Candlekeep, a place of unparalleled knowledge, has traditionally avoided the destruction and evils that have plague most of the Sword Coast for centuries. Unfortunately, times have changed, The Keep has been rocked by a number of strange events. Desperate the First Reader, Bookwyrm, has formed the Candlekeep Investigative Agency (C.I.A.) to solve these mysteries and put a stop to the madness. To worsen matters the stars have all fallen from the night sky leading to widespread panic and fear.
You have been identified as an individual of skill and potential by Matreous, a high ranking Avowed with a special interested in the Far Realm. He is looking for able bodied adventurers who can help solve these events.
Is he correct? Do you have the talent to unravel the mysteries of Candlekeep and prevent whatever calamity is surely approaching?
I am looking for 4 to 5 active players who are interested in taking part in a spin off adventure based on my currently running Candlekeep Mysteries campaign. This new adventure will run in the same universe and in parallel with the events of that thread. There is the possibility of cross-overs and the events of each campaign will have an impact on the other.
Character Creation Details
All official sources are cool. No homebrew, I am not a good enough DM to balance it.
Point buy or roll for scores. If you roll please roll in this thread. You may re-roll 1s once.
You will start at level 4 so build you character as such.
Multiclassing is fine but it has to make sense in the narrative or your backstory
Daventry, Triassa, Ludolf, Pardot and Klin… don’t apply. Try not to read the thread :)
There are two types of people in Candlekeep. The Avowed who live, study and run the keep and Seekers. Seekers are visitors who have two Ten-days to use the resources of the library for whatever purpose they came for. Your PC may be either for this campaign.
About me!
I enjoy the story telling aspect of DnD more than combat particularly on pbp. That being said we will definitely have combat it will just be story relevant. I am on GMT -4 and tend to be very active. I hope that everyone who wants to play can be active and I ask you post at least once a day. If you are curious to see how I run games feel free to read through The Candlekeep Mysteries.

Backstory: Imikul grew up in the slums of the outskirts of Baldur's Gate, and ran away at a young age. He came to Candlekeep to learn the ways of thievery. Rumors abounded that there was a whole section in the library devoted to clandestine operations - breaking and entering, leaving no trace, and most importantly, how not to get caught. A whole section of tomes for the underworld and deceit. It was there that Imikul learned, and learned quickly. Practising his arts in and around town, Imikul soon got very good. In fact, he soon became one of the best. Before long, his accomplishments gained the interest of the First Reader, and Imikul was given a choice - be hanged for his crimes, or work for the First Reader to acquire the books that current owners were loathe to part with. There was only one choice...
Why are you in Candlekeep? What are you studying or trying to learn? He came to Candlekeep to improve his skills, but now works for the First Reader.
What is your favorite dessert? Because of his humble, impoverished upbringing, Imikul's favorite dessert is a simple one - warm scones, butter and jam. It was one of the staples that his mother used to make, and reminds him of home.
Class and subclass: Hexblade Warlock/Pact of the Blade
Backstory: Morg a escort one day and a wanderer the next. No place seems to satisfy him. There is a restlessness in his heart and for a time he did not know it why. Until that is he found himself waking up in the gutter. There he saw his reflection in a puddle that he hoped was water. Something akin to goblins, but not quite. Aye he new his parents, but his people has barely any recorded history. He heard rumors of knowledge held in Candlekeep, but alas lacks the coins. Once more he falls back onto an escort job. This time he walked with Althea a cleric of Tempus. After some time he even found himself saying a silent prayer for Tempus. He found out she needed less protecting and more like company for a journey. Once done he parted ways and made his way to Candlekeep.
Why are you in Candlekeep? What are you studying or trying to learn? To Search for the origin of the Verdan race.
What is your favorite dessert? Pie stuffed inside a cake and then drizzled with mango puree. He spent some time escorting the cleric of Tempus. To the point he became accustomed to the luxurious food served at the temple
Class and subclass: Bard College of Swords future Artificer battle smith
Backstory: John came from Waterdeep where he played his flute to hundreds in the local taverns and play halls his performances seemed magical he even studied at the local college, But to him there seemed to be something missing. The hooded figure took out a flute and started to play a haunting tune and the figure sitting on the table started to dance. Jonathan fascinated approached the table and asked to join him to his surprise the figure was an Ogre who smiled and pointed to an chair. Being a man with an open mind John sat and watched intently as the clockwork figurine of a ballerina danced once the Ogre was don he introduced himself and Jonathan couldn't help but ask how the figurine came to be The Ogre replied that it was something he learnt at Candlekeep from years of study. Jonathan was soon there after much travel with his theses and was emitted with the recombination of the Ogre.

