right, after one last night in civilization." She finishes with a smirk. "Anyone has anything to add before we talk to Azaka again?"
“Well. She doesn’t seem to be much fun, but I guess she’ll do.” Rawlings looks a bit disappointed. “Harq, Carlos, T? What do you boys think? And why don’t we just get the canoes in the morning and just head off from there? Then you don’t have to take the canoes anywhere or store them.” Rawlings sees that Sarya isn’t drinking the local Tej, and honestly she’s a bit sick of it, so she asks the barmaid for what Sarya is having.
Thoradin shrugged. "Fine by me, and I would agree with getting the canoes tomorrow - unless we're planning to leave early, before the seller's around. Personally I think if we're staying for the night we may as well stay long enough to buy them tomorrow, then leave."
"Tomorrow would be good for buying them."Harq nods in agreement. He then adds, "Though I would have to actually walk for a bit, I believe I could put my broom under one to float it to the river. No need in straining ourselves too much before we even start."
"So, it seems we hire Azaka and buy the canoes tomorrow morning before leaving with her for her quest then. Sounds good." Sarya says and smiles, leaning back in her chair, taking another sip of her ale."Do we have the afternoon and night off then? I can inform Azaka of our decision, unless anyone had anything to add." She says looking over att Carlos.
(Advancing the story under the assumptions that (1) Carlos is on board with hiring Azaka Stormfang as the party's guide, (2) Azaka has been informed of this and has explained where to meet her the next day, and (3) the purchase of two canoes will take place. Let me know if we need to fill in anything that your characters may have wanted to accomplish before all of the following occurs)
The party's first day in Chult has proven to be a full one, and everyone welcomes a relatively peaceful night of rest at The Monkey's Fist. Of course, there's plenty of lighthearted conversation, good music, and satisfactory food and drink to help you pass the afternoon and evening hours.
After settling your bill the next morning, you make your way to the Red Bazaar to procure the last bit of equipment for your journey into the jungle. The precipitation is a bit heavier today, and rather than a steady mist, Port Nyanzaru is saturated with light rain. The locals, of course, pay it no heed. The canoe vendor is elated with the sale of two boats and, as a result, offers to have them delivered to a place of your choice. Per your last conversation with Azaka last night, you know to meet her along the banks of the Tiryki where it meets the Bay of Chult. This proves to be a walk of approximately twenty minutes, and you're happy to have the help of four young Chultans who ferry the canoes along the path behind you.
Azaka greets you each of you, thanks the four youths for their assistance, and immediately sets herself to the business at hand. "Friends, how do you wish to divide ourselves between the canoes?"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Sasha would discuss terms with Azaka before rejoining her friends for a long night of drinking and singing. She would get up early and take a morning bath at the temple of Sune, getting new braids and flowers in her hair before rejoining the others for breakfast at the Monkey's Fist. Then off to the Red Bazaar to buy canoes. Persuasion with help from someone to haggle: 20
"Greetings Azaka, off into the chultan jungle then." Sarya says with a wide smile, her red hair braided and flowery. (No strong preferences on how we divide ourselves between the canoes but maybe the flyers in one canoe and non-flyers in the other.) (Also, how much food did Azaka tell us to bring? That would be bought at the Red Bazaar.)
Harq hands 20g pieces to Sasha in the morning for the canoe purchase and then sighs at his, now nearly empty coin purse. In the morning he too takes some time to freshen up, knowing that they he'll be back on the road again and not likely have a proper bath for a while. He double checks camping gear, including the rain catcher and bug salve, again, glad that he bought more than enough.
As they head towards the water with the local youths he takes a few last looks around the city, sad that he needs to leave it so quickly after having arrived, and hopeful for his return, though also excited to be back out looking for ancient temples or treasures. As the youths drop off the canoes he gives each a silver piece as a thank you before sending them on their way.
When asked about the seating arrangements he says simply, "I'm small so happy to sit anywhere. Though I would like to sit with you, Azaka, so that I may learn more of the flora and fauna we see while we go if possible."
Rawlings enjoys their walk through the jungle as the heat doesn't bother her and the anticipation of what they might find always excites her. She worries how long this side mission is going to take, but knows it is a necessity. She hands Sarya the 20 gold and thanks her for arranging their passage. Gets in the canoe and readies herself for their voyage over water.
Carlos faces the first and formidable foe of Chult jungle. The heat and humidity! The climate of the jungle isn't kind for someone who wears armor and shields. But even soaking with sweat, Carlos has no intent to take his armor off. Not with that giant bug flying around his head. The creature had numerous black spikes and a 3 inch long needle. It's menacing look makes the cleric doubts that the thing has just popped out from the ninth hell. The bug stares at Carlos as if it's in deep love with him then after a few minutes flying away. " Phew! Now I know why everyone in this country recommend us Insect repellent! " The young man breathes sign of relief. " Though I miss my golds. But I'm glad we have canoes now. Goddess only knows what kind of monstrosity awaiting us in the jungle."
