Vars shrugs, "It'll save time." Then he walks over to the cubed gnome and pulls out a short sword. Experimentally, he attempts to cut through the top corner of the cube. As he does this he says, "Do we want to check the other rooms first or try to get this fellow out of here? Might be best to leave him for now."
As Vars attempts to slice the cube the gelatin moves out of the way of the cut as the blade passes and then regains its shape.
Bjorn grins and picks up the journal on the desk, flipping to a random page as he heads back into the previous room. "Abernath must have liked you, Butterman!" He casts Minor Illusion upon the alchemy supplies, creating a puff of colored smoke that reveals various substances brewing in the jars, over magical green flames. "He used the nonlethal version of this spell on you. But I have here the instructions for the true version, and I am not blinded by affection in the way he was. So let's play nice, shall we?"
Deception: 18
You can’t tell if Butterman can hear you or not. His eye do flicker in your direction for a second
As the rope moves through the gelatin, Sparhawk tightens it by winding the two ends, like a lasso. He tries to make contact with the waist of the gnome. Assuming the gone is more solid than the cube he will then slowly pull the gnome out. He then grins and says, “hey Butterman, don’t move!”
“Ok, says Sparhawk, grinning so his orchish teeth show a bit in anticipation. Shall we try the rope trick and see what happens?” Sparhawk directs a few of them to carefully wrap the rope around the cube at waist level. Then. He tightens the rope so it stays attached at waist level. Then, assuming nothing bad has happened, he will start to tighten the rope and pull it through the cube. Until it reaches his friend, Butterman. He will adjust plan if something bad happens. Strength of 18 so should not be a big
problem for the the strong half orc.
Sparhawk flex’s his mighty halforc muscles and begins to pull on the rope. At first, he feels like it might work but as he pulls the rope the cube bends away from the rope. The base of the cube doesn’t move from its position and the farther you pull the more it bends, Butterman bends along with it.
The cube bends completely over, Butterman’s body bent at a sickening angle. His bulging eyes tell you he feels it. Then the cubes shape adjusts, the rope loop slips off and the cube returns to it’s upright position.
"I suppose we could find the answer to how to free him somewhere in this house but unless any of you have an idea on where to look I suggest we quickly search the rest of the house downstairs and then use the painting to return to the Hosttower."Sorsha says, looking at the crew.
"Very well." Bjorn will retrieve Tome of Foes and look for anything called "jelly," "gelatin," "transparent," or "clear." Or "cube." Meanwhile, he'll tag along with the group, but probably won't notice much because he's reading.
“I would imagine the cube doesn’t like fire much. Any oil around we could see if it will burn” says Sparhawk, still eager to interrogate Butterman. “Perhaps a torch”
"I'm with Sorsha," Vars says, "As much as I would like to hear what this gnome has to say before turning him in to the Hostower, it would be best to get a move on." He proceeds to head in the direction of the unchecked rooms.

but reading through the information it seems it related, but not the same. If this were the creature you are reading about, Butterman would have been dissolved or suffocated by now. The cube seems a magical substance more than a living creature.

“Hum” says Sparhawk. A bit upset his plan didn’t slice Butterman in half like a cheese grater. “Another try or should we move on?”

"Still got that monster book? This thing's behaving like it's alive."
“Monster book is in the library. May as well move on unless Butterman has a better idea”

"Okay, if you're going to try anything, do it now. I'll go with Vars and check the remaining rooms downstairs." Sorsha says, following the ranger.
The only thing close he finds is this https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/16869-gelatinous-cube.

Back down the stairs…
(Oh no, the house turned. ;-)
"Let's continue over here." Sorsha says to Vars and moves over to the door farthest from the front door, opening it and peeking inside.
Perception: 12
Sparhawk follows the group. [Did we find a possible secret door in the last room? A wall that didn’t seem to measure up right.?]
Vars follows silently, also looking around.
Perception: 16
(Um, yes, we found a teleportation circle.)
Ok.