Backstory: Sylvest is a rambler, a gambler and a long way from home. He left that tiny village in the dust as soon as he could and has never once looked back with nostalgia. With a marked deck of cards in his pack, his grandfather's flute tucked into his vest and his natural born charm and wit he was on to bigger and better things. And he was. Sylvest was able to make quite a life for himself going from town to town, up and down the paths. He learned as many stories as he told, he won far more pots than he lost, and he was careful to not woo too many of the wrong women and totally burn his welcome out of a city. And when things did get a bit... ultraviolent... Wel, that's exactly why he was so handy with the sword.
Why are you in Candlekeep? What are you studying or trying to learn? A few months back things started to go... cockeyed. In some ways it was a boon but in other ways he wasn't so sure. That old flute that he stole off the mantle? The one he was always told had been his grandfathers and he couldn't so much as touch? The one he... Let's say, borrowed? Well a few months back it start speaking to him. All too literally. It claims it's name is H.R. Pufnstuf and needs Sylvest's help in reclaiming "The Living Island." It's offering fame and power if Sylvest will just help it... So Sylvest is looking up this H.R. Pufnstuf and Living Island to see if he can find any information about either before he finalizes the deal... or loses his mind.
What is your favorite dessert? All the best meals end with warm, friendly companionship. Even if the meal wasn't good, the companionship is. ((Note: I most definitely won't be overplaying the lascivious bard cliche. I would make the occasional nod to the idea, the subtle suggestion of such... Class and subclass: Warlock The Hexblade ( 1lv )+ Bard College of Swords ( 3lv )
Backstory:
Lunar was one of the orphans who was raised by evil cultists to be their pawn or sacrifice. She couldn't remember her birth name but never forgot the song her mother sang to her.
One day Lunar was singing the song when she was clearing the bloody altar. The sword that was used for sacrifice spoke to her. " Can you sing louder? " It said. " I'm bored of those idiots' songs. Their breath stinks and their story sucks! " After a short conversation, the two became friends, and they shared their songs and stories.
Two weeks later, the den of cultists was wrapped in a flame. Many died. No one found that a girl and a sword disappeared with a bag of gold and jewels.
Why are you in Candlekeep?
Lunar and her friend are always thirsty for new songs, hungry for good stories. And where all the music and tales gather like the streams flow into the sea? That's Candlekeep.
What are you studying or trying to learn?
Legends, myths and tales of heroes. Especially about the Grand Duke, Abdel Adrian. Also if she can get new spells and skills, that will be better.
Backstory: A devotee to Nebelun, or Gond as he's known to some, Calwin has a long history as a lover of research, books and learning. So much so that it's gotten him in trouble before. There was the time where he was just passing through a city that had gotten all up in arms about the works of a particular author, deeming their work too offensive to their civilized sensibilities. Calwin wasn't a huge fan of the author either, but it tipped things over when some righteously indignant folks organized a book burning, and tried rounding up all the copies they could find, and any other offensive books while they were at it. He doesn't quite recall all that happened, but fled the town with a series of assault, theft and even arson charges dogging his steps. Eventually most of that got smoothed over, though he's not set foot within miles of the place since.
Another time he started a bar fight because he saw someone turning the pages of a book with greasy fingers... so he broke their fingers and headbutted them in the nose, breaking that as well. Eventually his impulsive anger needed a bit of restraint, and he ended up making his way to Candlekeep, where he's been serving as an Avowed, and so far has a pretty good track record. The Candlekeep is pretty protective of their books, so the Seekers tend to treat them well, and other than a few earnest threats to those who perhaps bent the spine back a bit too far, or dog-eared a page or two, he's been fitting in well enough.
Why are you in Candlekeep? What are you studying or trying to learn? Candlekeep gives his overdeveloped sense of protection of the written word a more creative outlet. He's been studying the application of magic to the written word, and vice versa, having within the last few years of study managed to unlock a smattering of spell he's able to apply to his daily tasks, allowing him to clean and repair books that are mishandled (Magic Initiate: mending, prestidigitation, comprehend languages).
What is your favorite dessert? As a snack he prefers hard candies, as they can be enjoyed without getting sticky fingers, a big no-no when it comes to handling books. If he's at a place that does a good one, he's partial to a berry pie, one just has to be careful to clean up before handling books!

Why are you in Candlekeep? What are you studying or trying to learn- Inutilis wants to learn how the star have fallen from the night sky and if the Mind Flayers are behind the mess of this universe
What is your favorite dessert- He will eat any dessert
Backstory: Ever since he was a young man, Agar's day dreams revolved around being a paladin. A stalwart hero of justice who protected the weak and kicked evil's butt. His nightly dreams, though, were quite different. A shadow haunted him, a darkness which stained every dream he had. Ever present, ever growing, and by the time he was in his teens it dominated his dreams. During the day, he sought to deny it and fill his mind and soul with holy light, but the more he tried the more it seemed to present itself. It became quite the burden on his willpower to deny it, until one day - at the worst possible time - his will failed. It was the day all his efforts were to bear fruit, the culmination of his training and dedication. It was the day he was to take the Oath of Devotion and become a full-fledged paladin of the Order. He stood before the priest of Tyr at the order's chapel, surrounded by paladins and other squires to give his Oath. But when he opened his mouth, the shadow struck. Instead of words, magical darkness spilled forth from his mouth, pooling around him so quickly that he stood within total blackness all around him... There was a side entrance within reach and he stumbled out, running as fast as his feet could go. He didn't slow down until he was out of the city. After a display like that, he knew, there was no chance the Order would accept him no matter how sincere his oath. A paladin who conjured magical darkness...? He traveled far to the north up the Sword Coast to get away from his old life, went to the forest to hide and found an abandoned cabin to live in, leaving occasionally to earn enough coin with his sword to live on.
Why are you in Candlekeep? What are you studying or trying to learn? He's trying to find any information he can on his peculiar power, to try to get a grip on it so he can avoid losing control of it again.
Backstory: Archaelogist who wants to find ancient relics and keep them away from dark forces. (Ideal: That artifact belongs in a museum.)
Why are you in Candlekeep? What are you studying or trying to learn? While he is an Avowed, whenever he finds clues in the books that describe ancient ruins or lost magic items, he will sneak away to get materials for the library or to sell to museums nearby. His demotions for going AWOL keep him at the lowest level of the assistants, but he is skilled enough that he has avoided being expelled from Candlekeep, so far.
What is your favorite dessert? Sallah's favorite desserts are dates (must be fresh, as he worries about them going bad) and well-chilled gelatin (doesn't like it when warm and runny)
