As a Tiefling, Kyus' life was already set. He was born to two human aristocrats, his mother, Hansa, having climbed the social ladder until she made a name for herself within the city. When Kyus was born, his parents knew having him around would hurt their carefully curated social standing, and quickly gave him away to the military.
Kyus grew up among strong men and women, and learned how to handle himself in a fight at a young age. And as much as he loved the sword and close combat, he found a strong love with the bow. By the time he was eighteen, he had become a proficient scout within Aldhahab's military. His skill had given him some renown, and by the time he reached twenty three, he had been promoted to sergeant of an entire cohort.
During a series of prolonged skirmishes with hostile orc tribes, Kyus had received wrong intel from a spy sympathetic with the orcs. Thus, he led his men into a trap that saw most of them slaughtered and left him deeply wounded. A slash across his neck that nearly killed him has now left his voice raspy, and makes it difficult for him to speak.
Soon after the incident, he resigned from the military to seek a life of solitude, ashamed of what he had done. He wandered into the desert and used the skills he learned in the army to not only survive, but keep the city safe from bandits, orcs, or any other monstrous races foolish enough to wander his patrol routes.
Background: Outlander (Though he had lived in the land of Aldhahab since he was little, his family lived in a tribe close to the now evaporating Okhiti river)
Backstory: Jahiem lived among a seclusive tanuki tribe along the banks of the Okhiti river, where he learnt how to channel his astral image into the real world and empower his physical strength and agility. His tribe had a bad reputation with the pharaoh in the past because of a fatal misdirection in a joint battle that led to half of them being wiped out and abandoned to be captured by the opposing enemy. Adding to the problem was the drying up of the river they had longed relied on for food and cooling, which worsened their already strained relationships. Although he understood why his tribe was not willing to cooperate, Jahiem knows that if someone does not step up to at least negotiate a truce with the pharaoh the whole situation will worsen. It was only until he got a private message saying that he needs to come alone to meet her that Jahiem snuck off from his tribe's safety to discuss what is going on and why this unrest needs to end.
Reason why you might be called upon by the queen to help solve her problems:
Once time when he snuck off from the tribe to explore the city (his tribe rarely came into contact with the local people let alone interact with them due to a strained past), the young tanuki saved the Pharaoh's guards from a horde of invaders all by himself. Although he was unaware that the people he saved were enemies of his tribe, he got a message from the pharaoh herself telling him to come to the royal temple so that they can ease tensions between the two forces and repair past amends other than helping her with the problems that are going on right now.
This sounds interesting. The idea of ancient Egypt inspired setting with racial castes is a good angle for roleplay and a focus on puzzles and roleplay over combat always tickles my fancy.

Question - I've been eyeballing some races and regarding centaurs and satyrs: mechanically these are classified as fey but they are also (half-) animal races. Where do these fall within society's roles?

I really like your submission, he sounds like a very compelling character. But this part of your submission has to change as Queen Kheprina has no heirs to her throne yet, as she is yet to mother a child.

Thankyou! In regards to centaurs and satyrs, I'm afraid I actually forgot to put their classification in. (ノ_・) Sorry....
I imagine that centaurs would be the same as the animalistic races of Aldahahab, and satyrs are more fey like so they would fall into the merchant category.

Thanks for the quick reply ^^
Last question: you mentioned all races and classes are allowed. There are however some races that are bound to a specific setting such as Simic Hybrids and Vedalkens (Ravnica) or Mark of X (Eberron) Would you prefer these not to be used or are they applicable once disregarding their original flavour and given an ancient Egypt take?

My pleasure.
I'm unfamiliar with mark of X so I guess you could give that one a miss.
I would venture to say that simic hybrids are playable in this setting, but it'll be tricky. Barring official names, we could keep their creation story the same, and say that they came from another realm or plane. They could be refugees, fleeing from their home realm to a far less technologically advanced one (despite Aldahahab being the most prosperous of all the kingdoms in Afnen.)
I did some research into Vedalkens and I do believe that they are easily adapted into this setting as they aren't all that closely tied to Ravinca. They can be scholars of the queen's court. You do not have to get rid of their original flavour, they can still be the smart and academic blue nerds we know and love, but they won't be as technologically advanced.

The heat of the sun is unbearable. My skin is teeming with blisters and burns. My tongue is swollen and feels like lead in my mouth. It's been two days since my waterskin ran out. A vulture circles above me. It's biding its time until the inevitable happens. I lift my hand to shade my eyes.
Blasted yellow-bellied, forked tongued, no-good, greedy dragonfolk! The voice of my grandfather booms through the shop. Trying to swindle me, do they? We'll see about that! Boy! I look up from the clay pot I'm sculpting. Yes, grandpa? I ask. When he gets worked up like this, it is best to just go along. Gather your things and prepare the cart. We'll make the delivery ourselves. They want a bigger cut? Hah, we'll just cut them out all together!
The cart bumps into my back. I stumble and fall to my knees. The desert is hot. I'm tired. The sand feels soft. It blows all around me. My eyes sting. Every dune looks the same.
But grandpa, wouldn't a delivery by land take much longer than taking a ship down the Shaqiq river? Bah! If you push through and keep a steady pace, you'll take but half a day longer tops. Now quit your yapping: those pots and vases aren't going to load themselves on to the cart. Yes grandpa.
I lie down on my belly. Perhaps I should rest for a spell. Regain my strength. When the sun goes down and the air cools, I'll continue on. It's funny. Maybe it's the heat but I could swear I hear a strange voice ringing out over the sands just as I close my eyes...
"Your destiny lies elsewhere."
I wake up. My ears sting. They feel smaller. Bits and pieces are missing. The vulture has eaten its fill. My head hurts. I rake my fingernails across my face to scratch away the burning skin. I do the same to my arms, legs, torso and anywhere else my skin burns hot. My skin cracks like a field without rain but the cool night air soothes my skin. It makes me look like I have scales. My strength has returned. I am no longer thirsty. I get up. Why is there a cart here? Was there something I had to do?
"Seek out she who rules the two rivers. The desert sands shall aid the waters."
I put one foot in front of the other. The sand blows all around me. Aldhabab beckons in the distance.

Hello everyone! The time is half past nine pm on Wednesday the tenth of August where I live, so applications to this thread are now officially closed.
I'd like to start by thanking everyone for their amazing characters. I loved reading through them all, so curse you for making my decision so hard! I wish I could have accepted everybody, but alas, running a campaign that large would be a nightmare.
That being said, I loved all the applications enough to change my original plan of having six characters to having seven. Those seven players will receive private messages shortly.
Thanks again to everyone for spending so much time submitting your characters. Much obliged, and remember, if someone feels the need to drop out, I may call on you to replace them if you are still willing.
:)
