Neverwinter, also known as the City of Skilled Hands and the Jewel of the North, was a bustling, cultured, and cosmopolitan city-state in northwest Faerûn.
Neverwinter was regarded by Volo as the most cosmopolitan and civilized city in all of Faerûn. The city was a member in good standing of the Lords' Alliance.

Neverwinter Year of Prosperity 1491 7AM The Shinny Serpant Tavern and Inn
The dwarf, Gundren Rockseeker, has asked you all to meet him in the back room of theShinny Serpant Tavern and INN. The Shining Serpent Inn was located in the Beggar's Nest district.
As you walk in,
Gundren looks up from a conversation with an older, gray haired gentleman in plate mail. "Hail adventurers! Tis about time ye showed up. I'm glad you decided to take me up on my offer." Gundren gestures to the man beside him. "This is Sildar Hallwinter, my lead man for this trip."
Sildar says, "Hail."
Gundren checks out the crew and adds,"I'll pay for a mug of mead or ale for ya. Then it's down to business."
OOC: Introduce and describe your characters.
I'll be adding players eventually as they complete their other campaigns or create their characters.
Karea walks into the room, holding the hilt of her sword but glad to be out of the sunlight, painful for a dark elf, especially one trained to work in darkness. She nods at the dwarf, and sits down, but doesn't order anything.
*Because Karea is 5th level, does she get any additional starting equipment from previous adventures? I believe the DMG has a table for starting equipment at higher levels."

The travel has been hard, the sun scouring, and the sea spray has covered his skin in salt and Faith’s face burns. Some might find it odd then, the great smile on the Aasimar’s face as he disembarks the barge that has conveyed him to Neverwinter City.
He waves goodbye to the sailors, who cheer him off. Faith recognises he is not always the most amusing, but he is cheerful and kind, and his celestial heritage has allowed him to treat many of the old sea-dogs’ aches and injuries, and it is hard to stay cold to one who has taken years of pain from you, and shared their rations with you.
Neverwinter is riotous colour, a wash of sound and smells, strange spices on the air that Faith has never smelled before, and his stomach gives a great rumble in appreciation. Faith sees the shadow of the broken mountain over the city, but as his stomach cramps, he starts to wonder if it might not be hunger that is driving him to the nearest inn.
“I told those sailors a month without fruit was problematic!”
Faith believes fate pulls invisible strings, in ways one cannot possibly think to look for.
He ducks into the nearest inn, and after a significant amount of time steps out from the indoor privy (an indoor privy! With flushing water. What a strange city.) right into a gathering of grizzly adventurers, and a dwarf who seems to think Faith finds himself there by will not chance.
There is a job.
Faith has hands.
Faith rubs his stomach, takes a seat when no one stops him. “No ale for me right now, I think. Milk, maybe.”
As you all meet at the Shinny Serpent Tavern and INN and make your introduction while meeting with Gundren Rockseeker He signals for a goat milk for Faith and he says, "I'm hiring you lot for escort duty. I've got a wagon of goods that need to make it to Phandalin. I've got a driver for the wagon who's family, Torgga. The pay is 10 gp each since it's an easy mission and I've thrown in some healing pots. You'll get paid by the owner of Barthen's Provisions in Phandalin when you deliver the wagon safely to the trading post."
"I'm leaving now. The wagon will be ready in about 3 hours. There's been a change of plans and Sildar Hallwinter will be escorting me and now Torgga is in charge of the wagon. I'll see you in Phadalin. Torgga can answer any questions you might have."
Gurden takes off with his escort Sildar Hallwinter getting a head start.
During the 3 hours wait for the wagon you can ask questions and we can figure that you got your gear purchased and you have any prep spells cast just before you get going.
"Obviously, I missed the critical part of the briefing," he says. "By chance you are heading to Phandalin, as was I, so why not be paid and accompany some who know the way? However, while we wait, for someone new to this land, do you have any recommendations?
"I am dressed for humidity, and I don't know the climate of Phandalin, nor how long the journey will take?"
He introduces himself to the two other hired members of the escort team, sizing them up. They carry themselves like adventurers with experience. Seasoned. Tough. Dangerous, and more so than the average wagon guard.
"What brings you two along, for ten gold pieces? What is in this cart that is quite so valuable as to need your services, or is it luck that brings us together and all aiming in the same direction?"
Torgga replies to Faith, "Well met. Neverwinter stood on the northern Sword Coast, on the High Road between Waterdeep and Luskan, specifically between Leilon and Port Llast. To the east lay the Neverwinter Wood and, at its heart, the volcanic Mount Hotenow. The Neverwinter River was heated by fire elementals living under the volcano before flowing through the forest and the city. It carried its supernatural warmth with it, keeping the river and harbor from freezing up in winter and the gardens green year-round. The heat given off by the river created a permanent warm climate in the immediate area.
Southeast of Neverwinter stood the monastery of Helm's Hold."

