Under raging storm clouds, a lone figure stands silhouetted against the ancient walls of Castle Ravenloft. The vampire Count Strahd von Zarovich stares down a sheer cliff at the village below. A cold, bitter wind spins dead leaves about him, billowing his cape in the darkness.
Lightning splits the clouds overhead, casting stark white light across him. Strahd turns to the sky, revealing the angular muscles of his face and hands. He has a look of power—and of madness. His once handsome face is contorted by a tragedy darker than the night itself.
Rumbling thunder pounds the castle spires. The wind’s howling increases as Strahd turns his gaze back to the village. Far below, yet not beyond his ken, a party of adventurers has just entered his domain. Strahd’s face forms a twisted smile as his dark plan unfolds. He knew they were coming, and he knows why they have come—all according to his plan. He, the master of Ravenloft, will attend to them.
Another lightning flash rips through the darkness, its thunder echoing through the castle’s towers. But Strahd is gone. Only the howling of the wind—or perhaps a lone wolf—fills the midnight air. The master of Ravenloft is having guests for dinner. And you are invited.

Background: Failed Merchant
Backstory: Keteria comes from a large family of 9 children. Her mother was an honest laborer and her father was a bureaucrat. While he always provided for the family, his interaction with rich and powerful leaders tempted him. He got involved in a scheme to divert some money from city taxes and wound up in prison. Mother raised the children the best she could. Keteria had been born in the middle of the family and a twin at that. Her twin brother, Callum, and her often got into mischief but were largely ignored among all the children. While Keteria would be right along side Callum, she was usually the one getting him out of trouble when adults did notice. As such she developed her skills at Persuasion.
When they grew up, Callum showed an interest in being a merchant and of course Keteria supported him. They had the opportunity to start a small tavern with the hopes to develop it into an inn. Unfortunately, her father's weakness apparently was inherited by Callum (although Keteria does not know this). Callum made some bad deals and was facing the closure of the tavern. To save his stake, he made it look like Keteria's cooking had caused food poisoning, and as such disgraced her. She left the tavern to help him save the establishment's reputation. Callum took what he saved from her departure, cut back and turned the tavern around.
Keteria wandered looking for the means to redress the wrongs she felt she had done to her brother, also always looking for a means to repay him what she thought she had cost him.
Keteria was strong and charming and she soon found herself lured into enlisting among the soldiers of the local rulers to at least protect her family as she could and to have a stable income which she could send to her family. In the battles she was part of, she was injured by a a volley which knocked her unconscious. She awoke among the injured in a hospital tent which was run by the Girded Healers - clerics of Ilmater and Torm tending to those injured in battle. She soon recovered and began to help in the hospital to help those worse injured. She was inspired by the work of the clerics and after many late discussions, was convinced to join them as a lay follower. Over the next year she went from battle to battle, helping and fighting. After a year of service, she was released from the military. The clerics she had come to work side by side with encouraged her to join the order and she was made a Paladin of the Girded Healers.
She continued this path for half a year, when a summons came from Castle Ravenloft to the order, to send one of their knights to an event. The order feared that any paladin sent would fall to the Count's temptations and will, yet reknown of Keteria's skill and persuasive abilities had passed among the realms. Thus it was decided that she might be sent to help other's who also might be in attendance not to fall to the evils of the Castle and the Count.

On the wings of Tihito, we will one day rise to dwell amongst the stars, where we shall be complete through the grace of their loving light, inherit their wisdom of a thousand thousand years. I was born under starlight, taught lore, song and prayer exalting starlight, shown how to bless others with its power. But…

None at the orphanage could/would tell him what happened. And the public records had seemingly endless unsolved cases from the slums, many with shockingly little detail. He joined the city watch to rub shoulders with the archivists and for the perceived authority to question citizens. This has yet to provide any fruitful leads. Acher has shown an eagerness to pursue supernatural explanations. Cultists, demons, and lately vampires.

Background: Haunted
Backstory: Acher witnessed the sudden death of his family as a small toddler. He was far too young to understand what he saw, and his memories are mainly a feeling of terror.
