Can I try work out what the runes do (maybe with my -2 arcana)?
Yes. Geoffrey isn’t able to recognize anything about this place other than that it seems to be some kind of magical forge.

History or Religion check. You can use wisdom instead of intelligence for this.

Brontes recognizes this place as one of Hephaistos’s old forges, the god of smithing. It can be used to enhance gear, and he could probably figure out how to do it if he wished.
The symbol is also the universal button for activation.

"Holy Hephaestus, it's a forge!" The satyr child squeals. "Whoa..." He and his copper goat run into the room, laughing and checking everything out. He pokes and prods at things, looking to see in what state the forge is in, if there are any tools, unfinished projects, etc.

The forge is very old, but it’s in excellent shape. Most everything in here is magical, the actual forge itself unlit but previously using some form of greek fire, as far as he can tell. The tools are too large and heavy for him to use, but there’s plenty scattered about almost in disarray. The projects he can see are completed, a large anvil enchanted to enhance a weapon, with a perfect indent for a sword in the center as if the anvil itself was a mold.
The monolith in the center seems to be some kind of transport device, judging from the runes of the goddess Iris that are drawn along the sides. In the center of it is a large handprint.

Cassandra looks around the chamber in awe and approaches the monolith, trying to ascertain its origin and purpose.
She isn’t able to garner much other than that it’s a very old, magical forge. There’s a lot of rubble around the area, as if there had been an earthquake.

Glancing down at the runes he nods sagely. "It's a magic forge with magic runes!"
"Mm, runes aren't too hard. My uncle studied with giants, but unfortunetly I went down a different path of knowledge" tagraul say, peering over their shoulder
"You can't scratch many runes into the waves, so I never really bothered," shrugs Geoffrey. "Out on the open ocean I just kinda learned to go with the flow and that's all I ever really mastered!"

"Mhm! Don't call me kid. But, yeah! I used to work with my dad in his forging workshop before I became part of the Blacksmith's guild. I did the machining while he did the manual blacksmithing, but I learned both! Have you tried it before? Blacksmithing, I mean."

*that's gonna come back to bite me later, I can just feel it. Gonna die at the hands of a one eyed, smelly sea serpent*
