When Dora exits the cell, she sees that the sheriff is in the corridor speaking with Apprentice Cullen, who is looking somewhat flustered.
As Dora locks Pallo's cell, the sheriff says, "Tell her what you told me, Apprentice."
"I have to apologise for Apprentice Vidon," Basilly begins, "He had to leave on important business... I tried to convince him to tell the sheriff, but he was in a hurry... His behaviour is unusual, and I will bring it to the attention of Seeker Venn, the leader of our order."
[OOC: Dora's Passive Insight tells her that Basilly is not a good liar. He is clearly not telling the whole story.]

Tyrus Mountson: Lvl 3 Dwarvish Bard; Waterdeep Campaign (Dragon Heist) Nanoc the Younger: Semi-retired Lvl 2 Rogue / Level 2 Barbarian Human; The Knuckle, Mror Holds, Ebberon. The Honourable Jaden Fellan: Level 3 Human Eldritch Knight; Band of Sunswall
AKA: Phillip Berrie: writer, editor and academic thrillseeker—a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
[OOC: Dora already knows he is not telling them everything, so an Insight check won't be much help here. If you want to get him to reveal what he is not telling, you will need to roll a check for either Intimidation or Persuasion to get him to do so. You will find Dora's bonuses for these skill checks on her character sheet (she even has proficiency with Intimidation) and I am happy to use the above roll with the appropriate bonus. But you need to decide which you want to use and have her act appropriately as that will determine how the NPCs will react.
You can also choose to do neither and I will then decide how Basilly (and the sheriff) interprets Dora's words. If you choose to do this, I will use the above roll to possibly give you more information about his prevarication.]

[OOC I will add persuasion as well but I want to leave insight to evaluate his answer. (and I should have had +3 not +2). I will not use intimidation with Basilly.]
Pauses then adds "Basilly, if Vidon is in trouble and is out of his depth, surely the Sheriff can help if you tell us. On the other hand if there is any possibility he has committed crimes then your oaths compel you to inform us."
"What Handleader Wallus says is true," says the sheriff, adding his own voice to Dora's argument; he obviously didn't believe Basilly either.
[OOC: The sheriff is giving Dora Help, which means she gains Advantage on her roll. Therefore, please make the roll again and the highest result will apply. Note: Helping a character is something that can be done with most rolls provided it is possible in the circumstances, which is up to the referee. In normal play, this is used to give the character with the highest bonus Advantage on their roll.
Also, don't forget that Dora has one Hero Dice, which is a 1d6 roll that could be added to the highest result, if you think the extra points could make the difference.]
[OOC I think I will save my hero dice until I am in mortal danger.]
Persuasion
15
[OOC: This is a contested roll which Basilly, because he is intently prevaricating, gets a Wisdom Saving Throw against. Your Persuasion roll gives me the Difficulty Class of his Saving Throw (i.e., the number he has to match or exceed).
Basilly's Saving Throw:13
Basilly may be a bad liar, but apparently when he makes a decision he sticks to his guns.
]
Clearly upset, Basilly says, "I am sorry sheriff, but this is Temple business and I... I can say no more about it at this time as I must consult my superiors on the matter. And now I must leave... as the matter is of utmost importance."
"This is most irregular," says the sheriff gruffly. "I will have words with Seeker Lomani about this."
Basilly grimaces at these words and says, "Once again, my apologies, sheriff. But... I am afraid I must go."
"Keep him safe and I will talk with him when I come back," says Basilly as he heads towards the main entrance. 'Sorry, but I have to go,' are Basilly's parting words.
"Well," says the sheriff after Basilly has gone. "It would seem there are problems amongst the Seekers, or at least among their apprentices... And that might be of advantage to us for a while, if they feel embarrassed by the actions of their apprentices."

The first being the possibility that his actions are somehow connected to what else has happened tonight... On second thoughts, perhaps your young witness is not as safe here in this cell as I thought. Do you have any suggestions as to what we might do with him?"

"I still think that we need the expertise of a Seeker to evaluate Samel's testimony so there is no point in us speaking to him now. He cannot be released because I am sure that once he is out of our grasp that he will not testify, further to which his masters may show their displeasure in extreme ways. He has to be kept in protective custody and I am afraid that this is better than my Guard Post. "
"Saladin Brassman worked for me," begins the sheriff. "He was also a magus, who should have been able to protect himself. If his death was premeditated, then perhaps his murderer knows more about this guard post than we would like. And, if Brassman's murder has anything to do with what you discovered tonight... And with the Seekers acting strangely for some reason, then I think moving the witness somewhere else might be a good idea."
Putting his hand to his chin to stroke his beard, he thinks for a moment before saying, "Perhaps it would be better if we moved him to my house. We could go out the back way in case the station is under observation. We do not even need to go onto the main street to reach my house as it is just across the service road behind the Watch house."

"Which is why I suggested we hide," replies the sheriff grimly. "This place is not really defensible against magic and the one magus I had on staff was Saladin Brassman and the Seekers, who might have provided magical protection, now seem to be unreliable."
[OOC Active insight regarding the Sheriff's response.]

[OCC: As far as Dora is aware, Saladin Brassman was the only magus associated with the Watch on a regular basis before the advent of Guilliame de Marchant. So the sheriff's concern is possibly valid and Dora cannot read any other motives into his words.]
