(OOC: Okay, I’m going to push ahead, if you want to continue your conversation, I’ll assume it’s happening while you walk to the marketplace.)
The general marketplace has all the standard PHB gear, weapons, and armor. In addition, you notice a potions shop that was closed the last time you visited this area.
Petro’sPotentPotions
A bald, elderly human stands behind the counter, eager to help you. He introduces himself as Petro, the shop’s proprietor. The store is full of various potions and powders, but these are the items that are in your general price range (he has as many of each as you can afford):
PotionofHealing 50gp
You regain 2d4+2 hit points when you drink this potion. The potion's red liquid glimmers when agitated.
PotionofGreaterHealing 150gp
You regain 4d4+2 hit points when you drink this potion. The potion's red liquid glimmers when agitated.
PotionofFireBreath 200gp
After drinking this potion, you can use a bonus action to exhale fire at a target within 30 feet of you. The target must make a DC 13 Dexterity saving throw, taking 4d6 fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. The effect ends after you exhale the fire three times or when 1 hour has passed. This potion's orange liquid flickers, and smoke fills the top of the container and wafts out whenever it is opened.
Keoghtom’sOintment 200gp
This glass jar, 3 inches in diameter, contains 1d4 + 1 doses of a thick mixture that smells faintly of aloe. The jar and its contents weigh 1/2 pound. As an action, one dose of the ointment can be swallowed or applied to the skin. The creature that receives it regains 2d8 + 2 hit points, ceases to be poisoned, and is cured of any disease.
PotionofClimbing 100gp
When you drink this potion, you gain a climbing speed equal to your walking speed for 1 hour. During this time, you have advantage on Strength (Athletics) checks you make to climb. The potion is separated into brown, silver, and gray layers resembling bands of stone. Shaking the bottle fails to mix the colors.
OilofSlipperiness 250gp
This sticky black unguent is thick and heavy in the container, but it flows quickly when poured. The oil can cover a Medium or smaller creature, along with the equipment it's wearing and carrying (one additional vial is required for each size category above Medium). Applying the oil takes 10 minutes. The affected creature then gains the effect of a freedom of movement spell for 8 hours.
Alternatively, the oil can be poured on the ground as an action, where it covers a 10-foot square, duplicating the effect of the grease spell in that area for 8 hours.
PotionofWaterBreathing 180gp
You can breathe underwater for 1 hour after drinking this potion. Its cloudy green fluid smells of the sea and has a jellyfish-like bubble floating in it.
DrowPoison 100gp
This poison is typically made only by the drow, and only in a place far removed from sunlight. A creature subjected to this poison must succeed on a DC 13 Constitution saving throw or be poisoned for 1 hour. If the saving throw fails by 5 or more, the creature is also unconscious while poisoned in this way. The creature wakes up if it takes damage or if another creature takes an action to shake it awake.
PotionofPoison 100gp
This concoction looks, smells, and tastes like a potion of healing or other beneficial potion. However, it is actually poison masked by illusion magic. An identify spell reveals its true nature.
If you drink it, you take 3d6 poison damage, and you must succeed on a DC 13 Constitution saving throw or be poisoned. At the start of each of your turns while you are poisoned in this way, you take 3d6 poison damage. At the end of each of your turns, you can repeat the saving throw. On a successful save, the poison damage you take on your subsequent turns decreases by 1d6. The poison ends when the damage decreases to 0.
PotionofGrowth 250gp
When you drink this potion, you gain the "enlarge" effect of the enlarge/reduce spell for 1d4 hours (no concentration required). The red in the potion's liquid continuously expands from a tiny bead to color the clear liquid around it and then contracts. Shaking the bottle fails to interrupt this process.
(Natasha goes around the weapons shop, looking for replacement darts with a similar effect as her tranquilizer darts. If she can't find any, she'll purchase some regular blow darts and buy a Drow Potion to dip the darts in. Natasha also picks up 1 Potion of Healing.)
Jacob is just going to grab a potion of healing, and mill about seeming mildly irritated to be in the market for overly long and finding nothing that piques his interest otherwise.

Jacob Bray - The Call of Lon-Dia, Human Bloodhunter 3
Stone walks up to the rest of his squad wearing his new armor. "What do you guys think of my new armor? It provides a bit more protection than my last piece. Who knew when we were on that luxury airship that we would end up in so many battles? I figure its better to be prepared than sorry."
He looks at the items they have purchased. "Are you guys almost ready to head out. If we had more time I would like to spend several days exploring this great city. It must have quite the criminal justice system to maintain the order in such a large city. However, since we have someplace to go, I would like to head out soon, so that we can cover as much ground as possible before it turns dark."
"Before we go perhaps we should ask the locals about anything we should expect on the roads. Perhaps they might be able to point us to safer roads and tell us about places to avoid."
Penelope will look around for a guard or some kind of traveler and ask about the area.
Penelope: After finding all the supplies you were looking for, you approach a blue Dragonborn guard and enquire about the road from Sala to Valtoria. He informs you that it’s reasonably safe as long as you travel with a caravan. The highway thieves are only after easy pickings. After quickly examining your gear, the way you carry yourself, and your companions, he adds that a small group of adventurers can probably handle anything those filthy bandits can throw at you. “The most important thing is that you stay on the road. These wildlands are filled all manner of beasties.” He smiles a sharp toothed grin at you; you can tell that he doesn’t get to speak to his own kind very often. ”Is there anything else?”
(OOC: If there’s anything else you guys want to do in town, just let me know and we’ll retcon it in. If not, we’ll move this along.)
Having thoroughly scoured the marketplace for all the gear you will need on your trip, you all head out of the city and north on the road to Valtoria. According to your map, it appears the Hall of Everforge is about half way between Sala and Valtoria. The trip to the Hall looks to be around 200 miles, or 8 days travel.
(OOC: I’ll be rolling a few encounter checks, once during the day, and one at night, per day.)
Is there anything you’d like to do during the first day of the trip?
Penelope simply follows along the group, conversing with the others as they go. She eventually starts to tell the group about her Uncle Aasgar, a brass scaled dragonborn, who helped to raise her after her magic manifested. Penelope speaks so proudly of her Uncle and his tales it's easy to tell that he means a lot to her and she's happy to tell any of the party who will listen about he and his party's adventures. She'll tell them about a few of the adventures he and his party had been on. The raid on a bandit camp that had been terrorizing some far off city. A daring rescue of a lawmaster's daughter from foul demon. The cleansing of an ancient tree after it had been corrupted by evil otherworldly creatures.
Jacob mainly listens, doesn't talk a whole lot but isn't particularly surly or anything. He eats sparingly and his military background is obvious in small ways - fastidious and methodical with his prep, pack, unpack, etc... tries to make himself helpful overall when needed, and stay out of the way when he's not.

Day 1 Encounter Check: 11
You complete the first day of the trip without encountering anyone or thing. You all find a spot where you can rest for the night. It looks like a well worn place used by many travelers of this road in the past. Will you be taking turns on watch?
