This is a limited recruitment recruitment post! I'm likely only selecting one (1) wizard to join us.
Hey all! The events of the first adventure to take place at The Thearrothen Academy, a wizard's college, came to an end a few weeks back. I'm back to begin the second adventure! The majority of my players from the first adventure are returning to join in on this one, but one player has confirmed they're unable to return and another is currently up in the air. That means at this moment, I'm looking for a single wizard to join in this adventure with the possibility of a second wizard.
Some world lore
The realm itself is young, just over 7,000 years. Currently 1,400 years into it's 4th era: Weskeilia is blooming again after the devastating ice age that was the 3rd era. The Thearrothen Peninsula shattered, creating the Thearrothen Archipelago, but destroying the physical structures that made up the Thearrothen Observatory, thankfully the academy itself lives within its own pocket dimension. The observatory was designed and constructed by Thul, Iris, and Sezira during the fall of the divine. Being constructed by divine deities itself, has helped the academy hold such a prestigious rank over other arcane academies. Many folk spend their entire lives waiting to receiving an invitation to study at the observatory.
It's been a couple months since a group of young hedge wizards at the academy, and the local transcription professor Mazhulli'maameq'zall'lulath, better known as Maz, claim to have met the deity Thul, while checking out an archeological dig the academy had recently funded. Things have begun to quiet down on that front, new students have arrived at the academy, making said group not the freshest meat on campus anymore, and some crazy experiments have been going on as of late, as the result of students attempting to graduate. A strange shadowed creature has been spotted roaming the academy grounds at night lately.
Table & Game expectations
I'm a very beginner friendly DM. I'm happy to help out with anything you need during character creation. Never feel bad for asking questions. I expect all of my players to respect each other. We're here to play a game and have fun, we should all feel comfortable at the table. I post as often as needed, and my current players are pretty active as well. I'm looking for folks who are capable of posting at least once a day.
We may be going to a college here, but this isn't a university simulator! Some time may be spent in a classroom, and most of our time will be on university grounds, but there will be plenty of chaos. There is a lot of opportunity for roleplay, especially if you initiate it with each other, there will be some adventure, and there might even be some magic.
Because this is a PbP and combat can be an infamous time killer, I run fewer combat encounters than I do in a normal live game. I replace the combat encounters with puzzles, roleplay, and other dangers. The Loreweaver's Academy had no combat encounters in it, but this adventure will most definitely have some combat. (The same XP is rewarded for avoiding an encounter as is for fighting and winning one.)
Players and Characters
I'm looking for one player to join in this adventure, with the potential for a second player, if my player who hasn't gotten back to me yet can't join. You will be starting at 4th level, and as this is a wizard's academy, you will need at least one level in wizard. While bladesinging is in my world, this specific academy doesn't teach it, so there is a soft ban on the bladesinging subclass. Tasha's optional class features for wizards are allowed, and encouraged.
Variant races are banned. The Tasha's create-your-own-race is banned as well, but tasha's optional race changes are allowed. You should be able to play whatever race you wish, however you wish. If you don't own the subclass or race you wish to play, pick it anyway. If you get picked, you will have access to it. I do not own Strixhaven, so the Owlin race is, unfortunately, unavailable unless you own it. The Owlin race is not banned. I just don't own Strixhaven. No homebrew races, subclasses, or backgrounds will be allowed in this adventure. If your application includes banned material, I will not consider you, as you didn't take the time to read what I took the time to write. It's only fair.
At the time of you applying, you can decide if you're brand new to the academy, or if you've been studying here for a few months already. We will further develop your connection to the academy in our session 0. Your character was likely a commoner prior to joining the academy (this doesn't have to be the case) think about who they were before being invited to study at the academy. There are two ways to get invited to study at the academy, either the academy sent you an invitation, or your family paid an extravagant bribe to the current Keeper of the Observatory, Cylic Ferdeth.
Ability scores You don't need to roll stats for this application. I have all my players use the same stats, and because the majority of the players in this adventure are returning players, you'll be taking their stats as your own, which are 16 15 14 14 13 11.
Application Please put your backstory and any images in a spoiler to create clean posts, and save screen space.

