Far away, in the utmost northern tip of the continent of Afnan, lies a kingdom of beauty and prosperity. The twin rivers, Shaqiq and Okhiti, flow through the country, feeding its people who come from all walks of life. The Land of Aldhahab prospers, and its Pharaoh rules with pride.
And yet, there is something dark corrupting the land of the golden sands...the Sphinxes who prowl the desert dunes have grown restless, ominous noises can be heard in the pyramids and worse still, the river Okhiti is slowly turning to mud before the eyes of those who have come to rely on her. Pharaoh Kheprina fears for her people and calls upon the greatest adventurers in the land. Who will come to her aid?
Hello! Thanks for clicking on this thread. I'm looking for 5-6 players who will be interested in playing in an ancient Egyptian themed setting, with a few fantasy twists. The game will officially kick off nearer to the end of the month (the twenty fifth of August to be specific), but I'm posting this now so that I can work player backstories into the campaign.
Rules and regulations:
- Characters start at level three, no magical weapons
- Homebrew is ok so long as you ask me first and get my permission
- Game will feature some combat but it is mostly roleplay and riddle/puzzle heavy
- All player races, classes and backgrounds are allowed (So please do give your character a background!)
- I will not be providing any additional source material for various races and classes, apologies in advance.
Please note: This setting, though based on Egypt, isn't actually Egypt (That being said, please remain respectful when roleplaying). Therefore, fantasy races are allowed, but each race plays a unique role in Aldahahab. Keep that in mind when making your character (of course, your character is allowed to have broken the system as part of their backstory, provided they started out the normal way or their family did):
Dragonborn and fey races (excluding elves) are merchants, seldom staying in the country long. Dwarves and gnomes are craftsmen. Elves, half elves and aasimar make up the nobility of the nation. All animal based races are seen as religious figures and are put in places of power (priests/acolytes/advisors). Warforged are created to guard ancient tombs. Humans, kalashtar and water genasi make up the working class, and farm the banks of the rivers. Orcs, goblins, kobolds, and other stereotypically evil races are the enemies of the state, if any are captured they will be forced into slavery like the earth genasi, fire genasi, air genasi and goliaths. Lastly, tieflings and changelings serve as elite military forces, though it is not uncommon for them to become musicians in times of peace, like halflings whose sole purpose seems to be to constantly serenade the streets with their music.
Anyway, I can't wait to read through your submissions! Just keep in mind that I'd like this not to be too mature, AKA no R-rated content. If something makes me or the other players uncomfortable, I will not hesitate to remove you from the group.

Ankou: warforged spore druid 3
Now you may be wondering: what business does a warforged have in the cycle of life and death? Once there was a minor god of death. The god only had jurisdiction over the souls of a now extinct race. For hundreds of years, it stalked the lands searching for the last soul of that race: that of a lich. One day, starved of worship and nearly at the end of his rope, he felt a pull. He obeyed the summons but then he found himself trapped in a ritual circle. It was a ploy to conquer the hungry and weakened god, in a final attempt to truly attain immortality. However, ego triumphed over wisdom that day, as the lich instead bound the god to his service and trapped it in the body of a warforged. For the next few decades, the god was bound in servitude to the lich.
One day, a group of adventurers fought the lich and destroyed his phylactery. A single soul was just the push the god needed to break the bonds of its enchantment, and it consumed the lich's soul forever. The story should have ended there, but it didn't. Under normal circumstances, the god would finally die, having completed its purpose, but in this case, the god's essence was bound to the warforged. The god then "merely" lost its divine spark.
Now the god walks the land as a spiritual advisor of sorts. The priests of the various gods of death found themselves oddly drawn to this man-shaped machine of ceramic and bronze who knew a lot about divinity and death.

Hmmm....shifters would probably be either working class, or in the case of an ambitious, hardworking individual who isn't afraid to fluent their more animalistic side, a religious position would make sense as well.

