Greetings and salutations, ladies, gentlemen, boys, girls, neithers, boths, and in-betweens! Hey. How ya doin'? Good? That's great. Anyways. Ordinarily, I'd move on from this little intro, and begin to describe exactly what type of game I was recruiting for. You know, talk about the world, the premise, et cetera, then I'd have a nice little character application, maybe some links to homebrew if I was feeling spicy. The works.
But!
I'm too lazy to do all that! So, in true Humbug fashion, I've decided to push back all of that stuff, for future me to deal with. Indeed, I am recruiting for a campaign that does not exist! Yet. That's where you come in. As a forever DM, I understand that sometimes, you have something you really want to do in D&D, but have just never had the chance. Maybe it's a character you want to play. Maybe it's a world you want to play in. Maybe it's a narrative you want to follow. But, for whatever reason, you haven't been able to do it.
That's where I swoop in, cape whipping in the wind, fully suited up in my super-speedo and crappy half-mask that doesn't do anything to conceal my identity, to save the day!
That was a whole lot of words, all to lead up to the following statement: I am recruiting for a one-on-one, fully custom-tailored game for one, maybe two people. I've recently gotten into two duet games, one DMed by me and one in which I'm a player, and I've found that I really like the format. It really allows you to make the PC the true main character, and allows you to custom-build a lot of things for them. Fool that I am, I want to take this all the way to the extreme, and fully cater to the wants and needs of my player, to play the game that both of us would love to play.
Anyways, now that all of that is through, here's the part you're really interested in. I don't have a typical application, because you're obviously not going to be submitting a character to a campaign that doesn't exist yet. Instead, just send the following:
Time Zone: (what's your time zone?) Experience: (what's your experience with D&D, as well as other TTRPGs, as well as your PbP experience? Would you consider yourself a beginner, intermediate, or experienced player?) Your Wish: (what is one thing that you've always wanted to do in D&D? What's something that would just be a ton of fun? This can be literally anything, I would consider myself very experienced in DMing insane stuff, and have a lot of weird homebrew systems sitting around, so don't worry about being too wacky. Sci-fi, Wild West, Noir, Paleolithic, I've done all these and more. Don't worry if you don't have this 100% figured out, just a vague approximation is fine. This doesn't have to be your final answer if you're chosen, I just want an insight into your mind. We'll figure things out.) Pick a number between 1 and 20: (This has absolutely nothing to do with the recruitment process, but do it. Trust me, it's incredibly important.)
I'll probably leave this up for around a day, maybe two, and pick one or two people (or maybe three if three of you really catch my eye) to torment.
Oh, also, if you're in any of the other games I'm DMing, you can still 100% sign up, I just get more chances to torment you <3

Time Zone: Roughly European time since I’m on a partial night shift, but I typically post multiple times a day at various hours :)
Experience: I played tabletop D&D very briefly a long time ago, but have since gotten into PBPs, and I would consider myself an intermediate player I think? I’ve played all kinds of campaigns, both homebrew and official content, but mostly on Discord so I don’t have much of a posting history on this site :)
Your Wish: I have three types of D&D experiences I’ve always dreamed of having but that are hard to do in anything other than a 1x1, or maybe 1x1+:
Wish 1: Situations where the player, not just the character, can’t fully trust the reality they are experiencing. This could be due to reality-distorting magical effects, Westworld-style see the spoiler, time travel, etc. I feel like this has a lot of opportunity for amazing stories and experiences, but can’t be fully explored in a group setting because at a minimum the other players will always need to be “real”.
Wish 2: Really exploring how precognitive abilities can shape a campaign, like with a Divination Wizard. In regular campaigns it’s hard to really go deeply into precognition because it’s hard to predict OOC where things will end up IC. But in a 1x1+ that’s more tailored and focussed it feels like it should be easier to set these kind of abilities up, and has a lot of potential for interesting breadcrumbs and revelations in the story.
Wish 3: Exploring just how wild Wild Magic can get. I’ve always wanted to play a character that really leans into randomness. Like a Wild Mage who surges much more than normal, and maybe learns only random spells on levelling, for example. Again, it’s hard to do this in a normal adventure because there are other players to worry about, but might be very interesting for a 1x1.
Pick a number: 5

