"We could ask some of the locals if anyone has experienced goblin raids recently, and might have some useful information about what we'll be going up against and where to find them. We could start at the tavern."
"Hold up, hold up!" Calls Barthen from the shop. "I tell ye', it's gettin' harder and harder to remember things. Gundren said summat about meeting him at Stonehill Inn. You could also find a bit of information there, if you get my meaning." He taps his nose knowingly.
The town consists of
forty or fifty simple log buildings, some built on old fieldstone
foundations. More old ruins — crumbling stone walls covered
in ivy and briars — surround the newer houses and shops,
showing how this must have been a much larger town in
centuries past. Most of the newer buildings are set on the
sides of the cart track, which widens into a muddy main
street of sorts as it climbs toward a ruined manor house on a
hillside at the east side of town.
As you approach, you see children playing on the town green
and townsfolk tending to chores or running errands at shops.
Many people look up as you approach, but all return to their
business as you go by.
Some notable locations include Barthen's Provisions, Stonehill Inn, and the Lionshield Coster. Many other shops and quaint locales can also be found amidst the bustling town.
"Thank you Barthen, maybe we'll start there. What do you say lads? Shall we get two birds stoned at once and wet our whistle while gathering information at the Stonehill?"
He says with a wink, seeming quite thirsty.
"This town seems to be thriving, perhaps the goblins haven't invaded for some reason.." he trails off half talking to himself.
After showing my agreement, I follow the rest in and cast a glance around the room. (To speed things up, I will post all my questions now and assume that tannen is asking around)
Does anyone know if Gundren arrived safely?
Have goblins ever attack before?
Who lives in the manor and how much influence does he or she have in the region?
Ragna follows Trombin into the Stonehill inn. He pulls out some coin and then orders a drink. "Lass a drink please, please make sure the ale is of dwarven make"
In the center of town stands a large, newly built roadhouse of fieldstone and rough-hewn timbers. The common room is filled with locals nursing mugs of ale or cider, all of them eyeing you curiously. This is the Stonehill Inn.
A barmaid presently approaches your table. "I don't rightly know about no dwarven drink, but we serve good ale, cider, and mead." She says in response to your questions. "What'll it be?"
People of all shapes and sizes pack the inn, taking their noontide meal. This is a very popular locale for both food and gossip.

"Good afternoon madam, I will take your cider- as cold as possible please! How much for a mug? And what food are you serving today?"
Trombin asks cheerfully, clearly excited for a drink and a meal. He surveys the other patrons and while he is looking at his own friends he is trying to eaves drop on some of the other conversations going on around them.
Grindal grumpily shouts "Bah, bring a pint", finds the grimiest, meanest looking person in the bar and sits down next to/across from them without saying a word.

Grindal finds a moody-looking bear of a man, with a bristling black beard and a sour expression. "An just who in Buglag's name are you?" The man asks before yelling for another mug of ale.

Trombin catches the conversation of two farmers, talking in hushed voices about "Redbrands" .
Presently the barmaid, who introduces herself as Elsa, returns with a cold pint of cider. "You look a fine band. Adventurers, I'll be bound. Have you ever happened upon the name of Daran Edermath? Only he's calling himself an adventurer as well."
Grindal shouts again for a pint and stares sullenly at the man for a moment, before saying "I'm a mean old dwarf, is who I am. Came here looking for some goblins to skewer and you look like the closest thing, ye durned goblin-lookin' human. Ye ever heard of a dwarf named Gundren?"
The man is taken aback by this blunt attack. "Listen ye bearded boar, I don't like being talked to that way. If'n you want to find a goblin, just look in the mirror!"
Elsa, the barmaid, quietly deposits two mugs of strong ale on the table and backs off, wanting no part in this encounter.
"Bahaha, I knew I liked the looks o' ye, ye durned ugly half-orc lookin' goblin lookin' human!"
Grindal downs his mug of ale while staring at the stranger, as if to challenge him, then hands it to the barmaid and says "You! Ye ever hear of a dwarf named Gundren? And bring me another pint, lass!"

I catch the barmaid and ask for a pot of boiling hot water. She gives me a questioning look but takes my money and walks off. I think it best not to mention that I need it for alchemy, lest I get run out of town for witchcraft again (I'm going to flavor my spell slots as potions, no mechanical effect). I scan through a section of my notebook marked "interacting with other people," then find a common looking group to ask my afore mentioned questions to.

Trombin wipes tears from his eyes. He had known Telethin longer than the others so he cried openly.
"Thank you for the kind words Ragna, it is quite dusty around here..." he sniffles.
"It is early, shall we explore town a bit? Get the lay of the land- perhaps we can purchase a map of the region."

Trombin leads the way to the Stonehill Inn and is the first to enter. He takes a look around, hoping to find the barmaid and get a stiff drink.
