"Nonsense, the key is right..." The centaur walks over to the shelves, and looks a little surprised to notice that the key isn't in the keyhole. He begins reaching to check around the chest, then pulls his hand back as he thinks about your warning about traps. "My wife had the key with her when she left a little while ago. It's strange that she hasn't come back yet... and it is true what the boy says, she has not been herself today. - Lichen... he was just at lunch! Why do you think he is missing?" He glances at his nephew and his young son, and bearlock's detective snout, and deflates a little. "Of course, you may look within the chest. Nothing but clothing and keepsakes from my wife's family in there"
As far as you know, Saffi is still with Tesfayeand Eliza on the West Branch.
Lam gets the message from Cyclence and takes off to the South Branch to go find his friends. When he gets there, he first does a double take at his bear friend. Then he looks to all of them for directions on how he can help.
Seeing Lamarrive, Saoirseopens her mouth to ask what was going on on their side, and specially, why in the world isn't Hermes with him. But with the centaur family around, she thinks again, steps away from the centaur father and moves towards Lamand Sha, telling them in low voice:
-I think Lichen, and perhaps this centaur's wife, might be inside the chest. And that Poniros, who seems to have impersonated them both, has the key. Well, better said, - and she says this looking towards Lam, who doesn't know this detail - the key is in Poniros' body has it. Please, go get it. I'll stay with Bear-lock and this family.
Returning to stand next to both bear and chest, she tries to reply the centaur without revealing too much, as saying the wrong words might scare not only the older centaur, but the younger ones:
- Our friends will be back in no time and hopefully with a means to open the chest. I'll explain everything when this is over, I promise. Now, please, stay away just in case - when the centaurs do this, she'll turn to Bear-lock and say - Shall we look for traps just in case?
(OOC: Not sure who should roll to investigate for traps? Perhaps the humanoid instead of the bear? Can the humanoid roll at advantage if the beear helps? Will leave two separate rolls just in case. Inv#1: 4 / Inv#2: 2. Lol. A trap? What is a trap? Never heard that word before.)
Lam raises his eyebrows when Saoirse implies that Poniros is dead. He feels a slight weight lift from himself- if there really was just the two doppelgängers, then they should no longer actively be under threat and sabotage. He watches Sha take off running towards the body of Poniros, and dutifully follows Sha at a quite slower pace.
While trotting after Sha, Lam notices a few of the locals marvelling at the Tabaxi who has been sprinting back and forth across the village for a few minutes now. "Somebody has a case of the zoomies," he hears an elf say quietly, prompting a soft, slightly conspiratorial chuckle from their halfling friend. It is racial humour, though there is not a drop of malice or ill will in it. When Lam arrives in the pantry, Sha has already knelt at Poniros' body and discovered a few things on him:
A vial of basic poison; two very well-maintained and balanced throwing daggers; a key wrought of dark iron with an intricate design on the handle; and a ring worn on his right hand, similar to the ones that Vince, Felix, and Ignacio used to escape not so long ago.
The locals are actively avoiding the pantry - people don't have much experience or comfort with violent death here. There's not exactly a system in place for who's going to clean up this mangled, half-melted doppelganger corpse.
Saoirse, on the other hand, has a less effective search. She tries to carefully examine the area around the chest for anything that could be a trap, and Bearlock takes a step closer, perhaps to help sniff something out. However, when the warm breath from his snout brushes touches her unprepared skin, she suddenly jerks upward in surprise and over-tensed reflexes, jostling the shelves. A wooden doll shaped like a centaur falls from a shelf at human head-hight, and lands hard enough that the doll breaks in two at the connection between man-half and horse-half. The little boy notices the sound, sees the broken doll, and immediately starts crying loudly. "Eso-so-so era mi-mi favorito!!!"His father rushes over to comfort him, speaking softly in Elvish. He turns to you as well, and addresses you in common. "Don't worry. He always says it was his favorite when a thing is missing or broken. It is not so special, his mother can make another when she gets back." Despite his attempt to hide it, it is clear that he is irritated with you. The older cousin stands around awkwardly, not really knowing what his role in this situation should be.
"Th-th-that one was m-m-my favorite!"