I have a half-orc in mind, what would be his role in your world? I belive a half-orc would be the child of a slave and treated like one, but I'd like to hear your thoughts about it.
Backstory: Seria was very young when her human mother was killed for breaking a law. You see Seria lived in a village where elves were forbidden to enter. And when the law found out, her father and her were forced to flee to a secret village that was inhabited by criminals and outlaws who were on the run.
There she learnt everything she needed to survive on her own. That included thievery, spying, and a part time assassin(I can take this part off if needed)
The people of the law discovered the village and raided it. Hardly anyone made it out that day. Her father was lost that day. After that she fled to Afnan away from her past which she runs from.
Then she came across The Land of Aldhahab. As a merchant complex, she knew she could find something useful in the city. She continued with what she had been taught and became one of the most wanted criminals but was never caught. No one had even caught more than a glimpse of her face.
She knew every nook and corner around there. When she felt a sudden change in the winds, she sought out to find out the source of it. She infiltrated the Pharaoh Palace and spoke directly to Pharaoh Kheprina about the problem and somehow convinced her to let her join on the mission.
Ability Scores: 10, 16, 12, 15, 8, 15
Why was she chosen is merged in with the backstory
Race: Shifter (She's a Kitsune/Kumiho but she'll stay in her human form for the entire campaign)
Class and path: Bard, College Of Creation
Background: Entertainer (Wanted to pick acolyte as well but since I can't have 2 backgrounds...)
Backstory: Yurime wound up in the Land of Aldhahab after fleeing through a portal from her homeworld away from her torturers. Although she initally wanted food and a place to stay, she became famous for successfully treating millions of patients with supposedly incurable diseases through her magical songs and aided people affected by the drought near Okhiti river. Her added abilities to shapeshift into a nine-talied fox, create magical items and make beautiful performances inside and outside of her temple led to the mistaken rumour that she was as a goddess. Now living her undercover life as a priestess where she performs and heals, Yuri lives a double life as a performing healer whilst simultaneously investigating what is causing the desert world to slowly wither away.
Reason why she might be called upon by the queen to help solve her problems:
For the past decade or so in her spare time, Yurime has attempted to investigate, without any success-
1- Why the Okhiti river has been drying up even though she had made plans with the other leaders to help improve its waterways in a really dry climate
2- What were those strange sounds inside the pyramids even though she literally could find anything other than sacred treasures that were completely foreign to her
3- What magic is being used to make the sphinxes restless by analysing their behaviour
She kept doing this on her own accord and keeps track of her current progress in her own journal whilst reporting to the pharaoh on what she has found. Partially, she is also seeking to improve her skills to later fight for her people in her homeworld. She fears that if this desert world is destroyed, she will have to spend months finding some other world or universe to seek refuge and know that all of the lives she had saved and delighted would have been in vain.

(Relatively simple at the moment. Happy to expand this if needed) Borax has served in the ancient tombs for as long as he can remember. While he is an able warrior, he is also called to serve in a more spiritual way as well, assisting those who come to mourn and helping them find meaning through creation and rebirth.
Reason why you might be called upon by the queen to help solve her problems.
Guarding the tomb of one of her close family members, a possible link between the dead family member and the current situation. Possibly overheard discussions from people using the tombs as a place to conspire or discuss current issues.
Backstory: As is often the case, the younger sons of the nobility must find their own ways in life with only the influence of family to help along. When one is the 5th son of a very minor noble on the outer reaches of civilization there is little even of that, and prospects of inheritance are hopeless. As such Roi spent his time, when not in lessons, in the wild lands of their small barony(?), sometimes disappearing for days as he grew older. So long ago it has become almost a family myth, the Senna family was powerful and touched by the Gods and moved in the circles of power. But a divine spark is not so easily extinguished, and so, one day after Roi had turned 16 and was in the wilds with his youngest sister of 7, she fell from a tree and hit her head on a rock. Despairing of her life and wishing the power to staunch the flow of blood, the ancient spark ignited curing her wound. She, of course, had no memory of the extent of her injury; merely a small blooding cut. Roi kept his discovery a secret, believing it would be his path in the world once he became on adult, telling only the priest.
Ability Roll: 131115111214
Queen's Call: Though the priest did not tell Roi's parents, he did tell his superiors and word of his ability and the old family story reached the Queen. Surely, he was touched by the Gods and would add the Gods blessings onto the endeavor she thought. As for Roi, he was ever a good and dutiful subject.
Rohar was born into captivity, her mother and father kept their relationship hidden as slaves. She was born in slave quarters and was hidden by her parents for about 5 years in a tiny room unknown to the owners. Being a child, even one born to the hardships of slavery, Rohar wanted to venture and one day she was not hiding in her secret room when her parents owners came by. When the masters of the slaves found her, they killed both her parents on the spot and put Rohar to work. Easy work at first, take water to the other workers, clean up, mend clothes. But as Rohar got bigger, and stronger, they put her to work doing more and more menial tasks, Eventually she ended up working to dredge the river Okhiti. She has never known freedom, only heard about it, and she wants it. she is full of rage and anger, she sometimes can barely control her animal nature so she works as hard as she can to burn her energy, making her stronger and more determined every day. Rohar is tired of being a slave and would commit her life and soul to anyone that would grant he the opportunity to be free.

