Hey guys! I'm looking at running a set of adventures in a homebrew world of my own creation. The story is going to take place mainly around The Thearrothen Observatory, a wizard's academy. Because of this I'm looking mainly for a group of wizards. You can multiclass if you wish, but as you are receiving an invitation to study at the most prestigious academy on Weskeilia, you need at least one level in wizard. If playing a wizard doesn't interest you, perhaps this isn't the game for you. This world is a 4 year project of mine, on top of almost everything 5e official: expect your character to have access to 15 Weskeilian deities, homebrew magic items, spells, and feats.
Some world lore(more to be shared with the chosen players) The realm itself is young, just over 7,000 years. Currently 1,400 years into it's 4th era: Weskeilia is blooming again after the devastating ice age that was the 3rd era. The Thearrothen Peninsula shattered, creating the Thearrothen Archipelago, but destroying the physical structures that made up the Thearrothen Observatory, thankfully the academy itself lives within its own pocket dimension. The observatory was designed and constructed by Thul, Iris, and Sezira during the fall of the divine. Being constructed by divine deities itself, has helped the academy hold such a prestigious rank over other arcane academies. Many folk spend their entire lives waiting to receiving an invitation to study at the observatory, and you just received yours. You finally have your chance to shed your title as a hedge wizard. It's time for you to leave your corner of the world, and make your way to the southern part of Aelira.
Table expectations I'm extremely beginner friendly. I started DMing 4 years ago with a group of brand new players. 4 years later, we're still playing together, and two of them have become DMs. I will always help you figure something out, just ask. There are no stupid questions. I expect my players to show respect to each other, be LGBTQ+ friendly, and just generally a good person. Your dnd experience doesn't matter, you can have 30 years under your belt or 30 seconds. I welcome you all. I am however looking for people who are going to be able to get into character and roleplay. Being a pbp, there isn't any improv, you have time to think about your responses to something. I'm looking for people who are willing to post more than one sentence at a time. I'm also looking for at least one post a day, but preferably more. I will post as much as needed to keep things going.
Game expectations This isn't going to be a go to university simulator; while you may spend a moment here or there in a class, the majority of your time will be spent outside of the classroom. There will be tons of opportunity to roleplay, there will be lots of adventure. There will be magic and story.
Players and Characters I'm looking for 4 maybe 5 players to join on this adventure. Characters will be starting at 2nd level. At least one level needs to be in wizard, if you wish to multiclass. Bladesinging is the only wizard subclass banned, as the academy doesn't teach the art. Tasha's optional class features for wizards are allowed, and encouraged. Variant races are banned. If you don't own the subclass you wish to play, pick it anyway. If you get picked, you will have access to it. Think about who your character was prior to receiving this invitation.
Rolling stats Everyone loves rolling for stats, because it means there's a chance at an 18, but it always sucks when you get those real low rolls. I have implemented a rolling system in previous games, that my players really enjoy so we'll be doing that here as well. Everyone will roll their own ability scores with their application, then once players are chosen we will pool all of their rolls together and you will pick the set of rolls you'd like to use as a group. That way everyone gets to roll for ability scores and everyone gets to start out on the same foot, ability score wise. I allow 1s to be rerolled once, so be sure to toggle that when rolling your ability scores. Manipulated rolls and rolls with more than one 1 reroll will be ignored. To circumvent that dreaded manipulated rolls tag, roll your ability scores at the top of the post, push enter and paste the application below. After that, when you edit your post, do not touch the ability scores line. You can then freely edit your application without worry of the manipulated rolls tag. Alternatively roll your ability scores in a post and make your application in a separate post.
Application Please put your backstory and any images in a spoiler to create clean posts, and save screen space.

Close Date I plan on closing recruitment on the 30th of April, unless I receive an overwhelming amount of applications, then it'll close early.
Other We will run the game either on the forums here or on discord. I will leave this up to my chosen players as both have their advantages and I'm OK with either. As stated on post #16 no homebrew races or subclasses are available for this adventure. Please refer to post #31 for extra clarification for ability scores.
As a child, was very inquisitive while his playmates were possessive or raucous. In his teenage years, he found his way to one of Faerûn’s great institutes of learning, Candlekeep, where he was apprenticed and taught that knowledge is a more valuable treasure than gold or gems.
The great library is always in need of workers and attendants, some of whom rise through the ranks to assume roles of greater responsibility and prominence. Corwin became one of Candlekeep’s own, dedicated to the curatorship of what is likely the most complete body of lore and history in all of Faerun.
One day however, Corwin went out looking for new books to buy and crossed paths with a powerful archfey and angered him greatly. He was banished immediately by the powerful magic of this man and barred from ever returning. The only possessions that Corwin had at the time was a book that he had checked out to read and study. Fortunately, the book happened to be about magic and contained a few spells. Using his understanding of magic that he had previously studied and self teaching himself the rest, he learned the rudimentaries of being a wizard. However, in this new world and plane he realized he needed to have a more formal education if he was to succeed in returning back home and learning powerful enough spells to reach back to his plane of Faerun.