It doesn't seem like there are any traps, if that's any consolation.
After the accident with the toy when he startled Saoirse, Bearlock decides it best to just sit quietly until Sha and Lam return. He toys with the idea of returning to his normal form, but having depleted all his resources he decides to stay as a bear for the time being, just in case.
While he waits, he closes his eyes and tries to meditate. Everything had happened so quickly, but now things had calmed down a little he finally has a chance to process the feeling of being nearly killed whilst a horse. He wonders at his instinctive reaction to turn into a bear rather than trust in his starry form.
He looks over to Saoirse, who had also taken a terrible beating.
"Are you ok?", he asks telepathically, cocking his head to the side as he looks upon her. "What just happened....it was....a lot".
Sha scoops up everything he finds including the ring & poison. As he looks at the incredulous bypasses, he looks at the body then up at the gawkers, “I’ll be right back to take care of this.” He motions to the horrid corpse. Then zoom he’s off to the centaur family chest hopefully with the key.
Not knowing how to react, the blood hunter simply stands still listening to the irritated tone in the father's voice and looking disheartened at the crying kid. If that day hadn't already been painful enough, she had to go and make a child cry. When a moment passes, she turns her back on them and seeing that Bear-lock has decided to sit quietly, Saoirsedecides to do exactly the same.
Were it not because they are in Village Tree, and wildshaped druids are a common view there, it would be funny to see a genasi and a bear sitting together. Specially when the first begins to talk quietly to the latter as if it was the most normal thing to do.
- I feel ... awful? And not just because I'm phisically drained. I just can't believe everything that has happened in such short time ... and in this place! Everything was perfectly fine here. And now Rhys is gone, no one trusts each other anymore (especially not us), we've even left a dead body in the pantry. And just because two doppelgangers infiltrated Village Tree? TWO? What the hell, Hemlock? How do we even stand a chance against everything else?
She stops, rubs her temples and then continues.
- I've been in a lot of pain today, but do you know what hurts me the most? What you said a moment ago: that we have to leave for good. I can't help but feel defeated, to be honest.
Even if she has said all that, Saoirse looks at her bear friend, which makes her remember something. So she adds:
- I will say one thing though: you were amazing today. Really, absolutely amazing, Hemlock. We will have to repeat the warhorse maneuver sometime.
(OOC: Let's imagine she's whispering. It was too much text to be comfortable to read with a smaller font!)
Lam stays behind and stares at the corpse of Poniros, seeing if there is some way he could at least pick it up and take it out of here.
Would it be possible for Lam to pick this up without leaving a terrible mess from the melted parts? Can he look at it to see? He doesn’t know where he plans to take it- just has the instinct to do this one thing to help.
Bearlock's shoulders slump as he lets out a big sigh, air expelling from his nostrils at quite a pace as Saoirse says how deflated she feels. The compliment she gives at the end helps him to perk up slightly, especially the thought of teaming up again as Horselock and mount.
He is silent for a few moments before he replies into her mind.
"It can be the hardest thing in the world to care enough to put the well being of others before your own. To do what is right when other paths seem far more appealing. Take heart Saoirse, for you are the most courageous person I have ever met. You inspire us all to be better, to do better", he says, his large bear head nodding slowly.
"The doppelgangers are here because we stood up to Vince. Frederico was hurt because we stood up to Strixwell. Because we protected those that needed it. It may have had terrible consequences, but we should feel proud of our actions. Yes, I believe that our presence here puts the village in danger, and that we must leave to protect it. But I hope that one day we can return, once the world is safe from the likes of Vince and Strixwell".
A low growl starts in the back of his throat unbidden, and it takes a moment to bring his bear like instincts back under control.
"I don't know what is in the chest, but Frederico lives and the doppelgangers are gone. We even managed to free Saffi and make an alliance with Captain Jonah today. We must draw strength from each other and allow the Stars to guide our way, no matter how difficult the path".
The fire genasi takes a moment to process Hemlock's words. Then, after letting out a long breath, she says:
- You are right. You are very right. Thank the stars, as you say, that we have each other. We make a damn fine team, right? - smiling slightly, she adds -We'll keep at it.