** Kheprina (Or someone that can speak for her) would offer her the freedom she has desperately wanted her whole life. She would be very willing to help her handpicked group of adventurers and warriors. She would need to be given weapons, armor, etc. as a sign of trust. So that would be left up to the DM as to how I am equipped.
Are you allowing Critical Role stuff for your campaign? I'm thinking of having my half-orc be Way of the Cobalt Soul, though I'm not completely sure. So I wanted to know what are your thoughts about it.
Backstory: Phoebe is the daughter of a farming family along the banks of the Okhiti River. They grow corn and tap the river to help irrigate their lands. They also herd sheep for wool. When she is not doing her chores, Phoebe is always tinkering and building stuff to make farming a little easier, when they work. She also enjoys exploring the world around her. She is an intelligent, young girl who is socially awkward. She prefers dismantling and reverse engineering things to find out how stuff works and investigating the world around her.
When the Okhiti started drying up, it was Phoebe’s ingenuity and creativity that allowed her family to continue to tap the Okhiti as it slowly turned to mud. She built a series of mechanical pumps and filters to supply water to her father’s fields; however, Phoebe soon realized that using mechanical contraptions would only work so long before the Okhiti dried up. She received the blessings of her parents to leave the farm and find out the source of this mystery and to hopefully make the river flow again and save their farmstead.
Reason why you might be called upon by the Queen: As a farmer on the Okhiti River, Phoebe has managed to continue irrigate her father’s farm. Her problem-solving skills have caught the Queen’s attention to help solve this mystery.
Monk 1/ Fighter 1/ Barbarian Goliath designed to be a barehanded fighter. Kophyn will pick up weapons if they must but have trained themselves to be able to take on even the most fearsome of opponents with just their skin and fists…
Kophyn came from a family of workers. The strong build and resiliency of his Goliath parents were put to the test bending their backs to some of the harshest and heaviest work in the Land of Aldhahab.Kophyn grew from infant to boy to young adult proud of the hard work and labors he parents put in to provide for him but determined to find a better life for himself.
Kophyn learned how to fight believing that such skill could be a route to a more prosperous lifestyle. He studied with the learned and the brawler, the professional and the brutally violent.Kophyn learned the skills and techniques to hold his own against any warrior through tactics and technique, not just brute strength.Though strength he did have…
The fighting pits and gladiator shows is where he began his rise.He was by no means undefeated but no fighter really looking for challenges ever is.But his unique style of eschewing weapons and fighting barehanded even versus the most armed and armored opponents drew Kophyn quite the following and acclaim. He felt his stature was on the rise over what had been available to his parents…
One day Pharaoh Kheprina herself witnessed one of his fights. The fates were in Kophyn’s favor that day for it was a long and brutal match which made his barehanded brawling style all the more impressive. The pharaoh too looked kindly upon Kophyn that day, soon he was called out from the ranks of the gladiators and placed within the ranks of Pharaoh Kheprina’s personal guards. It seemed his penchant and skill fighting unarmored and without weapon was seen as a valuable asset for when Pharaoh wished for protection while still projecting the image of one relaxed and without worry. Kophyn was honored and humbled to be so selected and dedicated his life to keepingPharaoh Kheprina safe from all harm…

Oh yeah, when I made this, I debated about whether to consider half orcs as slaves or mistreated members of the working class. Completely up to you which one you would like to choose for your character, either way they're going to be heavily disliked lol.

Borax
Warforged Forge Domain Cleric
Background: Acolyte
Backstory:
(Relatively simple at the moment. Happy to expand this if needed)
Borax has served in the ancient tombs for as long as he can remember.

As is often the case, the younger sons of the nobility must find their own ways in life with only the influence of family to help along.

Reason why you might be called upon by the queen to help solve her problems.
Half orc monk Khaddim- Lost Mine of Phandelver (modern setting), Variant human ranger Frekor- The Darness Below, Half elf bard Callon, Aasimar life domain cleric/blood hunter Idris- Hunt for the 7, Tiefling warlock Charis- Ghosts of Saltmarsh, Goliath fighter Garrett- Ghosts of Saltmarsh
Race: Human (Variant)
Class: Artificer
Subclass: Artillerist
Background: Custom/Farmer (Cloistered Scholar/Hermit)

Kophyn - https://ddb.ac/characters/80119865/aoTaP0Monk 1/ Fighter 1/ Barbarian Goliath designed to be a barehanded fighter. Kophyn will pick up weapons if they must but have trained themselves to be able to take on even the most fearsome of opponents with just their skin and fists…Kophyn came from a family of workers. The strong build and resiliency of his Goliath parents were put to the test bending their backs to some of the harshest and heaviest work in the Land of Aldhahab. Kophyn grew from infant to boy to young adult proud of the hard work and labors he parents put in to provide for him but determined to find a better life for himself.Kophyn learned how to fight believing that such skill could be a route to a more prosperous lifestyle. He studied with the learned and the brawler, the professional and the brutally violent. Kophyn learned the skills and techniques to hold his own against any warrior through tactics and technique, not just brute strength. Though strength he did have…The fighting pits and gladiator shows is where he began his rise. He was by no means undefeated but no fighter really looking for challenges ever is. But his unique style of eschewing weapons and fighting barehanded even versus the most armed and armored opponents drew Kophyn quite the following and acclaim. He felt his stature was on the rise over what had been available to his parents…One day Pharaoh Kheprina herself witnessed one of his fights. Kophyn was honored and humbled to be so selected and dedicated his life to keeping Pharaoh Kheprina safe from all harm…We're doing one small murder-y thing for a bigger, better reason. The ends justify the means.
