Backstory: Lucernae was born in a small, quiet village. When he was growing up, he was obsessed with knowledge and the saying that "Knowledge is Power". He was completely devoted to his studies, and was always at the top of his class. It wasn't enough. When he was little, he would ask endless questions, the answers of which his elders often didn't know. He started questioning the things that people thought they "knew".
When he grew up, he devoted himself to the quest of knowledge. He wished to know all the things in the world, whether or not they were worth knowing. When he was 23, the lord of Neverwinter somehow heard of him. He requested that Lucernae serve him in his private library. Of course, as this would give Lucernae access to even more works, he agreed.
Eventually, Lucernae decided that he would like to go to candlekeep. As an offering to their scholars, he began creating a compendium of all of his knowledge, magical and otherwise. He had to split the compendium into 8 thick volumes in order for them all to fit. With the lord of Neverwinter's permission, he used these wonderful works to make 8 trips to Candlekeep, gaining more and more knowledge each visit.
On the 8th visit, however, he stumbled upon a special tome. In it, Lucernae learned of a treasure hoard in Waterdeep. He researched this treasure hoard, and finally located it. Supposedly, it hid a great historical artifact. He hired a group of adventurers to raid it, and purchased the staff. However, upon presenting it to the lord of Neverwinter, his face turned white and Lucernae was kicked out. Puzzled, he studied the staff.
Upon closer inspection, he discovered that the staff held a Djinni. Upon further investigation, Lucernae discovered that the previous lord of Waterdeep used the staff as a way to trap elemental genies. Curious, he summoned the Djinni. Unfortunately, the Djinni trapped Lucernae and threatened to kill him unless he would give him something of value. Desperate, Lucernae offered his services in exchange for power. He promised that he would provide the Djinni with all the knowledge that his quest would give him. Satisfied with his bargain, the Djinni lent some power to Lucernae and stripped the binding crystal of its power.
Lucernae then became an adventurer, as now he had the power to conduct investigations and uncover secrets in dangerous places. He began to wander around, and found himself in Nightstone. This brings us to the start of Storm King's Thunder.

Backstory: Adelle was born to a middleclass family in the city of Waterdeep and didn't have much excess growing up, but she wasn't poor, at least not the definition most expect. She lived a middleclass lifestyle with middleclass clothes and middleclass friendships. This however, caused her to have a bit of depression growing up. Wondering why she couldn't be like the occasional adventurer that wandered through. When she was in her late teens she stumbled across a man in a park, playing a lute for some coin. The song he was playing wasn't a happy one, but a sad one... One of pain and anguish, and for some reason, this resonated with her. Not just her, but others as well as they were drawn in.
She stayed until the end of his performance and approached him, asking him how he came to learn his instrument and the songs he played. He explained that he was self taught and that the songs he sang, were inspired by real life, not necessarily always his life, but others lives as well. He continued to explain that he was thinking about retiring his lute and that he would love to teach her if she was interested. She accepted and the following years were spent learning various instruments, as well as spending a lot of time people watching to draw inspiration for songs. Years have since gone by since her mentor retired, and she took up his mantle, playing the sad tunes that those who pass by, expect.
It wasn't until she hit her mid 20s when the magic started to connect with her through her music and she realized, that if she practiced enough, she could become one of those adventurers she grew up idolizing. But in order to do this, this required her to get out of Waterdeep and head out, out into the world. She figured, what better way to help hone her skills then to throw yourself head on into situations, and if she could help spread her mentors legacy along the way, it was all just a bonus. So she left Waterdeep and made her way to Nightstone... A place where opportunity is sought for those with the will to seek it.

Eliza Cilguarno once had lofty dreams and eyes which were firmly set on the horizon. She dreamed of open road, distant clouds, grand ruins and new discoveries. As a young woman she achieved her dreams, and it is this singular trait that most identifies Tomasi Stormson as her child, though he finds it hard to believe now. Now a fish merchant on an island across a shallow strait near the southerly portion of the Sword Coast, Tomasi finds it hard to recognize in his mother the educated, bold Eliza that he hears about in the stories that his mother told him growing up.
Rather, it is the tales of daring-do of a father that he has never met that captivate Tomasi. A father whom must explain Tomasi's blue skin, his ability to call to the wind, and his thirst for adventure. Scorned by the village community in which he grew up, with little other than mother to tie him down, Tomasi did not make it long past his adult naming day before seeking out a ship and learning the trade of a sailor, determined to find a place in the large world big enough for him to fit.
He envisaged a life of travel, of mercantile activity, and danger too, of course. Still, it was to be the danger of a seaman's lot; rough weather, rough seas, and rough women. His new career lasted now longer than crossing the strait when the clouds began to stir, and news of a defeated dragon cult, strange sights and weather patterns all over the region were proven true, the ship run aground by a sudden and unnatural thunderstorm.
Where the other sailors, and even the captain, fled to solid ground, Tomasi found himself called to the top of the crow's nest by the raging storm.
Now, the ring that he has always carried -- the only keepsake and proof of his trueborn father's existence -- sparks and rumbles of its own volition, and strange magic leaps to obey him from within its confines.
It's clear now that a sailor's life is not for him, but adventure, and something grander? Absolutely.
Tomasi finds himself at the campaign's start in search of a 'Harper', his mother's final guidance, on how to find someone who can steer him toward where he needs to be if he finds himself called to greater things than life as a deckhand. On the road he has learnt that the nearby Nightstone Inn is comfortable, warm, and has a knowledgeable dwarven innkeeper who may just know where to go to find one.