Just restating the into -
In the city of Neverwinter, a dwarf named Gundren Rockseeker asked you to bring a wagonload of provisions to the rough-and-tumble settlement of Phandalin, a couple of days’ travel southeast of the city. Gundren was clearly excited and more than a little secretive about his reasons for the trip, saying only that he and his brothers had found “something big,” and that he’d pay you ten gold pieces each for escorting his supplies safely to Barthen’s Provisions, a trading post in Phandalin. He then set out ahead of you on horse, along with a warrior escort named Sildar Hallwinter, claiming he needed to arrive early to “take care of business.”
You’ve spent the last few days following the High Road south from Neverwinter, and you’ve just recently veered east along the Triboar Trail. You’ve encountered no trouble so far, but this territory can be dangerous. Bandits and outlaws have been known to lurk along the trail.
You’ve been on the Triboar Trail for about half a day. As you come around a bend, you spot two dead horses sprawled about fifty feet ahead of you, blocking the path. Each has several black-feathered arrows sticking out of it. The woods press close to the trail here, with a steep embankment and dense thickets on either side.
Solace alerts Faith to something ahead.
Those with Weapons of warning are alerted also. Something is off.

Matheris
Action: Crimson Rite on his Rapier of Warning.
You see Matheris wince in pain and energy flow down his arm as if lightning flowed through it to the rapier which now seems to crackle the energy. Matheris takes 3 damage.
OOC - This is active until a short or long rest then it's reapplied.

Faith lets down the tarpaulin from the back off the cart so that it trails on the ground, and covers Toggra a little bit from sight.
He whistles. Solace knows what it means, enemies near? Her cry had given Faith warning, now he must hope her eyes will show him enemies. For a moment he sends his mind up to her and looks at as she searches.
Solace easily picks out the 6 creatures hiding behind bushes all around the wagon. All goblins with one looking a bet better than the other Solace telepathically sends you. Solace also picks up the dead horses in the middle of the road the oxen were head towards.

Each hex is 10' and the Goblin at the top is 50' away and is where the dead horses are at. With Solace's eyesight you believe those horses are Gunders and his warrior escort's.
Everyone has advantage on Initiative I believe except the goblins :o)

Accidentally rolled init for Karea Doh...It was an 18 so if Karea rolls lower than 18 you can keep the 18 and I'll manually enter it. The one thing I don't like about the roller when it auto rolls the monsters init is that if you refresh the page or go back a page it clears the numbers. Soooo ....I'll wait for Dragon to roll or tomorrow at some point manually enter the 18 and start combat.

(The encounter has an initiative of 22 for Faith if I’m reading it right. I’m not sure why, but I’m not complaining. Possibly, pre campaign rolled initiative a few times — still not sure. If you have advantage on the character sheet and roll there, does it do it automatically or is it just a prompt to click twice?)

He whistles. Solace knows what it means, enemies near? Her cry had given Faith warning, now he must hope her eyes will show him enemies. For a moment he sends his mind up to her and looks at as she searches.
Solace Perception: 14
(Natural 20! First in aaaaages)
Solace easily picks out the 6 creatures hiding behind bushes all around the wagon. All goblins with one looking a bet better than the other Solace telepathically sends you. Solace also picks up the dead horses in the middle of the road the oxen were head towards.
Seeing the dwarf take cover and Solace and the weapons of warning alerting the groups that battle is imminent, the goblins jump out as you decide to act.
Roll Initiative.

Each hex is 10' and the Goblin at the top is 50' away and is where the dead horses are at. With Solace's eyesight you believe those horses are Gunders and his warrior escort's.
Everyone has advantage on Initiative I believe except the goblins :o)

I like the Encounter builder and I will be using it. I'll send the link to the encounter once it's all set up.