He submitted his application to the school of blank and awaited his acceptance into the school. Eagerly and excited he opened his letter to the most prestigious school of magic in the known world.
Name: Urtrogall Morubark Race: Half Orc Class (Subclass): Paladin (Oath of the Ancients), Wizard (School of Abjuration) Background: Sage Backstory
Urtrogall Morubark lived in western Aelira and serves Oghma, the god of knowledge. He searched ruins for ancient knowledge which he would try to use to help people with. But he began to be more interested in his studies and knowledge searching than being pious, and began to annoy his god.
One day he found the location of a long since abandoned cult base, and promptly looted it for whatever information he could find. Atop a bloodied alter was a stone tablet with something written in infernal. Urtrogall attempted to read it, but his eyes burned whenever he glanced at the text. Deciding that he would study it later, Urtrogall returned to his house with the tablet.
When he arrived, Urtrogall saw that his house was burned down, and almost all his belongings were destroyed. Dismayed, he searched the house to figure out what caused the destruction, but he couldn’t discern the cause.
At the same time, a courier reached his house and handed him a letter, which was an invitation to The Thearrothen Observatory. Urtrogall quickly decided to journey to the observatory, mostly because of all he could learn there, but also because he didn’t have a house anymore. The main thing he plans to do is to figure out what the stone tablet’s writing means.
Name: Hin (Hee-n) [any pronouns] Race: Changeling Class (Subclass): Wizard (Order of Scribes) Background: Sage Backstory:
Hin grew up around books. Their parents were some of the head librarians for the biggest library in the nation. The library held books containing dangerous secrets, and a massive amount of knowledge. So, the librarians used magic to help protect the knowledge from those that might use it for evil, and to help organize the library. Naturally, Hin would spend any free time with their parents at the library, pouring over books and learning a few basic spells from librarians they were close with. He would attend a lot of the childrens' storybook read-alouds that their parents would host, where he learned to use his shapeshifting powers to tell stories like they did.
Until one day, both their parents caught a deadly disease, and died. Hin was 16 years old. Using books to escape the trauma, they would spend as much time as possible in the library, if they weren't at the orphanage they were sent to. They spent the next few years like this, until they turned 18 and were kicked out of the orphanage. So, deciding that they wanted to do what their parents did, they set off to apply to the most prestigious wizarding academy in the area.
Name: Barburry Hillherd Race: Firbolg Class (Subclass): Wizard - Conjuration Background: Folk Hero Backstory
"Barry" started an orchard of apple and cherry trees which attracted many animals to his property. He began tending to the animals, not quite domesticating them but building a little natural community nonetheless. His favorite pastimes were tending the apiaries he kept at one end of the property and reading the various books that he could find in town. He bartered away his fruit, honey, and wax in the nearest town in exchange for supplies and books. One day, a hill giant came through his farmstead, tearing apart his orchard and gorging on his apiaries. Barry, too late to save his farm, followed the giant's tracks when he realized they lead to town. Using knowledge from the one book he pulled from the rubble of his life, he was able to assist the town in defeating the giant. Having nothing left back home, he stayed to help the town. The Alderman one day showed up with a letter. He, along with the town, had written to the Observatory on Barberry's behalf, recounting his tale of heroism and usage of the magical arts. Inside the letter was an invitation. With gratitude and an upbeat hopeful attitude, Barburry made his way to the observatory to begin a new life.

Believing that his thirst for knowledge had led him there in the first place he'd begin to praise it almost to the form of worship Believing that "Knowledge is power!" . Backstory:
Vera had a dream that vaguely explained the significance of her existence and purpose through a series of implicitly connected events. The dreams would manifest themselves in real life events which often mingled with the substances of material worlds, morphed them into unimaginable entity while manipulating the reality according to the laws of the realm of dreams and destiny. The dreams compelled her to move and wait for the right time to receive the instructions for doing the thing for which she survived even though she was the weakest of all.
She's trying to establish herself as a professional fortune-teller. She has a raven familiar named 'Zodiac' and an invisible/imaginary twin sister with whom she loves to communicate.
Balthazar's father, an elvish prince, abandoned him and his mother at a young age. Impoverished, they struggled to survive, and at the first opportunity, Balthazar ran away and joined a traveling theater troupe. Over time, he developed his bardic skills and became the court jester for a minor baron of the realm,.Balthazar spent his free time with his friend the court wizard, and discovered his own natural talent for magical study. His friend helped him submit an application to the academy.
Name:Xarian Harkes (link to DDB character sheet) Race: Wood Half-Elf Class (Subclass): Fighter(1) / Wizard(1) - War Magic planned (and wizard levels hereafter for the next 8+ levels at least). Background & Backstory: (see first spoiler).
