The gnome gives a big happy grin hearing all that.
"I'm glad to hear it! I admit, I really wasn't sure if it'd be much help to have a single conversation like this, tutorship was of course out of the question... But it does seem you must have made a good impression, to see the gifts he has left you with!" he smiles while nodding, though turns a bit more grave for a moment.
"And right... I do feel like the old folk may have made some mistakes in his past. Or maybe it's just the fact wizards get eccentric in their old age. But by all accounts he does seem like a fine bloke."
"Ah! Danger, be nice and say hi to Vaduta, won't you? Vaduta, this is Danger. He's been watching us for a bit, and with the help of some delicious jerky, he is now a trusty companion of mine."
((Briefly debated just firing from ambush, but decided that might be a little too out of alignment for Randy, being Neutral Good and all. Oh, well. He still has the drop on them.))
Randy steps into the clear with the bow drawn back, but in a position he can quickly duck back into cover. He points it at the larger one, but is keeping a close eye on them both and the door to the blind.
"Let the fire be for now. Hands up where I can see them. I have questions for you folks. Like who are you and what are doing up here in an ambush position?"
If anyone makes a hostile move Randy will fire one shot at each of the two visible targets.
The younger fellow gives a yelp, and almost topples into the charring canvas, looking up at Randy with wide eyes. The older one looks at Randy, the drawn arrow, then back at the flames. "Got a friend inside, and I ain't lettin' the fire spread to the woods." He hunches his shoulders as if expecting an arrow between them, but continues to beat at the canvas.
"Don't shoot mister, you after gold? We got some... or food? You hungry?"
"Shut it!"
Coljin hustles forward, and while he sees a possible route up to where the smoke is coming from, it won't be without climbing.
((He's about 25 ft from the base of the rock, so could reach it and begin to climb with an Athletics check.))
Coljin hears a yelp and the low murmur of rapid conversation from above.
Dornikal points out the smoke to the rest of the caravan, and Whoopsie begins digging through his pack for... something, while the rest of them, with Coljin charging forward, set aside any play acting of wagon troubles and load and draw the bows and crossbows they used to take down their quarry the day before, eyes scanning the rocky ridgelines. Evar spurs his horse forward, extending an arm down for Dornikal if he'd like to swing up behind and regain ground on the gnome cleric that has dashed a hundred feet ahead.
"Is it okay if I give him something to eat too? He's so little!"
"Ohh! Was that him? Hi there, sorry, I didn't mean anything by calling you little, you are just smaller than me, but I'm sure very fierce by the pound..."
Ulmwin chuckles softly, scratching Danger under his chin. "What do you think Danger? Some more treats? And of course he's fierce. He is, after all, the Danger," Ulmwin says with all the smugness someone can excuse while telling an in joke nobody else gets.

"Just answer my questions and don't do anything that we'll regret later." Randy allows the older man to continue working on the fire while keeping them covered.
Danger exudes a sense of triumph and hunger, but less of a famished hunger and more of a curious hunger.
Vaduta pulls out a waxed linen parcel, and pulls out a bit of a pastry sticky with honey. She breaks some off and extends it to Danger, raising the packet in offering to Ulmwin as well. The little pseudodragon extends his neck, delicately nibbling at the pastry and giving a purr of pleasure, little clawed hands reaching out and gently grasping her arm as he crawls into the crook of her elbow and licks at the remnants of honey, giving a purring chirp when her fingers are clean.
She gives a delighted laugh.
"I'm Bimmfur, and this is Hank, and that's Garvey.", the halfling pipes up. The human continues beating at the flame, and gets it put out, with some flailing and scrambling coming from the inside as well, which resolves itself to be another human maybe a few years younger than Hank, who peers out with a sooty shovel in one hand and a shortsword in the other. Looking down Randy's arrow, he holds them out to the side, lowering the blade to the ground.

Randy nods approvingly. "Very good. Garvey, why don't you join the rest of us out here. I'm sure it will be less smokey. Go ahead and have a seat, gentlemen. We may be talking a while."
Randy looks pointedly at the halfling. "Bimmfur, you too. Sit." He looks all 3 over. "You may call me Mr. Buckthorn. So far, I've been willing to give you all the benefit of the doubt, despite suspicious circumstances. DON'T do anything to make me change my mind. I would find the results unpleasant. I guarantee that you would find it much worse. Now, perhaps you can tell me reason for your being here. And please, just the plain truth. Listening to someone lie tends to... irritate me."
Randy begins to wind up Planar Warrior with it's focus being Garvey.
Randy grins nastily and fully draws the bow fully back, pointing it at the smart aleck. That individual becomes the focus of PW (just in case it wasn't Garvey) "Want to re-think that answer, smart guy? "
"Well now, how am I supposed to beat that? I have to restock on my own sweets, so he's gonna be riding on your shoulder if I'm not careful!"
"Once we get back to the city though, I'll be sure to load up on a whole manner of things. We'll let you try some fruits, some meats, more sweets," he says, sharing vague mental sensations of each of those things "Before figuring out what you like most, yes?"
"Woah, woah woah!", Garvey exclaims, raising his hands.
"We were hunting mountain hens, I swear... just came across this rockslide area, and thought maybe we'd... hang around for a while... errr... see what opportunities came along..."
Danger sends Ulmwin a sense of reassurance, but also insistence that he follow through and provided an assortment of treats to try.

"Oh don't worry buddy, I wasn't actually thinking you were gonna abscond over just some pastries. But I do promise we'll try all those things regardless!" he says, allowing Danger to climb back on his shoulder before addressing Vaduta again.
"Ready to go catch up with the others? Our ride is probably going to be... A bit intense."
Randy grin looks a little more like a snarl now. "Tch! Just enough truth there possibly to keep me from ventilating you. But I feel like you're stretching it a bit thin..."
He glares at them down the length of the arrow. "If I were a caravan guard, I'd waste the lot of you. 'If a man's a problem, shoot him and he's no longer a problem' ".
Ulmwin will release the fly mount, and take lead up front, making Vaduta take the seat back... Or will simply borrow out the fly mount to her while he'll use his wings- Whatever seems to be the best to actually make this work. He will give the tiefling a few moments to let sink in just the "how" they are going to get back, however. Maybe he should have explained in full?
"...We can start with a practice flight or two just to make sure you're ready for the full trip."

Dornikal also passively notes the smoke and calls to those around him,
"Bit of smoke coming up over the ridge there. Not sure what that's about."
He'll point it out to them before adding,
"Could just be a distraction."
The gnome gives a big happy grin hearing all that.

"Let's start simple. What are your names?"

Dornikal takes the offered hand to catch up with the rest now everyone is ready for a fight at the caravan.
Randy nods approvingly. "Very good. Garvey, why don't you join the rest of us out here. I'm sure it will be less smokey. Go ahead and have a seat, gentlemen. We may be talking a while."
The two humans exchange a glance and a glower at Randy, but the halfling seems nervous.
The second human extracts himself from the charred blind, and the two of them squat.
Evar hauls Dornikal up behind, and they pound down the track after Coljin.

Bimmfur looks on the edge of panic, but is trying to take cues from his elders.
Danger sense a sense of satisfaction, as if pleased that Ulmwin is seeing sense.