Close Date I don't plan on keeping this open long, as I likely only need one person, but until I know if I need one or two players, I will be keeping recruitment open.
Before applying & other information (any additional information to come up during recruitment will show up here) The game will take place here on the D&D Beyond forums, so I can better bounce between this and my current PbP. Feel free to post more than one application. I ask if you post more than one application, add them all in a single post. Don't create multiple posts if you can help it. You can edit your post to add another application. You're welcome to check out my current PbP (The Crypt of the Blood Witch) if you would like to check out my DMing and posting style. Post #7 - I only need 1 player, instead of the potential 2.
Born far smarter than the average kobold, Draconicus considers himself above his kin. Unsure of why he was blessed with his amount of intelligence, he became convinced that he is the reincarnation of a dragon. After teaching himself a few spells, he set out to hone his magical abilities, believing that someday, his arcane accomplishments will grant him the ability to ascend to his true form. Traveling from town to town, he learned what he could about magic. He also spread his blessings to any town or person he thought deserved them. These blessings involved scaring off the occasional beast, taking care of any ghost and undead infestations, or just bestowing some sort of magical gift on them. Usually, the people were pleased with his gifts, repaying him with food and coin, just as they should. He is a dragon after all; they should be honored to pay him for his trouble.
Occasionally, his “gifts” involved tricking the townsfolk into believing he did something that he didn’t really do. Sometimes it involved setting up fake ghosts and ghouls for him to scare off. This was done through illusions or extensive pulley systems. He did this in hopes of making a name for himself, and to get food on his plate.
Draconicus was not surprised when he received an invitation to attend the Academy. He accepted without hesitation. Surely that place would hold the key to mastering the arcane.
Born to a very wealthy family, Daldari always expected to go to the Academy. Whether through bribe, or through impressing them with his 'exceptional' abilities. His parents sent a letter to the academy, hoping to receive an invitation for Daldari. However, he was ultimately rejected due to his 'undesirable behavior'. Of course Daldari couldn't believe this, knowing that he was of a high standing family and was always on his best behavior. It wasn't his fault that some people were born of a lower status...or intelligence level...than he. He was infuriated, but within his heart of hearts knew that the rejection was valid. Quietly, he went about changing his ways...though he sometimes slipped up. He truly did try...alright that one time when he called the Duke's son a pompous twit was a little out of line, but that doesn't mean the kid didn't deserve it!
About a year later, he received an invitation to the academy out of the blue. He was surprised to see that they had (somehow) noticed his change in disposition and had invited him to the academy. (He still doesn't know whether or not his parents paid a bribe to get him this letter, or not.) Having just arrived at the academy, he is determined to impress those around him with both his lineage and his talent--in a humble way of course.

Quilliam is an alchemist for the "Sondersum & Sons, Ltd", a potions guild in [*insert industrious city name*]. His hard work over the last few years have endeared him to the Guildmaster, who wants to give Quill the chance to expand his education and thereby broaden his utility for the guild. The admissions fee was paid to the Keeper of the Observatory, with the condition that Quilliam does well in his courses. Quilliam is excited to be studying more than just alchemy, as all avenues of Arcana are of interest to him, but will he be able to stay on track for the sake of the guild or will his inquiring mind lead him into mischief and crippling debt? Let's find out together...

To delve. To dig. To discover. What could possibly be more exciting?
Sierra was always an adventurous child, wandering far from home during the day to wander the local forest. The shattering of the Thearrothen Peninsula left countless ruins to explore and relics to uncover. Her parents often scolded her for coming home every night with dust in her hair, touting rusty arrowheads and broken statuettes from a forgotten age.
Until one day, her curiosity got the best of her.
Sierra uncovered a trapdoor in the shattered remains of a temple. But as she entered the narrow shaft, she lost her balance and slid down into the dark abyss.
The search parties labored for weeks as her parents' hope of finding her alive soured into a resigned wish to just recover her body. Imagine their cries of joy when out of nowhere, Sierra returns home, unscathed and in perfect health. But she didn't return unchanged.
Sierra would never talk about what she saw underneath the temple. But talk to her, and she'll be able to predict every word you would say before you opened your mouth. Lose something, and she could find it in moments. She could tell the farmers when best to plant their crops, and she'd be right.
Of course though, her new-found talents were drawn to archaeology. After she came of age, she ventured to the world's most remote sites; her efforts uncovered artifacts that hadn't seen the light of day since the third era ice age. Her fame grew just as much as the collections of the museums she worked for.
That's why she was inclined to turn down the invitation to the Academy when she first received it. She worked best alone, with her trusty lantern and shovel. However, once hearing of rumors that professor met the deity Thul at an archaeological site, she immediately packed her bags and headed for the Academy.