Edit: putting the Westworld reference in spoilers, just in case.
Time Zone: Pacific Time. I can typically make 1-2 posts every day and more on Monday, Friday and Saturday.
Experience: I've been playing D&D for the past 8 years on and off. I've been on both the DMing and player side of the game; with a strong preference as a player. I've been doing PBP (both on Discord and here) for a little over half a year and have been loving it. I would consider myself an experienced player.
Your Wish: I would love to play a campaign that uses the 5e Gestalt rules. I love the sheer amount of options 5e gives us to customize and create our characters, and Gestalt rules crank it up to eleven. In an average game with 4-6 players, I could see this getting out of hand and hard to balance encounters but I think it has potential in a 1x1+ campaign. As far as campaign settings go, I don't have anything really set in stone but preferably high fantasy.
Pick a number: Gonna leave this one up to the RNG gods -> 14
Time Zone: AEST ... so ... everything but US daylight time. Experience: intermediate to experienced (know 5e pretty well, and have done PbP for a while now) Your Wish: Something that has the full heroic span, that leads from lowly levels clearing sewers though to grand strategy and politics at the national/planar/multiverse level. Something that builds a connection between the world and the character, not something that creates a character who is a tourist blown by the winds of fate (at least not always). Pick a number between 1 and 20: 13. 'cos it's a lucky number.
Time Zone: EST Experience: I've been playing dnd for a few years now. I am almost always a dm, but really want to play in a campaign. I don't really have time, so I'm trying to find a good pbp game. Your Wish: I've always wanted to have a campaign where the characters live in and run a stronghold, but not with the rules in the DM guide. The official rules are horribble. I've always wanted to have a campaign with a good homebase that is useful and does things other than just be a bunch of bedrooms, but I haven't really found that. Pick a number between 1 and 20: 16

I will protect those I hate. Even ... even if the one I hate most ... is ... myself.
Time Zone: PST Experience: Have been taking part in TTRPGs for 10 years, with D&D taking up 6 of those years. I'm well versed in online, PbP and general free forms of RP, and have no issue filling a role that might need to be filled, be it in a party role, or RP wise~ Your Wish: Recently joined a game that had to be cut short, and put a lot of love into that character. More than anything just would like to bring them to life in a world where they can see their story play out. Beyond that, am always a fan of party investments, things like a stronghold or ship that the party can return to and put resources into.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Thanks Humbug! As a forever-DM for my in-person games, I've enjoyed pbp as a chance to be a player. (I also have many, many characters that I've lovingly built only to end up as NPCs...) So here I go!
Time Zone: EST / UTC-4
Experience: I started with D&D during the pandemic (so a little over 2 years ago now). As the most engaged player, I became DM by default - we ran The Sunless Citadel and have since started another campaign loosely based around Candlekeep Mysteries - but unfortunately, our game is starting to slow down as we’ve returned to work. Between those two adventures we’ve been slowly learning the lore of the Forgotten Realms, and have really only explored the Sword Coast, but I recently started Wild Beyond the Witchlight with another group, which as been a lot of fun and going well.
In the pbp group I’m a part of, we started Call of the Netherdeep earlier this year and I went in pretty hard on the Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount. After our DM had to drop out we pivoted to a smaller adventure in Wildemount (Tides of Retribution). I've also pbp'd in a couple of homebrew one-shots, to varying degrees of enjoyment.
My Witchlight group is still in our honeymoon phase, so we just bought some more material which I'm digging into now - Ravenloft, Strixhaven, Spelljammer, and The Radiant Citadel. *insert Kylo Ren "MORE" meme*
Overall, I’d consider myself an intermediate player! Definitely still learning, but I'm pretty comfortable with the basic rules / mechanics and general lore.
Your Wish: As a relative newbie, I would love to play a high-powered character; or at least get to the point where a character reachers their "trailer" moment, which hasn't quite happened in any of my nascent games yet. Here are a few of my ideas in logline form--
Human Warlock / The Fathomless - Pirate captain that ends up being able to warg into Godzilla to defeat an armada.
Half-Elf Fighter / Champion - A cage-fighter that overcomes her masters in a fight for freedom.
Variant Human Cleric / Death Domain - A fanatic raised in the faith that begins to have doubts after an encounter with an outsider.
World-building is my favorite part of the game, so if picked, it'd be great to get your thoughts!
Pick a number between 1 and 20: No risk no reward --> 1