Saoirsethen leans a little towards the bear and chuckles:
- This shape is pretty comfy to lean on, you know?
"I will have to take your word for that", Hemlock replies whilst looking down at his arms and body covered in a thick layer of fur. "I am still getting used to being able to change forms, but I like this one. Its sense of smell is much more sensitive than my own, and it is strong and can move quickly. But I guess being comfy to lean on is also a positive", he adds with a mental chuckle.
Picking up the bulk of Poniros' body is simple enough, though a little bit of half-melted doppelganger flesh does stick to the floor. It's not clear where to put it though... local custom is to bury the dead along with seeds of their favorite plants or trees, and rejoin the cycle. You don't know whether that would be appropriate for this stranger. There's not really any area for trash, as the only waste the village produces is biological, and that either composts in the latrine, or in some composting crates near the tree's trunk. Poniros' flesh feels strangely spongey and flexible. You may be able to squeeze the corpse down... that's unsettling to consider. But at the very least, you can easily move the body into a less in-the-way spot and cover it with a cloth. He isn't heavy.
Cylence probably knows what to do. After all, he's got Hermes' corpse to deal with, and he's much more experienced with local custom. (and seemingly with violence, as well. Hermes' execution was... well, it clearly wasn't the first time Cylence has ended a life.)
Sha returns to Hemlock and Saoirse with the key, and I'll just assume that Lam arrives shortly after.
The centaurs are playing with the little boy, who's already stopped crying, and doing their best to ignore the facts that you all are gathering around a family keepsake and their wife/mother/aunt seems to be missing.
Saoirse stands up the moment she sees Sha arrive and leaves space for the tabaxi to open the chest. She'll stand between the chest and the centaur family to act as a shield in case something goes wrong. And also to be quicker than them to glance inside. Just in case they find something ... unexpected.
The chest opens easily enough, and when you open the lid, the front side slides outwards, reavealing a thin set of stairs that lead down to a room that there is obviously no space for. A smell of stale air rises out of the chest, the kind that comes from people slowly using up the oxygen in a limited space. You can just barely hear a voice down there, speaking in Elvish, a little slow and tired, but you quickly hear the strength return to it as the fresh air from ouside flows into the chest.
""... y aunque Erevan fue capturado, no tuvo miedo, porque los demás lo conocían bien, y ningún embaucador podía engañar a sus compañeros por mucho tiempo. Se reía en sus cadenas, sin miedo, y no dio información a sus captores, aunque eran viles..."
"... and even though Erevan was captured, he had no fear, because the others knew him well, and no trickster could long fool his fellows. He laughed in his chains, unafraid, and gave no information up to his captors, though they were vile..."
Even though Saoirse doesn't know the full story herself, and even though Sha doesn't understand every word, you can feel the courage carried in the words, and a little bit of fear and worry leaves you. Lichen is alright, and you'll get him out of there no problem. Sha and Saoirse recieve bardic inspiration. (One d6 that you can add to an ability check of your choice within the next 10 minutes).
Bearlock waits for the reaction of Saoirse and Sha-Gravis, and begins to worry as the waft of stale air reaches his nostrils. But then he hears the faint sound of a voice speaking elvish, and he breathes a heavy sigh of relief.
He gets up to cheer, for a moment forgetting he wear's a bear's body, the sound coming out seemingly half growl and half howl as he raises long furry arms to the sky. He drops to all fours and pads over to look down into the chest for himself.
Saoirse gasps soundly, glances at Sha with a smiling and relieved look and then turns to look inside the chest again:
- Lichen! Oh gods, you are all right! Come, come with us, you are free to go.
As she moves away to leave space for the young firbolg to get out her eyes crosses the older centaur's and that's when she realizes that the problems are not over yet. She gestures him so they can talk a little away, trying that the younger of the centaurs doesn't listen what she is about to say:
- I had hoped your wife would be there with Lichen. But I'm not sure she is. We will go look for her right away, okay?

Lam gets the message from Cyclence and takes off to the South Branch to go find his friends. When he gets there, he first does a double take at his bear friend. Then he looks to all of them for directions on how he can help.
