Lokilia the Bear slashes at the retreating form carving a huge gash out of a trunk-like thigh then charges after it forcing her muscular body through the gap leaving a lot of fur behind, Magnus centered his blast into the and Lokilia used its surprise at the burst of pain to charge in under its pseudopods and eviscerate it , her claws opening up its abdomen and her bloody jaws seizing hold and pulling most of its insides outside of it. The abomination buckled and crashed to the ground releasing Normont and Quinn....
Normont lay on the ground bleeding heavily but suddenly aware and alive as he turned he stared directly into that huge blue eye and heard the thing whisper, " Thank you......", before it shuddered and lay still.
Lokilia - still in bear form - looks about the cavern to ensure there are no other threats. She then just suddenly changes back to her usual form. Still energized from the savage strength of her bear form, she has a look like she may lash out at any moment. "That took care of that aberration!" she says with vigor. "We showed him what happens when his foul black slime corrupts the natural world!"
It takes her a moment, and a little calming down, before she realizes how seriously Normont was injured. "Oh, are you alright? I can help you out a bit, just a moment." She reaches for the wooden eagle that hangs about her neck, grasping it in one hand. She moves the other as she chants in Druidic, finally opening her hand with 10 berries appearing in it. She steps over to the gnome, offering the berries. "Take what you need, they can provide healing." (Each berry heals 1 hp when eaten.)
Normont lies there for a moment processing what had happened as the pain wracks his small body. He sees again in his minds eye the maw of the horrible creature as the tentacle moved him towards it like some kind of rag doll. And he can still smell the vile odour of its breath. And then the horrific pain as it's teeth bit into him...
Things had gone dark after that, for a moment at least.
He had come back to consciousness in time to see Lokilia's bear form tear the monstrosity apart, and hear its whispered thanks.
When Lokilia changes back he sits up and accepts the goodberries, looking at them and popping one in his mouth, instantly feeling a little better as he swallows it.
"Thank you", he manages to say after a moment. "If not for your bear form I think I was a goner". He says, and then looks around, realising she was probably not the one to heal him. "Thank you too, Magnus", seeing Magnus was also present and assuming it was him.
He looks back to the monstrosity, "I think that used to be a Grey Hunter from Whitestone. That means they were likely investigating the black goop as well, but got trapped and corrupted". He pops another goodberry in his mouth and carries on talking whilst chewing. "That means this isn't over. It also means his weapon should be around here somewhere. I have to find it and return it to Whitestone with news of what happened. Once we are done with our quest of course".
With that said he takes a steadying breath, stands and moves across to the body of the aberration. He puts away the rest of the goodberries for now and begins to search it, his face wrinkled in disgust as he does so.
Normont does his best not to vomit as he searches the corrupted form....he finds a belt dug deeply and painfully into the swollen flesh...whatever trousers it had once held up were long gone but a pouch slick with fluids still hung on it.
Within he found-
- 12 rifle rounds.
- a Potion of Greater Healing
- an amber cameo of a young man with the initials M. K. on the reverse.
"The bullets confirm it, only someone from Whitestone would have these. Please help me find the rifle and finish what this poor soul started", he requests. He does his best to clean off the amber cameo, rifle rounds and potion before stowing them away. He then wipes down and examines the parcel of fruit jerky to see if any of the fluids had got inside to the actual food. If so, he will decide it is not worth keeping.
"Perhaps a little rest, and then we can explore more of the tunnel and find the gate?', he suggests
"A short rest sounds fine, especially after that battle we just had. If there are more of these creatures beyond, we need to be at our best to defeat them. And ahhh, as tasty as the jerky look, they have been inside the creature, I would not risk eating them." Magus states.
"Let continue on and hopefully find this portal and we can easily get it closed, though it might be beyond our magical ability to close." at which point Magnus once more puts his back to the wall near the entrance slides down and sits against the cave wall, letting his body rest from the exertion of battle.
Dev’s song ends, the music stops, and his body, which had been stepping in rhythm, comes to rest. As if awakening from a trance, the teen tiefling looks around the now empty overhang area, the surrounding mutant chamois and the black pool. His expression retreats from the devilish grin that sometimes accompanies his music to his more usual mien of stoic innocence.
“Normont! Quinn!,” he whispers anxiously, and rushes into the crevice after the others, his horns catching again in the narrow space.
“Darn it!”
With great relief he finds the aberration slaughtered by bear claws, while Quinn is all right, and Noemont up to his standard investigations.
Adding two and two, he turns from the claw marks to Lokilia.

Lokilia gives Dev a smile. "Yes." The response sounds very matter-of-fact, perhaps even proud of the carnage. She makes a brief motion of her hand, causing a light breeze to ruffle through his hair momentarily.
She takes a moment to survey what had been the small opening that the aberration had come from. "If that was a person, as Normont says, how did they get up there? You think that's where this portal is at?"
As the companions rested the black liquid continued to trickle down from above finding new paths through the rubble to pool and run through the crack to outside....the fallen stone looked like it would give a fairly easy way to access the level above when they were ready.
Normont sits down leaning against the wall recovering, and offers the remaining eight goodberries to whoever needs them.
"I'm not sure how they got up there, but it was definitely a person at one point. One of my people too", he says sadly. "I think we'll find the portal if we follow the trail of black goo back to the source. Or we might find something else worse than the tentacle monstrosity".
"If you can give me an extra 10 minutes, I can adjust my tools to be able to detect magic. That might help us find the portal", he suggests after he has rested.
Hit Dice: 6+1=7 (+3 for Song of Rest further down the thread)
"As much as I am reluctant to say this, but yes we should continue to explore this cave. If the portal is not closed who knows how many others will be affected by this goo. If left unchecked it could destabilize the area and then we might have to deal with two frightening outcomes, one dealing with undead and one dealing with these type of creatures or worse. Once we are rested we should continue on." Magnus says.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
As the companions rest, Dev sits in a corner and loses himself playing melodies on his pan flute. He supports the melodies with illusions that add subtle harmonies that sound like inhalations and exhalations, like ocean waves. The sound is calming and reinvigorating. (OOC: Song of Rest: anyone who spends at least 1 hit die to regain HP during this short rest regains an additional 4 HP. Namaste!)

Normonts adjustments to his instruments allow him to detect an emanation from the black liquid, that should make it easy to trace back to its source once the others have finished resting.
"It's working", Normont says. "The black goo emanates magic that I can track", he adds as he examines it, obviously without touching any.
"Everybody ready to get moving?".
If the others are ready, he will start to follow the trail of the magical emanations, Amber perched on his shoulder as he goes. If someone else volunteers to lead, he will go second pointing out the way.
Dev had becalmed himself into an afternoon nap. When Magnus complimented his playing, the teenager seemed to nod, but actually was adjusting his sleeping position, soon to be followed by quiet snoring. When Normont speaks, Dev's head whips up, his hair flattened and mussed on one side, a thin trail of spit leading from his mouth to the cave floor, which he frantically wipes away hoping no one will see it, although everyone already has. Blinking, the tiefling rises and follows Normont, stifling a yawn.