Background: Soldier / Folk Hero (custom background)
Backstory:
Another lost cause, this one. Or so Xarian had thought.
For some reason, he had stood up to the bully this time. The big man. Gerrard Borresquieu, the son of the captain, looking every bit the part, had been laying into another sparring yard victim with his greatsword. This time, the sacrificial lamb had been Timothy, the chandler's son. One of Xarian's few friends. How the big man had laughed when Timothy, bruised and bleeding beyond reason for a friendly bout among soldiers, had lain face-down in the mud, unable to rise. Xarian Harkes found himself standing up.
Why, he could not say, exactly. His father had been a passing wood elf adventurer from the northern forests and his mother... his mother had been the kind of person that passing visitors paid a visit to often. Locals too. By all rights, he should have kept poring through his tattered book with its symbols and sigils, attempting use a pair of lodestones to mend his torn breeches. Arcane mumbling... halting with uncertainty. Xarian did have a greatsword to match Borresquieu, aye, and nearly the stature. Probably the quickness as well. But less experience, training and strength. And far less status of birth. Even if he won somehow, it would come out as a loss after the abuse he would take in the weeks to follow. Then again, he was probably not going to win.
But up he stood against all good reason, striding out into the yard as Gerrard's blocky face broadened into its customary grin, stupid and cruel. Next victim up. Xarian helped Timothy stand and turned to face the big man, remembering his technique, remembering his footwork. It was not going to be enough. Not against someone of Borresquieu's skill and raw power. As the greatswords clashed and onlookers shouted, Xarian retreated a step, then three more, parrying and countering for all he was worth. Even scoring a grazing hit that turned the big man's face red with surprise and anger as Xarian's owl, Pommel flapped her wings in Gerrard's face. Almost.. almost... Xarian gestured frantically and booming energy began to sheathe his opponent, but fizzled before it could coalesce. Ducking the big man's counterattack, he fell back hastily and set his stance again, gritting his teeth.
Everyone knew it could not last. Gerrard Borresquieu had a mountain's weight of training, strength and far superior parentage. The comfort and confidence of someone who knew his place in life as sure as the autumn snows in northern Aelira. As the first flakes began to fall, the big man feinted and slipped past Xarian's parry, a split second late this time. Gerrard's swing was not a sparring blow, but one to break ribs. Maybe crush a lung. Kill, even. Borresquieu grinned once again in anticipation.
And then roared suddenly in surprise. A strange, blue arcane shield turned the blade aside as Xarian desperately splayed his fingers in a warding gesture, off balance and falling backward, hardly understanding what he was doing.
"WHY DON'T YOU BLOODY APPLY TO THAT POINTY HAT, BOOK-FONDLING ACADEMY YOU POX-RIDDEN HALF-BREED SON OF A WHORE! THE SPARRING YARD IS NO BLOODY PLACE FOR MAGIC."
And so Xarian had. Applied to the academy, that is. Once he was able to move again after the beating that Borresquieu had proceeded to lay on him.
He just hadn't expected they would actually let him in.
I’ve never made a Wizard before, so this should be fun!
Name: Mytheaian Kaethius Race: High Elf Class (Subclass): Wizard (School of Illusion) Background: Noble Backstory:
Mytheaian (or Mythe, as she prefers) was born the first and only child of a noble family widely known for their magical ability. The house of Kaethius took great pride in the powerful and famous wizards it produced, and it was expected that every generation would turn out at least one renowned magic-user, each of which attended The Thearrothen Observatory. As an only child, all of these expectations fell onto Mythe. Fortunately for her, the young elf was blessed with the family's gift, her talents revealed at a young age in a rather traumatic incident involving illusions and a misplaced family spellbook. Because of this, many of her relatives believed her to be even more talented than her predecessors, proclaiming that, with her talents, she would become the greatest wizard of the noble house of Kaethius. These praises - along with the public favour she received as a child - eventually got to Mythe's head, and the young heiress grew up to be your typical wealthy ‘mean girl.’ Arrogant, powerful, beautiful and popular, Mythe built a name for herself among her peers, which carried over to the academy even before she attended - though perhaps this was mostly due to her family name, as many of her ancestors were well known graduates of the college. What Mythe's relatives and followers failed to realise was the immense amount of pressure they put her under. She felt she had to be perfect in everything single thing that she do, maintaining the image of the perfect Kaethius lady, lest she disappoint those whom looked up to her. This pressure led to an extreme build up of stress, which only mounted upon receiving the academy's invitation.

Wow, those are some terrible rolls.
I’ve never made a Wizard before, so this should be fun!
Name: Mytheaian Kaethius
Race: High Elf
Class (Subclass): Wizard (School of Illusion)
Background: Noble
