Ravenwood, where this adventure starts, is a small, isolated village situated in a valley surrounded by dense woods. The villagers are mostly farmers and craftsmen who rely on the surrounding forest for resources. However, they are fiercely protective of their way of life and are suspicious of outsiders. Recently, the village has been plagued by a series of gruesome murders that have created an atmosphere of unease and danger. The villagers whisper of strange creatures and curses that lurk within the depths of the forest that surrounds them. It is up to you to investigate the murders and discover the truth behind the dark presence that has invaded Ravenwood.

As the DM, I am passionate about crafting complex NPCs, fantastical locations, and weaving player character backstories into the overarching plot. In this gritty, low fantasy sword and sorcery campaign, I will be focusing heavily on these aspects to create a fully immersive and engaging experience for the players. As we begin at 1st level using standard point buy, only human characters will be allowed. Magic classes are permitted, but be prepared for a dark and gritty tone as we navigate through the intricacies of the campaign. Join me on this adventure as we delve into a world of danger, intrigue, and mystery.
Perri has lived on the outskirts of Ravenwood most her life, and she's been the village leatherworker for the last 20 years ever since her Maureen passed....though truth be told she did most of the work while Maureen was around as well.
She's a passable hunter, mostly to procure leather for her craft but also for her larder as well, she is deeply disturbed by the murders, doubly so because a strange older widow who lives on the outskirts is likely to be suspect number one before long....it wouldn't be the first time the word 'witchcraft' would be muttered in her direction.
Linden is apprentice to the local magistrate (or whatever works for the DM). Up until this point he has served as scribe and sounding board, once or twice as a junior interrogator but nothing on this scale, his day-to-day involved paperwork and mediation of minor disputes. With the magistrate away on business, he is filled in equal measure with excitement and dread at the idea of attending a solo investigation without his lord and master. He is a young man, but holds none of the confidence of his peers, he often doubts himself and his abilities, despite some skill with a bow.
Can he step up to the plate? Or will the murders continue? He only hopes his master makes it home soon, the citizens of Ravenwood are starting to get irritable at the lack of progress thus far.....
Lucky Locksmanbegan his fateful life as a bundle swaddled in cloth left on the door step of Glen Locksman. Having no kids of his own, Glen took in the infant. Glen made locks, keys, and in his spare time clocks and clockwork toys (Lucky eventually became his apprentice).
As he grew, Glen noticed he knew what Lucky wanted even before he began to cry. He was enamored with his son whom he usually spoiled.
At 6 years old, Lucky began asking Glen questions that no one else could hear. Discovering his latent magic, Lucky has improved his abilities mostly through trial and error.
Atlee Elmont recently completed his training to become a priest of Helm, god of protection, and reported to his new posting in Ravenwood. Shortly after arriving and beginning the arduous process of cleaning out the simple, old house of worship on the edge of the village, Atlee saw a sudden increase in visitors to his weekly intercession service. The he heard the tales of a gruesome murder and he figured that he was called to the right place for just such a time as this. But the murders continued, and the villagers grew more insulated and distrustful, especially of anyone not born and raised here...still, he was determined to minister to these people. But he also recognized that his god was the god of protection, and he had some skills and training for that, too.

Name: Bashir Hawkbrand Race: Variant Human (Observant feat) Background: Outlander Class: Ranger (will choose Gloom Stalker at 3rd level) Backstory:
Bashir had been a wanderer for most of his life. It is said that not all who wander are lost, but this mantra is not applicable to Bashir, who was most certainly lost; those who wander but are not lost seldom have a destination, while Bashir did. He did not know it until about a season or two ago, but this destination was the town of Ravenwood. When he first found the town amongst the woods, he became inexplicably enamored with it, perhaps because it was the first sign of civilization he had seen in many years. After spending a few days observing the residents of the town from the woods, he decided one night to go in and make introductions. He was interrupted, however, by a vicious beast stalking the settlement. Fearing that it could harm somebody, he killed it, though not without difficulty. After resting for a few days, he again tried to make his way into the town, and found himself in a similar situation with a similar beast.
From these experiences, Bashir realized how threatened this small village was, and so he swore to protect it against the threats of the night until he could no longer. He taught himself to use his keen eyes to read lips so that he could be aware of the goings on in Ravenwood from a distance. With this skill, he learned that the denizens rarely trust outsiders, and so he decided to remain hidden for fear of being driven away. He entered the settlement a few times under the comfortable veil of night, introducing himself only to a couple shopkeepers and others that he gathered would be less affronted and could keep secrets well. When he got wind of the murders within Ravenwood, his only directive became learning their cause and stopping it.
Are there any variant rules we should expect to use, such as Gritty Realism or Variant Encumbrance?
I guess I should have asked earlier, but is Variant Human allowed?
Are optional class features from Tasha's allowed?

