"Hm, a dead end, this can't be right." Sarya mutters and starts to check the wall at the end of the corridor for a secret door or something. Investigation: 19
Rawlings heads in and see Sarya investigating the dead end. Not wanting another fight, she agrees to stay away from B and decides to check out the sole door on the left (A). Investigation:19
Unable to satisfy his own curiosity about the sound, while the others look at the dead end or the first door, Harq heads to door #2 and stops to listen for a second to the banging. He then looks up to Duncan on his shoulder who blinks and then disappears, as Harqs eyes go white, only to reappear just a few seconds later. Harq then tells the others what he saw behind door #2 through his familiar's eyes. ((owl perception 18))
Saryatakes a minute or so to scrutinize the wall at the end of the passageway; in the end, he's confident there's no other way in or out of this dungeon area. Likewise, Rawlings deduces nothing out of the ordinary about the cell door on the southern side of the dungeon; it's a straightforward iron door lacking windows.
Harq and Duncan, meanwhile, work in tandem to find out what's making the noise in cell B...
For Harq
Within the cell are ten severed hands crawling about. Every now and then one of them forms a fist and pounds on the cell door.
Harq shivers and says, "Well... you were right about the minion behind the door. Though it seems to be just parts... and not the whole minion."He then explains in more detail what he saw, adding, "Should we check these other doors as well?"
((if the others want, Harq can quickly pop Duncan through each of the doors as he just did to check what is behind them, else he'll have Duncan fly through the previous room towards the west to scout ahead, since he really doesn't want any more skeletal surprises - owl perception for whichever action the group decides: 23))
“This owl of yours, Duncan you say? Impressive creature. So he can pop into another room by you and the pop back? What kind of magic is this? And yes, if you’re willing, sure keeps us from breaking down a lot of doors.” She turns to Sarya,“I know we have a mission and I agree, but lets check and then head back where we were and start down a tunnel. You’re right, we have a job to do.” She then sets her jaw, looks upon Harq, and waits.
While others are committing their own investigation, Carlos uses ritual magic to cast Detect Magic. " My dad was a retired adventurer. And he said, when you reach the dead end , you should always doubt… magic. "
Detect Magic
For the duration, you sense the presence of magic within 30 feet of you. If you sense magic in this way, you can use your action to see a faint aura around any visible creature or object in the area that bears magic, and you learn its school of magic, if any.
The spell can penetrate most barriers, but it is blocked by 1 foot of stone, 1 inch of common metal, a thin sheet of lead, or 3 feet of wood or dirt.
@Harq
Carlos sighs and pads the wizard's shoulder. " Well done my friend. That's a creative way to use familiar spell. Check the other cells please. Let's pray we can find something alive behind these doors."
Meanwhile Thoradin keeps watch for any more enemies. At the same time he says to Rawlings in a low voice to avoid alerting any enemies who might hear them. "We got surprised back there and that's not good. I'm at the front specifically so I can take on any enemies we encounter, but we also need someone to cover our back. Can you please hang back and keep a watch out for more nasties?"
Rawlings glares at Thoradin at his request. After a moments pause, she moves over closer to the door they came from and watches from the back. Doesn’t say a word but understands.
Harq and Duncan continue their investigative process of the cells, which reveals the following...
Cell A contains clean humanoid bones, and purple crystals litter the floor of this cell. A large number of spiders can be seen in various locations in the cell
Cell B contains the ten severed hands that are crawling about.
Within cell C is the rotting corpse of a male tiefling that dons ruined leather armor. He or she was chained up and forgotten long ago. The body wears a silver chain around its neck that bears a gold holy symbol of Asmodeus.
Cell D is empty, save for a set of manacles and bloodstains on the floor
Within cell E is a pseudodragon. Upon seeing Duncan, the creature immediately begins to stir and claws frantically at the door.
For Harq
As the pseudodragon stirs it begins to communicate telepathically with Harq/Duncan. It doesn't do so with words per se, but with images and feelings. The image it sends is of itself being thrown into the cell by a terrifying-looking human female that you surmise to be the Duchess of Rot. The image is fraught with a mixture of feelings: anger, loneliness. and sorrow.
Assuming the overall feeling that Harq/Duncan get from the dragon in E are not threatening, Harq will send Duncan back into the cell to coo and flutter at the dragon in comforting animal noises. He then tells the others everything he saw in A through D, adding, "There is a live creature behind this door. It seems trapped. Sarya, can you open this door? I know time is important, but we shouldn't leave the poor thing in there to die."Harq definitely sounds worried about the dragon behind the door, and is willing to do what is necessary to help ((forest gnomes like small creatures after all ~)), and is currently focused more on this than on the mission and hand. He then reaches into his pack and riffles around to find some snacks to give to the dragon once it is free, watching as the others open the door.
Carlos adding guidance would be nice too ;) I'm not sure if I can 'help' picking the lock or not though... :(
" At least we can save one innocent soul. That's not bad, even though it's a little critter…" Carlos will be happy to give his Guidance, if Sarya tries to open the door. Also…
@Everyone
Carlos will cast the spell to anyone in the party when they make a skill check. You can add 1D4 to your roll without my permission. But please remember that he can only bless one person at once.
"Yes Harq, I agree, we should try to free that creature." Sarya says and nods. "I'll see what I can do." She adds and nods at Carlos as he gives her a guiding touch before she crouches by the last cell door (E) and uses her slender tools to try to pick the lock.
Saryamanipulates the lock mechanism to open in a matter of seconds and out walks the pseudodragon. The creature moves cautiously and eyes each of the party members with mild suspicion briefly. Eventually, a rasping purr can be heard coming from the tiny dragon's throat, a sound you interpret to be an indication of gratitude or contentment.
Harq carefully takes a couple steps towards it and says, “It’s ok. We’ll help you get out of here.” As he hands it some snacks from his rations. “Though we have to go in a bit more to find something first. Stay with me in the back and we should be safe until we’re ready to go.”
"Hey, you're a cute one." Sarya says smiling and tries to befriend the pseudodragon by kneeling down and offering it some of her rations, trying both some dried meat and a sweet bisquit as she has absolutely no idea what a tiny dragon would go for. Persuasion: 16 Rolled with advantage if helped by offered treats, otherwise go with first roll.
The pseudodragon snaps up any meat that is offered, first from Harq and then from Sarya, and after gulping down the food the creature sits on its haunches and gazes at each party member one by one. Whenever the gaze falls upon someone, that person immediately has an image of a withered, cruel-faced woman pressed upon his or her mind.
”Maybe this creature with its powers to show us his memories, might know where the item is?” Rawlings considers out loud. “Anyone have an idea how to communicate with it?”