Perhaps she and Alkyn shared Melanath at a teacher when they were young. She either moved on or had passed his class before he started victimizing Melanath's clients.
Perhaps Doc, Otter, Barn, and Alexander had stopped in her hometown and met her at different times.
Perhaps the farm that Durien works at is near her hometown, and hence have briefly crossed paths before.
Backstory: Ardos spent the first number of years of his life as part of a traveling circus. He never knew his parents and no one in the circus would give him the time of day let alone tell him where he came from. As a child he was responsible for cleaning the animal carts, feeding them, and any other random job that they demanded he do as long as he stayed hidden from the customers. During one show he was spotted by a gnome child and within moments a huge crowd had formed around this strange infernal creature. The owner of the circus realized the profit and began marketing Ardos as a wild Tiefling child from another realm, something that has been ingrained in his psyche ever since. After a show one night he saw one of the animal trainers whipping a caged performance bear and Ardos decided he'd seen enough. Once everyone was asleep he unlocked the cage to release the animal. Instead of running off the bear killed or seriously hurt a majority of the performers before finally being put down by local authorities. The owner of the circus tried to capture Ardos, but he fled into the woods. Before making a clean escape, however, the ringmaster cast a spell that impacted on Ardos's right horn, breaking it off a couple inches above his head. He picked it up and continued running before finally finding a cave where he hid for the night. Thirteen years later and Ardos still prefers the company of animals and the smell of a forest to the city. Living a mostly nomadic life, he travels around doing odd jobs where he can to earn some coin, and where there isn't much work there tends to be something that he can grab to sell in the next city over. Knowing that nobles use this area for hunting Ardos has decided to offer his services as tracker and guard, hoping to earn some easy coin (and see if there might be anything the nobles won't notice going missing for a while).
Perhaps Kiam and she grew up in the same town/village together. They could’ve been childhood friends. His father may have been one of the “adventurers” that I mentioned in her backstory.
That's a good idea! I think it could certainly work that Kian and Madam lived in the same village as friends, and your idea that his father could be one of the adventurers from her backstory is great.
What kind of story are you going to create with us? Focused more on violence? Bloodshed? Emotional tension? Adventure? Mystery? Strong realism? Friendship and good feelings? Heroism? Kindness?
(Just to avoid creating a character completely off topic compared to what you have in mind).
I like to be descriptive, so I don't shy away from bloodshed and violence, but only where it serves the story or the character. It's not the core of the story.
If by 'emotional tension' you mean within the party, I'm not a fan of PvP unless there's a very good reason for it, I feel like combat is the least interesting way for PC disagreements to be settled, and it makes it difficult to keep the party together - why would you stay travelling with someone who attacked you? But tension worked out through RP can be really interesting.
You wouldn't be adventurers if there weren't adventure, so that's definitely there. There is an overriding mystery within the STK story of 'What's going on with the giants?' but beyond that I do like a bit of investigating, seeking out the answers to questions.
I like to play things pretty real, as realistic as they can get in a high fantasy setting like FR. I'm the kind of person who will describe 'a spell of mending' rather than 'the Mending spell' but not always, and I don't put that limitation on my players. And Rule of Cool will usually win with me.
And I certainly hope there'll be friendship, heroism and kindness! Within the party I don't expect those to be immediate, but I hope they'll grow with time.

Backstory:
The surface world always fascinated Katoki, but her training as a priestess kept her away. She had to protect the village from the elemental creatures of the water plane. Katoki came from a long line of priestesses sworn to defend her village. They pushed their bodies to limits, training constantly for many years. It wasn't until the awaking of a Dragon Turtle that changed Katoki's life. The village took an offering to the Dragon Turtle, in hopes of appeasing it. Among them was Katoki, the youngest in line she figured this was the best way to protect the village. She offered to speak with the Dragon Turtle. The Dragon Turtle uninterested in treasure focused his attention on the young Katoki.
They would spend hours talking about the surface world. He took a kinship to the youngling, he too enjoyed the tales of the surface world. Taking her under his wing the Dragon Turtle began training her. He taught her everything he knew of the surface world, but he admits it’s been a long time since he last visited it. Armed with her new knowledge and her completed physical training, the Dragon Turtle sent Katoki to venture to the surface world for her final training.
Before their final good byes, The Dragon Turtle gave Katoki a journal he had found recently while plundering pirates. it came from a human adventurer, It mentioned an Inn, The Nightstone Inn. It was said to serve the best mead in the area. Its beds were made of clouds and it's the best sleep you'd ever experience. The Innkeeper was a dwarf, she has never seen a dwarf before Katoki thinks as she packed her gear. The book also mentions a group called the Emerald Enclave. As she began to leave she thought they'd be a trustworthy crowd to be around, at least until she learns common. Traveling a few days in she finally reach land, just out of the town of waterdeep, with her broken come she was able to get directions to her new journey excited to tell her master eveything she sees!