Treenity had never cared too much about the village in Ravenwood… What was she supposed to care about that pimple-like thing in the forest? About an area where trees had been cut down to make way for… for what? Homes? An isolated village? With a few farmers and craftsmen?
Treenity didn't care about any of this. All she cared about was the trees. Trees! Those majestic, wise and serene creatures whose voices she could hear.
But now everything is about to change, because Treenity feels that trees are afraid. There is something new in the forest; something wrong... something that suggests that a dark presence has invaded Ravenwood... The dark presence, for now, seems content on eliminating those pathetic villagers that Treenity doesn't care about - but the trees are afraid... How long will it be before evil turns against them too? Treenity can't afford to remain helpless to find out - maybe for once it's better to join forces with those pathetic beings and eliminate the threat together.
(You probably already figured out already that Treenity is a druid - will provide sheet if selected)
Avery Talstance is a man with a dream. A dream of saving enough gold to buy his own shop some day and sell his wares to smiling customers. A dream of making enough money to support his parents and siblings. A dream of making a mark on the world. For now, he's just a traveling merchant. He found he has a good talent for selling tool and supplies to folks and has a great personality for this. He's great at reading folks and finding out what they need. Sometimes he thinks he goddess is the one guiding him. A goddess of fortune and trade. Always a devout believer in the gods he found himself blessed with a bit of magic. Following the goddess he honors every deal he makes as part of his faith. Not one to swindle but one to definitely push a deal.
He often finds he makes a lot of profit bringing tools and supplies hard to find in the country side towns and villages that don't have easy access to blacksmiths. He was making his way to a town called Ravenwood to help the folks and make a profit. When he got there though he quickly found out they were plagued by mysterious murders and the town was too tense to trust a stranger like him. He wasn't one to give up easily though. Perhaps he could help solve the mystery and in turn the townsfolk would be willing to trade and perhaps even tip him well for his services.
Dexan grew up in the plains south of Eltugard, where his family had a large piece of land. It featured lots of fields for crops and some praeries to raise cattle, and he spent his youth working on the ranch as well as tinkering with old recycled junk on the homestead to make new tools. It was an enjoyable life, but when he was only 15 his parents passed away, leaving him the farm. A few years passed, and things fell into place on the ranch. It was then that he met a lovely young lady named Julianna, who later became his bride. They had a great life, but it didn't last long. A small group of bandits moved into the area and bullied them and the residents of the nearby town for half their crop . None of the people were fighters and they were far too poor to hire anyone to protect them. What little law was in the area turned a blind eye at the slightest flash of coin. After the third year of scraping by, their crop got infested with a plague that wiped out the majority of their harvest. When the bandits came for the harvest, they had nothing to give without risking their own supplies for the winter. A few of the townsfolk decided to mount a resistance against the bandits, Dexan included. When the time came, however, Dexan lost his nerve and hid away. The villagers that fought back stood no chance, they were massacred. In response, the bandits stole all of their cattle and burned what little grain they had.
Julianna fell ill pretty quickly in the season, and the village physician could do nothing without money to trade for medicine. She passed away just before spring. After Julianna's death, Dexan was lost. His wife and livelihood were all taken from him. With nothing left, he spend months barely eating, just tinkering with his machines. One day, he snapped. He put together a crude black powder weapon, saddled his plough horse, and went straight to the bandit's lair. He had no expectation to walk out alive, but he would take as many with him as possible before he died. In a stroke of fate, the majority of the bandits were out on a raid, the few left behind were either drunk or asleep. It took him little time to find the boss. He wanted nothing more than to make him suffer but, in the end, he couldn't bring himself to do it. He put a bullet in the man's head, lit the building on fire, and walked away.
His actions that day ended up helping a lot of people. All of the townsfolk offered to help him get back on his feet as a thanks, but the memories of home were too painful to stay. He set out as a nomad, taking odd jobs for money. After years of meaningless wanderings he crossed paths with another who called the road home, a woman by the name of Ferrin. She was a tinkerer too, and after some insistence on her part he travelled with her and became her student. She imparted what wisdom she had with machines and her philanthropic philosophies to Dexan. When their paths finally forked Dexan set off on his own, walking a path that would carry him far from his past. A path that lead to a little town called Ravenwood...
Kit Harrowhark is, as the locals say, "a bit of an odd duck."
"It's the fever," whisper the older ones, "the one that took her parents."
They hadn't come to Ravenwood very long before the fever struck and no one was quite sure where her people were from. With nowhere to send her and no one willing to take her in ("misfortune follows a family, best not to bring it into your home") Kit became something of a local charity case, welcome everywhere but belonging nowhere. Curious and precocious, she found ways to make herself useful in the margins of Ravenwood society and the locals turned a blind eye to her eccentricities, even when she cut her hair and began dressing as a man.
But the murders have changed that.
Lately, the whispers have started to take on a more sinister air. It's not a far jump from unfortunate to cursed...especially when you don't fit in.
Eddard Locke, town recluse. Eddard is kind of the town recluse, a bookish lad who grew into a lone academic, but maintained a few relationships and helps advise the town leaders. In private he has sought power in forbidden magics. Human Old One Warlock.
Donn Alderfell has lived in Ravenwood for 10 years. He lives in a hovel on the outskirts of town and keeps to himself, finding work doing odd jobs and helping cut the lumber that the town thrives on. He arrived in the middle of a storm a decade ago and he still hasn't told his history to anyone in the town. But there are rumors. People have observed him cutting himself and muttering under his breath when he thought no-one was paying attention. His arms are covered in the scars. He speaks with a strange accent and doesn't ever appear in the local shrine, spending most of his time at work or in the tavern drinking. When people began to disappear, began to be murdered, dark glances began to follow Donn. At the tavern, conversation ceases when he arrives and resumes in a whisper. He'd had few friends, now he had none. He has to find the true cause of the deaths, before the blame falls to him. It wouldn't be the first time.

Happy to work out what brought him to Ravenwood with the DM. Vaguely, I think he is exiled from his people because he was blamed there for something horrible happening to his family. I'm also trying to come up with a reason for him to know Abyssal and Infernal. These things are related, I think. The cutting and muttering are to do with how and why he worships his ancestors. Anyhoo, that's the start.