Time Zone: PST Experience: I'd definitely call myself a beginner, big pbp fan specifically. Your Wish: I've always wanted to play in a thick, cramped city straight out of the victorian age. Something kind of like steampunk, but more grounded in reality. Think London in the mid 1850's, but with magic. I think there are a lot of things you could do with that setting. Whether it be business, politics, or even in the mafia, it could be a really interesting thing to play through. Pick a number between 1 and 20: 20
Time Zone: CST Experience: I'm very experienced with D&D, I've been playing since before 5e came out, I've got hundreds of hours on both sides of the screen. However, I'm very inexperienced with PbP. I've only played in a few short games, and none on DnD Beyond. Your Wish: Okay, so I've always loved the idea of playing, like, a young god? You've got no worshippers and very little power and throughout the game, you use your actions to grow your following and begin shaping the world? I feel like there's so much you could do with that narratively. Digging into what it means to be divine, exploring the gods' relationships with mortals and the world? I've always been to scared to field the idea in a normal campaign, though, because of the narrative weight that sort of thing would have. Pick a number between 1 and 20: 11

Time Zone: CDT (But I work overnights) Experience: I’ve been playing and DMing D&D for a year. PBP for a few months now. I’m a beginner but I know the game fairly well. Your Wish: I started a Planescape campaign earlier this year but DM’s schedule changed. They leaned fully into the weird that can come from interplanar shenanigans. And fight a beholder, they’re classic and I haven’t had the chance.
Pick a number between 1 and 20: Leaving it to the Dice Gods 13
Time Zone: Pacific Experience: Started with the Blue Box basic, familiar with 1 & 2 E, Hackmaster, Pathfinder & moderately familiar with 5E.
Due to a hectic schedule play by post is preferred. Your Wish:
1. (Simple) Work up my eccentric "Queen Eclipsa" themed necromancer.
2. (Complex, ie, more work). Apotheosis for the 2E character I'd worked up to 18th Rogue/ 19th wizard.
I've been toying with the idea of making her an archfey like Tasha in "Wild Beyond Witchlight", but it would be nice to have a proper send-off.
Maybe she has to collect artifacts & drain their power (or something else) to become an archfey or demigoddess. She starts with the artifact of a (male) fertility deity.
Time Zone: GMT -4 Experience: I'm fairly new to Dnd and PbP, I'm currently in 2 campaigns that started a few weeks ago. But I am experienced in roleplaying in writing for more than 4 years, so it won't be that hard for me to roleplay. Your Wish: I've always wanted to play a campaign were I'm not the good guy. There are 2 versions of that idea: 1. Either I'm evil (not the "I'm the big boss" kind of evil, but not the hero). 2. The decisions are morally grey, but I'm definitely not the "nice and good nature hero". Maybe I am the one who will save the day, but I'm willing to do what it takes to get there.
I also like the idea of a campaign were there is a conflict and you have to decide which side you are on (both are not in the right, but not in the wrong either). But I'm aware that theme is better for a campaign with more people (more drama and the posibility that you end up fighting angainst each other), so that's more of a cool idea that would be neat for a future campaign of yours. Pick a number between 1 and 20: 17

Hey, Humbug. I'm really a lot interested. I have a character I played at 12th level for a one-shot that I loved, and I'd love nothing better than to see how she got that way (or ended up somewhere else!).
Time Zone: US Central (GMT-5 currently)
Experience: I am really pretty experienced. I started playing in the early 80's as a kid, and I took a break after 3rd edition, and came back for 5th. I have DM'ed, both here and IRL, but I prefer playing. I am a role-player by choice. As such, my wishes revolve around playing a particular character I came up with and have not had the chance to explore.
My Wish: Fionula Nobody is a character who started life as a down and out thief, recruited by a gang, who on her first job fell through a warehouse roof and right into a cult's misguided attempt to compel a greater being from another plane to do their bidding. Her sudden entrance messed up the ritual, and the planar being got loose, obliterating all of the cultists, but when it came upon her broken, dying body (it was a long fall), it saw something... useful, and made a pact with her in exchange for her life. Now, she serves as this creature's fetch, finding objects, magic items, people. It's a story that could involve all kinds of weirdness, plane-hopping, spelljammer, the ethereal plane, the Feywild, or all of the above and then some. And through it all, she's trying to get out of the deal, while also becoming a little more unhinged as time goes on. She is accompanied by a bedraggled familiar who hates her, but works for her patron, and thus has to do her bidding unless she does something wrong, which he'd like to catch her at, but which she never does. (In game terms, she's a warlock of the Tome with a fiend patron, her boon leading her to be a Swiss army knife of spells useful for finding and catching people/things.) She's sassy and fun and a little crazy and feisty and reckless.
Number: let the RNG gods decide! 9

