Iridh Madh was a young initiate to a long tradition of oracles. Sequestered in their high, obsidian tower these men and women, known as The Watchers at Nai'Adir would read the signs and portents visible in the world and report them to the people, asking only for their livelihood in return. However, their power was much coveted, and the tower was sacked, and a few of the oracles were captured and stolen away to a distant land.
Iridh was but ten years old at the time, yet he knew what was coming. The oracles refused to sell themselves and their services and were subsequently executed. Iridh escaped to the labyrinthine library at the palace and managed to hide among the books. Over time he stole and read enough spellbooks in order to familiarise himself with a few spells of the art that was his birthright, in order to better hide and plot his escape. Five winters came and went in that cold land before he could leave. That was when a wizard of the Thearrothen Observatory, acquiring some rare books discovered his presence. This wizard stole him away from that place, taking him to the observatory. Iridh has found much more company among books than people along their journey, understanding them rather better.
If you are willing and feel you have the time, I would be interested in working with you on Iridh's backstory, over such details as to whether The Watchers of Nai'Adir are plausible in your setting. Brannip was born to good, gods fearing dwarves who lived and breathed the dust of the 'great beneath.' He grew up learning the trade, as all good dwarves do.
So when he told his family he was leaving to apprentice to a wizard, 'shook' does not describe the reaction. There are several epitaphs ready with his name on it, depending which one gets him first. He was quick to beat feet and lose his pursuers before they could organize.
Brannip earned his nickname earning money to pay for supplies and education as an apprentice. He fought in bare knuckle mage boxing matches. Mostly, it saw only scrawny, bookish types come into the ring, so a dwarf drew a bit of a crowd. Not that he was the best, but he was pretty good, and noted for his distinctly dwarvish "hammer," an oddly designed wand that looked a bit like a small war hammer.
Brannip has made it through his apprenticeship with flying colors and applied at the Observatory for decades. He was in the midst of writing another letter when he received notice that he'd been accepted, in fact. He's ready to finally put his life as a penniless, (practically) orphaned magician behind him, and start learning the true nuts and bolts of the highest force in existence.

Kaar's creation began with a peasant tinkerer. While the tinkerer was moderately successful, he spent most of his money on vices, primarily drink and women. When he wasn't drinking or carousing, the tinkerer spent his spare time creating a partner to do his work while he spent more time succumbing to his vices. As time went, the tinkerer found himself owing more and more money to the wrong people. One day, as the tinkerer was working on his masterpiece, his debtors arrived and were looking to collect. The tinkerer led his creation out the back door of the shop as the ruffians searched for him. Knowing his time was at an end, the tinkerer asked his creation to carry on for him, to learn, and to create. Kaar then set out into the world to try and honor the words of his creator, and one day avenge his death.

Born into a life of servitude, an attendant of a noble family who wishes to one day own the same kind of luxuries that they deliver to their employer. They worked hard to climb the servant hierarchy but wishes to find a life independent from the whims of the rich. Using nearly the entirety of their savings, they began purchasing and learning spells in secret, in hopes of freeing themselves by starting a business of enchanted items. And now- they are a wizard. A wizard who thought Enchantment was about enchanting magic items, only to realise after studying that it is instead about enchanting people. Unwilling to waste the effort they already spent, they carry on.
An invitation to the observatory was the opportunity they were waiting for. They charmed and lied their way out of the noble household one night and never looked back, hoping to whatever god that will listen that nobody thought them important enough to be brought back to their former employer.
A pleasant individual who is quite easy on the eyes, they present a demure front. Under that facade, however, is a sly schemer who is never satisfied with what they have. They always try to find ways to benefit themselves, and because of this, have trouble believing that others can be trusted outside of business deals.

Backstory:
Even in our most elated worldly moments, are we ever truly happy? My kind says no, urged on by the belief that we are destined for something greater… something infinitely greater. On the wings of Tihito, we will one day rise to dwell amongst the stars, where we shall be complete through the grace of their loving light and inherit their ageless wisdom. I was born under starlight, taught lore, song and prayer exalting starlight, shown how to bless others with its power. But…
It never felt right.
How could I believe this charade? I was of an inquisitive generation - we who were told tales of miracles, ancestors and cosmic purpose, but never witnessed these in action beyond the pages of storybooks. We who knew starlight, but saw it to be cold and devoid of love. We who cared not for olden tales in the same way our fathers did. This apathy soon had me shunned from the tribe, doomed to fly alone until I realized ‘the truth’. And so... my story begins.
Backstory: The first thing Kal remembers was a knife. He woke in a soft bed, clutching a silver dagger with the letters K L engraved on it. He remembered nothing, but his age. Soon after, guards entered the room, and helped him to his feet. He remembered being taken into a large hall, and seeing a tall man sitting in a chair, next to a woman and her child. They told him that he may not remember his childhood, but he was now their son. Second in line to the throne of (Insert name of country here). They didn't even give him a name, but he knew his initials. He fashioned them into a name....Kal. As a child, Kal was always treated differently. Not just because he was a prince, or for the reason that his skin was pale compared to the olive brown of his countrymen, but for another reason unknown to him. He was known, and often avoided if not feared by the palace staff, and even his own parents. As a result, he was forbidden from leaving the palace grounds.. His new brother, Niqolas, was the only person who saw past that. Niq was a statistic. The only crown prince in the history of the country to have no aptitude for magic. He was never scorned due to his parenthood, but he was as much of an outcast as Kal was. For the complete opposite reason. Kal was a prodigy. A master at his craft from a very young age, able to access complex spells that some masters took years to achieve. When Kal turned Seventeen, he started to ask questions about his history. Who were his real parents, why did he look different, and why was he so accomplished at magic, but the only answer he was given was 'All in good time'. So he decided to find out himself. He was reading a book in the Great Library, and his teacher had been long gone. Left to his own devices, he started to investigate. He searched for hours, and was about to give up when he found a scrap of paper hidden in an old spell-book. On it was a drawing of a man, with a twisting line of darkness trailing from his right arm, and a single word. Seidh. Kal searched with renewed vigour, and finally found a book with a reference to the elusive Seidh.
' ...The Seidh are mages like no others. Their magic is passed down through blood, and the last of them was said to be hunted into existence a millennia ago. They are called Aven (blessed) by some, weapons by others, but by most they are called cursed. Whatever the case, they are linked to the deepest of magics, and therefore powerful in the extreme. Their most coveted gift is their dominion over time. It is widely viewed as evil, but some would kill to have such a power. It is closely linked to the magic of Dunamancy....'
Horrified by his discovery, he confronted The King and Queen. They confirmed his worst suspicions. He was Seidh. They had adopted him after he was cast out, and kept the secret from him for his own good. Now that he knew, the only way to stop him from hurting himself and others was to be trained. To keep him away from prying eyes, they decided to send him to The Thearrothen Observatory. There was a risk that he would be discovered, but the risk was outweighed by the danger of Kal remaining untrained. He left that very day, and three months later, he arrived...
Oops, seems to have closed while I was writing. Oh well, all the best :)
Hey all. While difficult, I have made my selection on players. I had to close the recruitment a little earlier than planned, because the more I sat here, the more I began finding ways to write every single one of your characters into the story, and I can't run an adventure with this many people.
Don't fret though, like the original post said; I'm hoping to run a series of these adventures out of The Thearrothen Observatory, so if I have a player drop out when a new adventure begins, OR someone drops out in the middle of this adventure, I will be returning to this page and reaching out to see if anyone is still interested in joining.

“I will take responsibility for what I have done. [...] If must fall, I will rise each time a better man.” ― Brandon Sanderson, Oathbringer.