ey/em/eirs, or they/them works, too (just not he). Role-playing since that keep on those borderlands. Here's my D&D stuff. I love it so.
Time Zone: US East Coast Experience: I would say experienced player, Ive been playing for 22 years now, started with 3E and then 3.5E, took a break and then started Pathfinder, this would be my second 5E game ever, I am usually the DM and am looking to play a character for once Your Wish: A couple of settings Ive always wanted to do, first is kingdom building - starting at the ground level, becoming involved in a guild or organization, going from thug to leader or from adventurer to local lord to ruler of small nation, very much like the Pathfinder Kingmaker module if you are familiar with it. Other idea is based off of Mass Effect: Andromeda and would be more for Spelljammer, helping to explore and colonize new worlds. Pick a number between 1 and 20: 17
Experience: Over a year of playing and DMing Dnd campaigns
Your Wish: An adventure with intrigue. Are we working for the true heir or a usurper. When did we become a pawn in someones nefarious game. Another setting would be a moral dilemma where major decisions have pros and cons with unknown consequences. Of course with the usual 3 pillars
Bwa hahahaha I am taking over and making duets a thing!!!!!
Editing to add:
Time Zone: EST!
Experience: I am going to be super lazy and say "well you know"
Your Wish: This is my thoughts... I would love to play a game where monsters and stuff are kinda rare, but to play a character who is a monster hunter in a world of humans. So like low fantasy. I guess it would be like Supernatural, the television show? I've only seen two seasons. But! Yea, just a setting anywhere in any genre except sci-fi -- space mostly, weird west would probably be fine! Or something that feels like Devil May Cry -- action packed and mostly about kicking ass and doing cool stuff and explosions!
So yeah, something like Supernatural or Devil May Cry or some combination of the two. Or even Evil Dead. I don't want them in universe, probably, unless I can romance dad-bod Dante...

Experience: Started with the Blue Box basic, familiar with 1 & 2 E, Hackmaster, Pathfinder & moderately familiar with 5E.

Experience: I'm fairly new to Dnd and PbP, I'm currently in 2 campaigns that started a few weeks ago.

Half orc monk Khaddim- Lost Mine of Phandelver (modern setting), Variant human ranger Frekor- The Darness Below, Half elf bard Callon, Aasimar life domain cleric/blood hunter Idris- Hunt for the 7, Tiefling warlock Charis- Ghosts of Saltmarsh, Goliath fighter Garrett- Ghosts of Saltmarsh
Campaign links for Game Log access because DDB has abandoned the forum dice roller, apparently.
Radiant Citadel by cbaer8 ~•~ Stormwreck Isle by Rforrest14 ~•~ Wildspace by Rhanloi ~•~ Rise of Tiamat by SteveThaiBinh ~•~ The Long Road currently by me
I am simply too tired to make a decision tonight, so I'm extending the deadline until tomorrow! Also, bump I guess.

Experience: I would say experienced player, Ive been playing for 22 years now, started with 3E and then 3.5E, took a break and then started Pathfinder, this would be my second 5E game ever, I am usually the DM and am looking to play a character for once
Your Wish: A couple of settings Ive always wanted to do, first is kingdom building - starting at the ground level, becoming involved in a guild or organization, going from thug to leader or from adventurer to local lord to ruler of small nation, very much like the Pathfinder Kingmaker module if you are familiar with it. Other idea is based off of Mass Effect: Andromeda and would be more for Spelljammer, helping to explore and colonize new worlds.
